Lamberts Tea - 25 in set

£3.00

Ringtons Tea Miscellaneous Trade Cards People and Places 1964 People and Places 1964 25 - This colourful little set depicts scenes from around the world so for instance we see a map of Japan with girls in traditional dress or the Islands of Samoa with native dancers. Among the other people and places featured are Masai Warriors of East Africa, South Americans of the Andes Mountains, cowboys in the South of France, Beduins of the Middle East and Eskimos of the Arctic regions. There are some curious inclusions though like the card for India which is a vast country is full of colourful regional differences but is represented only by a Mahout and his elephant. Also considering there is a whole world to choose from why include a man and his coracle from Ireland or a bullock sleigh in Madeira and the card for Salvador does not even feature people just an erupting volcano. That said there is plenty to enjoy about these cards which are backed by interesting facts about the regions featured. This set was also issued by Askeys, Barratt & Co, Browne Bros., Clover Dairies, Gowers & Burgons, Hitchman’s Dairies, Lamberts Tea, Ringtons Ltd and Wilcocks & Wilcocks and these are the same except for the company name on the reverse. The cards are size 65 x 35mm.

Reddings Tea Miscellaneous Trade Cards Strange Customs of the World 1969 Strange Customs of the World 1969 25 - This is an unusual set issued in 1969 in packets of tea by north London firm Reddings and some pretty weird activities are featured as well as religious ceremonies and costumes. We see, for instance, ceremonial road sweeping in London, the barbaric trial by ordeal in Kenya where people accused of crime must touch red-hot metal, the Walpurgis Masquerade in Germany where people dress up as witches and battle the townsfolk, scorpion eating, Burmese women with stretch necks and the Ripon Horn blower plus Samoan tattooing, Siamese dancing, a Bayaka Initiation Ceremony etc. One odd inclusion is that of a Lapp cradle and the card tells us that babies are “wrapped up warm in the cold climate and sleep in cradles of wood and reindeer-hide”. Frankly it does not seem strange reindeer herders would use local items to make their cradle and keep their baby warm. A fascinating set with plenty of information on the reverse. Cards size 68 x 37mm.

Ching Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Do You Know 1962 Do You Know 1962 25 - This interesting and colourful set covers the sort of questions that these days we can easily find the answer to online, but in the 1960s, when this was issued, would require a trip to the library such as how a Brazil nut grows, how a grasshopper sings, how a nettle stings, how fast an ostrich can travel or why a billiard cue is bevelled. Comprehensive explanations are given on the card backs. Our favourite has to be ‘Why a horse-shoe is used for luck’ as this has a local connection. Apparently these are considered lucky because legend says that St Dunstan, who was born just down the road, was noted for his skill in shoeing horses and he shoed the devil’s hoof, but this caused the devil so much pain he vowed never to enter a place where a horse-shoe was displayed – so now you know! This set was also produced by B.T. Ltd, Cromwell Stores, Ovaltine, S. Prior and Sweetule Products and was also part of a set of 50 produced by Liam Devlin & Sons – see website for availability. This set is size 68 x 36mm.
