Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife Wild Life In Danger black back re-issue 1973 Wild Life In Danger black back re-issue 1973 50 - This is a re-issue of the 1963 blue back set that was issued with Brooke Bond tea and coffee and is a very fine series indeed. When this was reviewed in our magazine it was described as “A provocative title and a provocative set which should do immense good in the battle for the preservation of wild life” and it is sad to think that many of these species continue to feature on the endangered list. For some, like the Sumatran Rhino, Aye-aye, Kakapo and Ivory-billed Woodpecker the situation has unfortunately got worse and all of these are now on the critical list in danger of completely dying out in the wild. The situation is not without hope however as some, such as the Arabian Oryx and Hawaiian Goose have been pulled back from the brink and both are now listed as vulnerable rather than endangered. The numbers of Blue Whale have also improved. As for the Californian Condo this went completely extinct in the wild in 1987 which is no surprise as the card tells us there were only 60-65 left in 1963. Happily this magnificent bird was reintroduced in some US states and whilst still endangered the population is now increasing. Let us hope for a brighter future for all these wonderful species. There is comprehensive and interesting text in black on the reverse and an album was originally available to house these cards. With excellent colour pictures of creatures, which frankly you are unlikely to see in the wild this is a set not to be missed. Cards size 68 x 36mm

Brooke Bond Advert Cards Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues Farewell to Picture Cards 1999 Farewell to Picture Cards 1999 LT3 - When Brooke Bond stopped issuing cards they said goodbye to collectors with a final series of three “Farewell to Picture Cards” on which Kevin Tipps is shown, suitcases in hand, against three different backgrounds. The text on the back is the same on each in essence thanking people for returning the survey cards and marking the end of a “long tradition of picture cards” with the promise of “some exciting new ideas” These represent the end of an era, but we still have plenty of Brooke Bond sets to remind us of the pleasure they have given over their 45 years of issues. Size 89 x 63mm.

Brooke Bond Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues British Costume blue back 1967 British Costume blue back 1967 50 - These illustrate male and female dress from 1050 to the swinging Sixties and include formal court wear, day wear and even a Scottish kilt and Welsh country dress. This is a fine historical set with plenty of information on the reverse. For instance we learn that dresses for ladies in the 1920s flattered the flat chested and men had a new soft felt hat. These colourful cards also demonstrate perfectly the excessive lengths to which being fashionable can take you – this is especially apparent in the 1880s when in addition to the incredibly tight corset an extreme bustle was attached on the back which we are told had to support the weight of the heavily-trimmed overdress. Such a dress must have severely restricted movement and it is no wonder that the Rational Dress Society was founded in that same period to promote more comfortable clothing. This blue text back set was issued in 1967 and an album was originally available to house these cards, but the set was also re-issued by Brooke Bond in 1973 with black text with a re-issue album. These provide a real guide to clothing over the centuries and the cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Brooke Bond Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues Flags and Emblems of the World blue back 1967 Flags and Emblems of the World blue back 1967 50 - These colourful cards illustrate the flags and symbols of many nations and include the flag of the United Nations. The text on the back tells us about the country and their emblem, so for instance, we learn that the chrysanthemum of sixteen petals was the symbol of the Imperial House of Japan, but has come to be regarded as a national emblem as well. The text on these cards is in blue, but these were also re-issued with black text in 1973 and albums were available for both printings. The really interesting thing, of course, is seeing how many countries within the set have changed their name or flag since this was produced. This is an educational and colourful set with cards size 68 x 36mm.
