Oliver Amazing Black Friday to Cyber Monday Deals German Uniforms 1971 German Uniforms 1971 50 - Tony Oliver was a collector of military vehicles and expert on the Second World War who has produced sets on German transport, orders and decorations etc., and he now turns his attention to German uniforms. Some of the cards just picture the uniform and cap on their own, but the rest contain drawings of individuals in their uniforms. Included are a Drum Major of the H.J. Obergebiet 1 (Ost), a Marinescharführer (H.J. Obergebiet 3 West), a Sturmführer with pack of S.A. Group Niederrhein and numerous examples of the uniforms of the dreaded S.S. The limited text on the back just tells the rank, unit and the date they first saw service in 1933. These are both interesting and chilling at the same time, but are sure to appeal to anyone with an interest in the period. Size 62 x 36mm.

Glengettie Tea Military & Armed Forces Medals of the World Blue back 1961 Medals of the World Blue back 1961 25 - This colourful set pictures famous medals including the Iron Cross of Germany, Burma Star, Victoria Cross, the U.S.S.R (Russian) Order of Glory, the Purple Heart of America, French Legion d’Honneur and Japanese Order of the Rising Sun. One of the more unusual medals featured is the Tibet Medal which was awarded by Edward VII to those who quelled disturbances in that region in 1904. There is plenty of information on the numbered backs including the fact that the Air Force Cross was awarded to officers for acts of bravery on flights not connected with operations against the enemy. This set has blue text on the reverse and was also available with black text well as being issued by Amalgamated Tobacco with their “Mills Filtertips” brand in 1959. The cards are size 68 x 36mm

Amalgamated Tobacco Military & Armed Forces Naval Battles 1959 Naval Battles 1959 25 - This is an interesting idea for a set and one that must have provided a challenge to those in charge of illustration, but they have made a fine job of it and the colour pictures of ships in battle action are very well done. The set begins with a look at Romans against Carthaginians at time when ships required oarsmen to get them close enough to board each other. The romp through history continues with Drake’s fire-ships, the battle of Scheveningen in the war with the Dutch, the recapture of the ‘Hermione’, the capture of the ‘Serapis’ by John Paul Jones of the American navy, H.M. Brig Acorn chasing a slaver, Nelson’s flagship at Tragalgar, the ‘Shannon’ and Chesapeake in 1813, the Peruvian ‘Huascar’ which took on two Chilean ships, the battle of Santiago in the Spanish American War, the Battle of Jutland in the First World War and a number of cards featuring incidents in the Second World War including H.M.S ‘Warspite’ in action at Narvik, the torpedo of a Japanese cruiser off Singapore and the sinking of the German warship ‘The Bismarck’. There is plenty of information on the reverse about the naval action. This set was issued in Mauritius for the export market and issued in their ‘Mills’ cigarettes, but was also issued by Hitchman Dairies and Glengettie Tea in 1971 Amaran Tea in 1971and Sweetule Products in 1959. Colourful and educational so well worth adding to any collection. Cards size 67 x 36mm.

Tuff Stuff (USA) Military - General Series Remember Pearl Harbour 1991 Remember Pearl Harbour 1991 LT50 - December 7th, 1941, was a turning point in World War II when Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor, the Hawaiian island base of the American Pacific Fleet, sinking or crippling eight battleships and killing 3,600 men. Admiral Yamamoto had hoped the devastating strike would force a negotiated peace. Instead President Roosevelt addressed the American people with his “Day of Infamy” speech and declared that “a state of war now exists between the United States and the Japanese Empire”. This historic card series uses both black and white and colour photographs of the action, the men involved and the aftermath, with descriptive backs. Size 89 x 64mm.

Wiko (Germany) Military & Armed Forces Soldaten Der Welt (Soldiers of the World) 1969 Soldaten Der Welt (Soldiers of the World) 1969 50 - The set has German text. This set contains colour pictures of British, European and American soldiers in uniforms from the 18th century to the 1960s. Having said that over half of the set are British examples and most of these are from the 1960s. The numbered descriptive backs give regimental histories, battle honours and interesting facts. For instance we are told the French Foreign Legion wear a hat with sides known as a Kepi which offered protection against the hot North African sun. Interesting inclusions are a U.S. Military Policeman of the 1st Cavalry Division which was dismounted in 1942, a scruffy looking officer of Wurmser’s Free Corps., Austria 1793 who we are told has disregarded dress regulations, a French officer 1814 who’s uniform is described as the most elegant of all time, but not the most practical for action, a Prussian officer of Cuirassier Regiment No. 3 (1862) who’s helmet had a detachable silver eagle, a U.S. paratrooper from 1944, a private of the Gordon Highlanders, a WWII German infantry-man, a 1960s Trumpeter, King’s Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery, a Sergeant of the Glider Pilot Regiment formed in 1942 and a 1960s officer of the Royal Tank Regiment whose motto we are told is “Fear Naught”. An interesting set. Cards size 66 x 35mm. This set was also issued by Barrat & Co with English text

Bassett Military & Armed Forces Victoria Cross Heroes in Action 1970 Victoria Cross Heroes in Action 1970 25 - This series starts with the history of the award before going on via the Indian Mutiny, Boer War and World War I, but most of the cards feature incidents from the 2nd World War such as the raid on St. Nazaire, the attacks on Bismarck, Tirpitz and Scharnhorst, the attempt to assassinate Rommel and the Dambusters raid on the Ruhr dams. The fronts contain colour depictions of the action whilst the backs give appropriate information. As the first card says this “inexpensive little bronze cross is the highest award for courage that Britain bestows on those who have earned it” and boy did they earn it - many paying the ultimate price. This set was also produced with the title in white print on black and an album was originally issued to accompany this. A worthy set with cards size 65 x 35mm.

Anstie Military - General Series Lord Kitchener (Woven Silk Issue) c1915 Lord Kitchener (Woven Silk Issue) c1915 L1 - This is an image of Lord Kitchener printed on silk and set within a decorated oval with two British flags at the top. Lord Kitchener was a senior British army officer and colonial administrator who attained notoriety for his campaigns against the Boers in South Africa and for his role in the First World War. He was made Secretary of State for War at the start in 1914 and he is most famous as the face of recruitment posters for volunteers for the army which featured the slogan “Your Country Needs You”. At the time he was a popular figure, but after the war when the country faced up to the vast loss of life he became vilified. By then he was already dead having been killed following the sinking of HMS Hampshire in 1916. Modern historians looking back at his war service have gone some way to restoring his reputation, by pointing out that he had said from the start it would be a long war and had pointed out many of the difficulties as well as being a good organiser. This silk measuring 89 x 72mm would have adorned many a patriotic home during the First World War and it is well worth adding this little slice of history to your collection.

Beano Military & Armed Forces Ships of the Royal Navy 1955 Ships of the Royal Navy 1955 50 - In 1955, World War II was still fresh in many people's memory, the Korean War not longover, and the Cold War was at its height. The black & white photographs, by courtesy of the Admiralty, demonstrate the diversity of the vessels sailing under the White Ensign, from aircraft carriers such as H.M.S. Eagle and Illustrious tosubmarines and fast patrol boats, even one or two from the Royal Australian and Royal Canadian Navies, plus Royal Fleet Auxiliaries - Blue Ensign supply ships and tankers - all with highly informative texts.
