Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Alice in Wonderland Rounded Corners Issue 1930 Alice in Wonderland Rounded Corners Issue 1930 48 - In the late 19th century, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University, wrote poems and books for children. We know him better under his pen-name Lewis Carroll, author of “Alice in Wonderland”. Some half a century later, in 1930, Carreras issued a series of 48 Alice in Wonderland cards. The cards explore the bizarre fantasy world in which Alice encounters characters such as The Cheshire Cat and The Grin, the Queen (off with their heads), the White Rabbit (too late), The Mad Hatter and The Mock Turtle, all beautifully illustrated in colour on a white background, on a thick card with round corners and an ornamental back. Double-numbered 1 to 48 and in 16 groups of three they are designed for playing a game.

Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Crystal Palace Souvenir Varnished Front 1937 Crystal Palace Souvenir Varnished Front 1937 40 - These cards were issued following the disastrous fire in November 1936 which destroyed this famous London landmark and the informative text on the reverse tells us that although the fire was attended by sixty-five fire engines and six hundred firemen they could not save the building. The last couple of cards picture the charred remains, but the set begins with a picture of the extraordinary building designed by Sir Joseph Paxton which was erected in Hyde Park. The wonderful glass structure, nicknamed the ‘Crystal Palace’, was home to the Great Exhibition of 1851 which showcased exhibits from around the world as well as British manufacturing talent and a host of entertainment. Following the success of this Exhibition when it was over the decision was taken to move the building from Hyde Park to land at Sydenham and it was re-erected there in 1852 where it became a place of entertainment where people visited to view displays, listen to concerts, watch fire-works or football etc. This set pictures in black and white interesting rooms, some of the entertainments, foreign visitors and some of the ups and downs of its long history. There is plenty of information on the card backs making this a worthy souvenir. These cards have a varnished front, but a matt front version was also issued in 1936. Size 66 x 37mm

Mitchell Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards A Gallery of 1935 A Gallery of 1935 50 - “Originality” and “superb quality of production” were some of the words used by our new issues editor in our June 1936 magazine to describe this set. The photo-based pictures feature sportsmen, royalty, politicians, films stars and other personalities whose prominence during the previous year had kept them in the public eye. Many are still famous and where else would you find Walt Disney, Joe Louis, Shirley Temple and Fred Perry rubbing shoulders with Fred and Ginger, Anthony Eden, The Aga Khan, Lawrence of Arabia and Spada the Corsican bandit? The last two had already met untimely deaths before the series was issued, Lawrence as a result of a motor-cycling accident in May 1935 and Spada at the guillotine the following month, so we are informed on the card backs. This set was also reprinted by the Card Collectors Society in 1999. This is a superb series which captures the spirits of the age. Cards size 68 x 36mm

Gallaher Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Tricks and Puzzles black back 1933 Tricks and Puzzles black back 1933 100 - Relatively simple tricks with matches, coins, handkerchiefs etc. can intrigue adults as well as mystifying children and so there is almost endless amusement to be gained from this series of 100 Tricks and Puzzles issued in 1933. The coloured fronts are carefully explained in the texts on the back so that even the least dexterous of us can become impressive exponents of sleight-of-hand. Among the tricks you can master are the getting a penny out from under a bottle without touching it, passing a tumbler through a table, bucket balancing etc. There are lots of tricks involving money, matchsticks and maths, but some are definitely not to be tried by children without supervision, such as the lighting a safety match with your boot trick or the breaking glass by setting fire to a thread of turpentine! All fascinating stuff. Cards size 63 x 38mm
