Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife Wild Life In Danger black back re-issue 1973 Wild Life In Danger black back re-issue 1973 50 - This is a re-issue of the 1963 blue back set that was issued with Brooke Bond tea and coffee and is a very fine series indeed. When this was reviewed in our magazine it was described as “A provocative title and a provocative set which should do immense good in the battle for the preservation of wild life” and it is sad to think that many of these species continue to feature on the endangered list. For some, like the Sumatran Rhino, Aye-aye, Kakapo and Ivory-billed Woodpecker the situation has unfortunately got worse and all of these are now on the critical list in danger of completely dying out in the wild. The situation is not without hope however as some, such as the Arabian Oryx and Hawaiian Goose have been pulled back from the brink and both are now listed as vulnerable rather than endangered. The numbers of Blue Whale have also improved. As for the Californian Condo this went completely extinct in the wild in 1987 which is no surprise as the card tells us there were only 60-65 left in 1963. Happily this magnificent bird was reintroduced in some US states and whilst still endangered the population is now increasing. Let us hope for a brighter future for all these wonderful species. There is comprehensive and interesting text in black on the reverse and an album was originally available to house these cards. With excellent colour pictures of creatures, which frankly you are unlikely to see in the wild this is a set not to be missed. Cards size 68 x 36mm

G D S Cards Animals & Wildlife Cattle Breeds 2007 Cattle Breeds 2007 EL4 - To the best of my knowledge this is the first series devoted to livestock since before the war. Pictured in colour are champion cows of four breeds, British Blonde, British Limousin, Hereford and Welsh Black, with their history and distinguishing characteristics described on the backs. I was surprised to discover that the British Linousin is now the largest numerical cattle breed, beef or dairy, in the UK with 35% of all calves born in the year 2006. Size 150 x 105mm

Angling Times Fish, Fishing & the Ocean Fishing Floats 1986 Fishing Floats 1986 M24 - These were originally issued in perforated strips with Angling Times during July and August 1986 and are similar to the paper’s earlier 1980 issues. The cards contain colour illustrations of floats and their uses and are numbered and titled at the top, with “Angling Times” at the base. The backs, printed in black and red on a white background, are also titled and numbered as well as containing information about the construction and usage of floats. All the fronts and backs are in vertical format and a plastic wallet was originally available to house these. Among the floats included are the Porcupine quill which we are told should be used in medium-paced rivers and can be used in flood conditions, a Bottom-end pole float which is constructed of two-inch peacock quill with cocktail stick glued into it, the Slider with balsa body for use in deep and slow lakes and the Crowquill Avon which we are told can be used on wide, deep waters where the prevailing wind is upstream. Ideal for anglers. Cards size 86 x 54mm.

Horniman Tea Dogs and Pets Pets 1960 Pets 1960 48 - These interesting cards were originally issued in packets of Horniman’s tea in 1960. The colour pictures by W. Suschitzky start with a few different dog and cat breeds, a rabbit and guinea pig, all perfectly standard, but then the creatures get more unusual and we would argue that many would be unlikely pets for the average household. These include a badger, fox cubs, red squirrel, bush baby, jay, slow worm, dormouse and natterjack toad. Most of these are protected species today and indeed for some their very existence is threatened so we can but hope they are not kept as pets these days. The text on the reverse of the cards was edited by naturalist Maxwell Knight and gives plenty of information on how to keep the pet safe and well including what to feed them and how they should be housed. The backs also tell us that an album to hold these cards could be obtained from grocers or direct from the company for 6d. With excellent pictures and informative text this is a well-rounded set and a must for anyone interested in wildlife. Cards size 68 x 38mm.
