Faulkner Military - General Series Police Terms (with Faulkners on front) 1899 (reprint 1999) Police Terms (with Faulkners on front) 1899 (reprint 1999) 12 - This set was originally produced by W & F Faulkner in 1899 and was reprinted in 1989 with the firm’s name on the cards. The set was also reproduced in 1998 without the firm’s name on the front. These are not laugh-out-loud funny, but will raise a wry smile as the colour pictures humorously show another meaning for the words used. For instance the card titled ‘Police Court’ shows a policeman courting a lady, whilst ‘The thin blue line’ depicts a very skinny policeman. The backs are completely blank, but despite this it would make an interesting addition to any collection and is sure to be a hit with any Copper. Cards size 64 x 38mm.

Sweetule Military - General Series Weapons of Defence 1959 Weapons of Defence 1959 25 - This set of 25 titled Weapons of Defence can be more accurately described at weapons of attack as the majority of images depict weapons which can be used to attack on comers such as the Roman Catapult, Saxon Arms and the Mangonel which is a Norman Siege engine. These then progress to more modern times such as the US anti-tank vehicles and the Thunderbird. All cards illustrated in fantastic colour. They have white borders with no framlines. Glengettie Tea A Special Offer of £2, £3 and £5 Sets Medals of the World Black back 1961 Medals of the World Black back 1961 25 - This colourful set pictures famous medals including the Iron Cross of Germany, Burma Star, Victoria Cross, the U.S.S.R (Russian) Order of Glory, the Purple Heart of America, French Legion d’Honneur and Japanese Order of the Rising Sun. One of the more unusual medals featured is the Tibet Medal which was awarded by Edward VII to those who quelled disturbances in that region in 1904. There is plenty of information on the numbered backs including the fact that the Air Force Cross was awarded to officers for acts of bravery on flights not connected with operations against the enemy. This set has black text on the reverse with the company’s address at the bottom and was also available with blue text well as being issued by Amalgamated Tobacco with their “Mills Filtertips” brand in 1959. Sweetule Military & Armed Forces Naval Battles 1959 Naval Battles 1959 25 - This is an interesting idea for a set and one that must have provided a challenge to those in charge of illustration, but they have made a fine job of it and the colour pictures of ships in battle action are very well done. The set begins with a look at Romans against Carthaginians at time when ships required oarsmen to get them close enough to board each other. The romp through history continues with Drake’s fire-ships, the battle of Scheveningen in the war with the Dutch, the recapture of the ‘Hermione’, the capture of the ‘Serapis’ by John Paul Jones of the American navy, H.M. Brig Acorn chasing a slaver, Nelson’s flagship at Tragalgar, the ‘Shannon’ and Chesapeake in 1813, the Peruvian ‘Huascar’ which took on two Chilean ships, the battle of Santiago in the Spanish American War, the Battle of Jutland in the First World War and a number of cards featuring incidents in the Second World War including H.M.S ‘Warspite’ in action at Narvik, the torpedo of a Japanese cruiser off Singapore and the sinking of the German warship ‘The Bismarck’. There is plenty of information on the reverse about the naval action. This set was also issued by Amalgamated Tobacco c1958 and Glengettie Tea, Amaran Tea in 1971 and Hitchman Dairies in 1971. Colourful and educational so well worth adding to any collection. Cards size 67 x 36mm.

Midland Counties & Cadbury Military - General Series Action Soldiers 1976 Action Soldiers 1976 12 - Distributed as a joint promotion between Midland County and Cadbury these cards picture soldiers from different countries and the bottoms are designed to be folded and pushed out so the soldier will stand upright. The soldiers are all armed and ready, but sadly there is no information about them or their regiment. The backs tell us that you could “go into battle with these stand-up models of the world’s toughest fighting troops!”. Also on the backs is a mini picture of ice-cream with flakes and “99 Brigade” underneath which refers to the name of the ice-cream product rather than a regiment. This set was also issued by Mister Softee and Cadbury and Tonibell and Cadbury. An interesting set with cards size 70 x 29mm.

Anonymous Military & Armed Forces British Uniforms of the 19th Century Blue back c1965 British Uniforms of the 19th Century Blue back c1965 25 - Whilst the 19th century saw great industrial and scientific innovations it is best remembered for the growth of the British Empire and by the end of this century Queen Victoria ruled over a vast area on which the sun never set. All this was only possible however due to her army who in the early years were taking on and subsequently defeating the French army under Napoleon and by the end were engaged in various conflicts in South Africa. This set pictures some of the uniforms worn by regiments over the century. All are drawn in colour against pastel backgrounds. Sadly there is no background information on the reverse, but the excellent pictures go some way to make up for this. This set was also produced by Amalgamated Tob in 1957, Direct Tea c1960, United Dairies in 1962, S. Prior in 1965 and Horsleys Stores in 1968. Cards size 67 x 36mm

Swettenham Military & Armed Forces Evolution of The Royal Navy 1957 Evolution of The Royal Navy 1957 25 - These white bordered cards contain colour pictures of naval vessels from a ship of the time of Alfred the Great through to the aircraft carrier ‘HMS Eagle’ which had not long entered service. Along the way we see the ‘Sovereign of the Seas’ launched in 1637, examples of a Corvette, Frigate and Sloop, as well as ‘HMS Victory’, ‘Warrior’ which was Britain’s first ironclad ship, ‘HMS Hood’, ‘HMS Warspite’ and examples of a warship and submarine. There is plenty of information about the subject on the numbered card backs with an advert for their “Tea Tray Tea” at the bottom. This set was also issued by Amalgamated Tobacco with an advert for “Mills Filtertips” instead and with Cadet Sweets in 1960. A very good naval set with cards size 68 x 36mm.
