Brooke Bond Advert Cards Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues Thank You 1999 Thank You 1999 LT1 - Early in 1999 Brooke Bond began issuing survey cards with their PG Tips tea questioning the issue of cards. They followed this up with this “Thank You” card which says “we are looking at the responses and will let you know the results soon” However it would appear that the decision to stop issuing cards had in reality already been taken and the following month they issued their “Farewell To Cards” set. One side of this card just has a big “Thank You!” whilst the other side has a picture of Kevin Tips and text. The cards are size 89 x 64mm.

Brooke Bond Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues Language of Tea (Flags) 1988 Language of Tea (Flags) 1988 12 - This is one of those sets where you would have trouble guessing the content from the title. In fact the fronts all depict flags in a horizontal format with the caption “Would you like a cup of tea?” in the language of the country concerned. All the countries featured have a tea connection so for instance we see the Indian flag and the informative text on the back tells us that India is the mother of tea and that Major Bruce discovered it growing wild in Assam in 1823 and at once began intense cultivation leading to India becoming the largest tea growing area. Also featured are the flags of Sri Lanka which we are told used to produce coffee before switching to tea, China from where the word ‘t’e’ or tea originates, Kenya which smuggled tea seeds into the country and is now a major producer, Britain who drink the most per person, Japan which is famous for its tea ceremonies, Tibet where it is found in brick form, France from where we apparently got the notion of adding milk and the USA famous for the Boston Tea Party when tea was tipped overboard as a protest against tax. There are a couple of unusual inclusions you may not associate with the brew, but the backs explain why they are included. For instance the opening of the Suez Canal in Egypt brought about the end of the tea clippers, Dutch ships smuggled tea into this country and Russia is not only an importer of tea, but was also a producer. The comprehensive text on the back is in green and explains that the flags are self-adhesive stickers which can be removed from the thick card and stuck onto a wallchart map available from the company for 40p. Fascinating stuff – makes you want to put the kettle on! Size 68 x 36mm.

Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife African Wild Life black back re-issue 1973 African Wild Life black back re-issue 1973 50 - These cards are the work of internationally renowned wildlife painter C.F. Tunnicliffe who both illustrated the stunning pictures of animals from the African continent and wrote the descriptions on the reverse. He certainly knew his stuff as there are loads of interesting facts to learn like the fact that Nile Crocodiles cover their eggs with sand leaving them to be incubated by the sun, but dig them up when they are ready to hatch or did you know that Wart Hogs live in holes which they enter backwards so their formidable tusks face outwards. The animals pictured include a Lion, Gorilla, a delightful array of big cats including some like the Caracal and Genet which we had not heard of, s Banded Mongoose, Porcupine etc., but favourite drawings include the Jumping Hare in mid-flight with shadow underneath, Zebras and Sable Antelope at the watering hole, the tiny Klipspringer antelope leaping between rocks and a majestic male Elephant. This set was originally issued with a blue back in 1961, but was re-issued by Brooke Bond in 1973 with a black back. An album was also available to house this set. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Brooke Bond Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues British Costume black back re-issue 1973 British Costume black back re-issue 1973 50 - These illustrate male and female dress from 1050 to the swinging Sixties and include formal court wear, day wear and even a Scottish kilt and Welsh country dress. This is a fine historical set with plenty of information on the reverse. For instance we learn that dresses for ladies in the 1920s flattered the flat chested and men had a new soft felt hat. These colourful cards also demonstrate perfectly the excessive lengths to which being fashionable can take you – this is especially apparent in the 1880s when in addition to the incredibly tight corset an extreme bustle was attached on the back which we are told had to support the weight of the heavily-trimmed overdress. Such a dress must have severely restricted movement and it is no wonder that the Rational Dress Society was founded in that same period to promote more comfortable clothing. This black text back set is a re-issue of the original 1967 set and a re-issue album was originally available to house these cards. These provide a real guide to clothing over the centuries and the cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Brooke Bond Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues Trees in Britain black back re-issue 1973 Trees in Britain black back re-issue 1973 50 - What we love about Brooke Bond sets, particularly those issued in the 1960s, is the amount of thought and research put into them – they were designed to be both attractive and educational and they don’t disappoint. This set looks at British trees, but as well as picturing the full-grown tree in all its glory you also get another card showing the leaves, seeds, fruit or nuts of that tree and the backs give loads of fascinating information about the species. For instance we learn that the Larch was introduced to Britain from Europe and the houses of Venice in Italy are supported on piles of Larch. Also included are the Scots Pine, the Stone Pine which is rare in Britain, the Juniper which produces berries often used to flavour gin, the long living Yew, Common Lime, the Sycamore with its winged seedpods, Horse Chestnut, the native Holly, the rare Spindle Tree, Gean or Wild Cherry which produces glorious white blossoms, Hawthorn who’s haws are popular with birds in winter, Rowan, Crab Apple, London Plane, the Elm which was once common, but was depleted due to disease, Silver Birch, Hornbeam, the familiar Hazel, Beech, Sweet Chestnut which produces chestnuts that can be roasted and eaten, Holm, Common Oak our most well-known tree, the Strawberry Tree and Ash one of the most common trees. An album was original available to house these cards which could be obtained from grocers at 6d. These black back cards are size 68 x 36mm and the original set was issued in 1973 with a blue back.
