Lime Rock (USA) Military - General Series Heroes of The Persian Gulf 1991 Heroes of The Persian Gulf 1991 LT110 - As revealed on the very last card, this series is rather different from what the title would have us believe. In fact to quote from the cards “Heroes of the Persian Gulf cards are a celebration of American military technology.” What we have here are aircraft, ships, missiles and military hardware in general, with hardly a soldier in sight, and of course, no mention of the part played by Britain or the allies. Nevertheless this is a very good set. Size 89 x 64mm.

Dart (USA) Military - General Series Vietnam Series 2 1991 Vietnam Series 2 1991 LT100 - Perhaps not America’s finest period of history, U.S. involvement in the affairs of Vietnam can be traced back to the Cold War of the 1950s when President Kennedy pledged to stem the spread of communism. What followed is well documented in this card set showing action, military hardware and main political players, Nixon, Johnson, Ho Chi Minh etc. The final card puts the whole sorry sage into context. It shows the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington commemorating the names of more than 57,000 Americans killed in the conflict. Size 89 x 64mm.

Pacific (USA) Military - General Series World War II 1992 World War II 1992 LT110 - Whilst not dealing directly with the attack on Pearl Harbor which brought America into the war this set does cover the background and takes us through the Pacific campaign with some stunning photographs from the U.S. National Archives. The war in Europe is featured less comprehensively, concentrating on the American contribution. There are also sections dealing with war propaganda posters, key aircraft from both sides, war leaders including Hitler and Tojo and U.S. Commanders. J.F. Hitchmans Dairies Military & Armed Forces Aircraft of World War II (black back) 1966 Aircraft of World War II (black back) 1966 25 - In one of the most daring exploits of World War II, Guy Gibson and the crew of his 617 Squadron of Lancaster bombers attacked and breached the Ruhr dams with ‘bouncing bombs’. The resulting flood wrecked vast areas of war factories and power stations with devastating effects on German armament production. Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris, Bomber Command’s wartime chief, described the ‘Lanc’ as the greatest single factor in winning the war. More than 7,000 had been built when production ended in 1946. this iconic aircraft is one of 25 featured in Hitchman’s Aircraft of World War II, among which, needless to say are the Hurricane and Spitfire which played such an important part in the Battle of Britain. Other Allied aircraft in the set include the Mosquito, Mustang and B17 Flying Fortress, whilst the enemy’s armoury includes the Japanese Zero, a Heinkel bomber and several Messerschmitts – the 109, the 110 and the rocket-propelled 163 and the jet-propelled 262 introduced towards the end of the war, but too late to effect the outcome. Horsleys Stores Military & Armed Forces British Uniforms of the 19th Century 1968 British Uniforms of the 19th Century 1968 25 - Whilst the 19th century saw great industrial and scientific innovations it is best remembered for the growth of the British Empire and by the end of this century Queen Victoria ruled over a vast area on which the sun never set. All this was only possible however due to her army who in the early years were taking on and subsequently defeating the French army under Napoleon and by the end were engaged in various conflicts in South Africa. This set pictures some of the uniforms worn by regiments over the century. All are drawn in colour against pastel backgrounds. Sadly there is no background information on the reverse, but the excellent pictures go some way to make up for this. This set was also produced by Amalgamated Tob in 1957, Direct Tea c1960, United Dairies in 1962, S. Prior in 1965 and there was an anonymous issue c1965. Cards size 67 x 36mm

Players Reprinted Series History of Navel Dress 1930 (CCS reprint 2001) History of Navel Dress 1930 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - This colourful set, as the title suggests, features sailors apparel from a 10th century Saxon Buscarle right up to a Chief Engineer of 1879. Included is a seaman’s arctic kit from 1602 recorded as being worn while searching for the North West Passage, the wide canvas breeches of the seaman of 1690, the full skirted coat of an Admiral of 1748, the costume of a gunner of 1750 taken from an inventory of effects, a ship’s caulker of 1790 who unusually wears trousers and a ship’s cook with a wooden leg. The informative text on the reverse tells us that the navy were encouraged to recruit cooks from those who had been maimed. The card for the Seaman of 1805 shows him wearing striped blue trousers and sporting a pigtail which we are told was popular between 1785 and 1823. By 1854 during the war in the Crimea we are told seamen of the Naval Brigade usually wore a Scottish style cap such as a Glengarry or Kilmarnock. A colourful set backed by interesting information. Size 68 x 36mm.

Quaker Oats Military - General Series Armour Through the Ages 1963 Armour Through the Ages 1963 EL12 - These cards picture, in colour, the chain-mail and metal protection used by elite warriors of the past. We say elite not just because these suits of armour cost a fortune, but also because the backs name the person for whom the suit was made as well as giving further information on the type of protection and other features. The set begins with Richard I and his mail shirt or Malberk and ends with a mailed suit made for Charles II of England, although we are told that the late 1600s marked the end of full armour wearing and is known as the half armour period. Other cards include the black armour of Edward, Prince of Wales which led to his nickname ‘The Black Prince’, the elaborate German armour of Sigismund, Archduke of Tirol, the heavily engraved suit worn by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester who was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, the vast suit belonging to Henry VIII, the ornate armour of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain which was based on a Roman Legion’s uniform and Philip II of Spain’s mounted tilting armour. Badshah Tea Military & Armed Forces British Cavalry Uniforms of the 19th Century 1963 British Cavalry Uniforms of the 19th Century 1963 25 - The title says it all really – these are colour drawings of cavalrymen in their uniforms which are set against a pastel background and whilst the uniforms are portrayed in all their detail they do look a little odd as only the saddle and flank of the horse is portrayed. Among those featured are an officer of the 2nd Life Guards from the Waterloo period, an 1905 officer of the 7th Queen’s Own Light Dragoons, a trooper (c1815) of the Royal North British Dragoons better known as the Scots Greys, a ‘Blues’ trooper of the Royal Horse Guards, a Life Guards officer in dress uniform as worn at the Coronation of King George IV, a 3rd (King’s Own) Light Dragons trooper of 1832, a trooper of the 13th Light Dragoons who formed part of the Light Brigade at Balaclava and a Sergeant of the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons from 1896. The numbered backs give plenty of information on the regiments and these are well worth adding to any collection. This series was also issued by Browne, Empson, Golden Grain, Ringtons and Willcocks and Willcocks with just the issuer’s name different. The cards are size 67 x 36mm
