Ogdens Military - General Series Air Raid Precautions 1938 Air Raid Precautions 1938 50 - The onset of WWII meant the authorities were keen to give simple life-saving measures the maximum possible exposure and Imperial Tobacco were encouraged to issue this set with a number of their different brands, so the same set was issued by Ogdens, Churchman and Hignett. The Ogdens set was also reprinted in 1999. When these were issued the then Home Secretary, Samuel Hoare, said “I commend a study of these cards to your attention.” The cards show how to select a refuge room and make it gas-proof, protecting windows, how to make a garden dug-out etc as well as defences such as anti-aircraft guns and the balloon barrage around London. The emphasis is very much on keeping yourself safe and there are a number of cards showing women dealing with an incendiary bomb in the house with a scoop and hoe or fighting fires with buckets, hand pumps or portable fire-pumps. The colour pictures and informative text really highlight the frightening dangers the country was now facing, but a spirit of resilience also shines through, epitomised by the couple in rubber clothing and gas-masks. Naturally they should be cowering their shelter but the card informs us that “prudent persons, if forced to go outdoors during raids should provide themselves” in addition to gas masks, with “rubber or oilskin coats and hats and rubber boots”. A fantastic glimpse at war on the home front with cards size 68 x 36mm. This set was also issued by Wills and Churchman.

Churchman Military - General Series R A F at Work 1938 R A F at Work 1938 M48 - This shows personnel and planes going about their business just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The well-rounded look at life in the R.A.F includes men relaxing in the Airmen’s Club at Abu Sueir in Egypt, lowering a float-plane onto the sea, parachute jumping, cooks at work, fabric workers covering a wing, refueling a plane in the desert, engine maintenance, fitting torpedoes, inspecting a Vickers ‘Wellesley’ Bomber etc. It shows too the range of vehicles used by the R.A.F on land such as fire engines, armoured cars and motor boats. The numbered backs give plenty of information on the roles and duties of staff. For instance a Wireless Operator must also know about electricity and be capable of manufacturing the less complicated parts of wireless equipment.. Size 68 x 53mm

Lambert & Butler Military - General Series Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Air Force 1939 Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Air Force 1939 50 - This set would win the prize for having one of the longest and most cumbersome titles, but don’t let that put you off as this is one of the best series every issued. The excellent colour pictures present the subjects with great clarity in a variety and style which immediately captures your interest, whilst the highly informative backs give a wonderful insight into the history and workings of the armed forces. As our then New Issues Editor wrote in our magazine in February 1939 the series “breaks entirely new ground. It is well-produced and intrinsically of great interest”. The first 18 cards look at the Navy, then cards 19 to 43 examine the Army and the remaining cards look at the R.A.F. The reason for so few cards on the R.A.F was explained in the magazine with the words “as is natural with a new Service where ceremonial arising from tradition is necessarily limited.” To give you a flavour of the set this contains pictures of aircraft diving in salute over the Royal Yacht, the presenting of leeks to the Welsh Guards on St. David’s Day and issuing the daily grog ration aboard ship. We cannot recommend this set highly enough. Cards size 68 x 36mm.

Carreras Military & Armed Forces Our Navy (Thin Card) 1937 Our Navy (Thin Card) 1937 50 - These cards picture almost every type of ship in service in 1937 and when reviewed in our magazine at the time the reviewer described them as “the first series exclusively devoted to the Navy in a very long time and most welcome”. These were packed with the firm’s “Gib” brand cigarettes and contain excellent colour pictures with plenty of text about the vessel on the numbered backs. Amongst the craft covered are the submarines H.M.S. Narwhal, Porpoise and Pandora, Naval flying boats, the turrets of H.M.S Hood, H.M.S. Victory the most famous ship in the world, a Mining Tender, H.M.S Royal Sovereign, aircraft carriers H.M.S Courageous and Glorious, H.M.S Rodney, H.M.S. Iron Duke a survivor of WWI, survey ship H.M.S. Flinders, repair ship H.M.S Resource, destroyer H.M.S Comet and hospital ship H.M.S. Maine. Some of the more well-known vessels appear on more than one card in the set with different pictures and adjusted text. Sadly with war already on the horizon when this was issued it would not be long before the Navy would be put to the test and many of these fine vessels would be destroyed. Selected numbers from this set were also produced as a set of 20 on thicker card. An excellent set with cards size 68 x 36mm
