Cardlynx Miscellaneous Trade Cards Bookmark High Grade Series 2008 Bookmark High Grade Series 2008 EL6 - This is a novel idea, which, as far as I know, has only entered the hobby once before with Player’s 1905 series of bookmarks. Each of the new cards illustrates a subject from one of Cardlynx’s recent issues, namely Butterflies, Eagles, Golfers, Horses, Poultry Breeds and Victorian Poultry, all six titles being listed on the card, but with the subject concerned highlighted in red print. The backs are printed as postcards. Size 170 x 80mm.

Rockwell Miscellaneous Trade Cards Childrens Book Illustrators of the Golden Age 2005 Childrens Book Illustrators of the Golden Age 2005 10 - Top marks for a subject not covered on cards before, and a very interesting series it makes, showing in colour typical work by ten of the 20th century’s greatest illustrators, including Arthur Rackham (Wind in the Willows), Charles Folkard (Alice), Mabel Lucie Attwell (Cute Kiddies) and a couple who will be familiar to card collectors – George Studdy (Bonzo Dog) and Lawson Wood (Gran-Pop). Well-composed biographies on the backs. Size 68 x 36mm

Rockwell Miscellaneous Trade Cards Heath Robinson At The Seaside 2010 Heath Robinson At The Seaside 2010 10 - 72 years after his death, artist William Heath Robinson is still renowned for his humorous drawings showing complicated and flimsy machinery designed to perform the simplest of tasks using the maximum number of operatives, examples of which in a seaside context are demonstrated in this card series with such improbable contraptions a “safety deckchair for giving warning of the approaching tide” and a machine for spraying oil on waves for the benefit of bathers in rough weather! Size 67 x 36

Rockwell Miscellaneous Trade Cards Solar System 2001 Solar System 2001 10 - Starting with the Sun and working outwards through the planets from Mercury to Pluto, a total of ten, which is just the right number of subjects for a Rockwell set. The fine colour pictures are backed by well informed texts such as warning us that Earth’s nearest neighbour Venus has a carbon dioxide atmosphere giving an extreme “greenhouse effect” boosting the temperature to 460°c. Size 67 x 36mm this set is also available in a larger size.

Rockwell Miscellaneous Trade Cards Suffragettes 2005 Suffragettes 2005 10 - In May, 1905, Keir Hardie’s bill to give women the vote ran out of parliamentary time because of delaying tactics by anti-suffragists, and so began a period of increasing unrest and direct action, led principally by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters, including the famous incident when Emily Davison was killed after throwing herself under the King’s horse in the 1913 Epsom Derby. Emancipation came eventually in 1918. The full story is revealed in pictures and words in this excellent series, size 67 x 36mm

Home Counties Dairies Miscellaneous Trade Cards The Story of Milk 1965 The Story of Milk 1965 25 - These excellent colour cards look at all aspects of milk production in 1966 at a time when most people had milk delivered to their door in glass bottles and children had free milk at school. These were the days before people worried about fat content so it is no surprise the first card pictures a Jersey cow and the set goes on to take us through every step in production with informative write-up on the reverse. In those days most milk was still put into churns which were collected by lorry, but times were changing and some farms had installed bulk tanks enabling the milk to be immediately cooled and collected by a tanker which took it straight to the bottling plant. Churns by contrast went to a local depot which emptied them into tanks and the churns where then sterilised and returned to the farms by the lorries when they next went to make a collection. Milk was then transferred by road or rail to processing plants where it was pasteurised, put in bottles and sealed with an aluminium foil cap. They then made their way to the depots where they were collected by the milkman in his van (usually electric) and delivered to the doorstep. The last card is an appeal to everyone to rinse and return bottles so they can be re-used. This set was also issued by Bishops Stortford Dairy Farmers Ltd in 1966, Clover Dairies in 1964 and United Dairies in 1966. These days with all the worry about plastic perhaps more people will return to doorstep deliveries. Cards size 68 x 36mm.
