Cadbury Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds in Springtime 1983 Birds in Springtime 1983 L12 - These cards feature stunning artwork by one of the world’s leading bird artists, Norman Arlott who has captured British birds about their springtime activities. These include a swallow building a nest, a shelduck with young, a robin courtship, nesting puffins, a marsh harrier food pass, a lapwing display flight when he shows off to the females, the unusual weed-dance of the great crested grebes, a cuckoo removing an egg from another bird nest so her own can be raised by the host instead, coots fighting, a singing chaffinch, young blue tits being fed and the amazing black grouse lekking when the males show off for the females. The cards were issued in conjunction with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and amongst the information on the card backs are details of the Young Ornithologists’ Club. A lovely set with cards size 80 x 70mm.

Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife African Wild Life black back re-issue 1973 African Wild Life black back re-issue 1973 50 - These cards are the work of internationally renowned wildlife painter C.F. Tunnicliffe who both illustrated the stunning pictures of animals from the African continent and wrote the descriptions on the reverse. He certainly knew his stuff as there are loads of interesting facts to learn like the fact that Nile Crocodiles cover their eggs with sand leaving them to be incubated by the sun, but dig them up when they are ready to hatch or did you know that Wart Hogs live in holes which they enter backwards so their formidable tusks face outwards. The animals pictured include a Lion, Gorilla, a delightful array of big cats including some like the Caracal and Genet which we had not heard of, s Banded Mongoose, Porcupine etc., but favourite drawings include the Jumping Hare in mid-flight with shadow underneath, Zebras and Sable Antelope at the watering hole, the tiny Klipspringer antelope leaping between rocks and a majestic male Elephant. This set was originally issued with a blue back in 1961, but was re-issued by Brooke Bond in 1973 with a black back. An album was also available to house this set. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Players Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds and Their Young 2nd Series (unissued) 1955 Birds and Their Young 2nd Series (unissued) 1955 25 - In 1955 Players prepared two sets of 25 cards for issue. The pictures and text for both these sets was taken from the 1937 set of the same name, but split into two sets of 25 and unlike the original issue these did not have adhesive backs or the album advert. We love the pictures in this second set showing a Mute Swan and cygnets, the Starling feeding its chick from a bowl, the adorably fluffy chicks of the Redshank, a Greenfinch who looks like he has had enough of his greedy chicks and the Bullfinches using teamwork to keep their chicks fed. A delightful set with cards size 66 x 36mm.

Molassine Dogs and Pets Dogs at Work 1971 Dogs at Work 1971 25 - This animal foods company were best known for their ‘Vims’ dog biscuits so it is no surprise that when they came to issue cards they picked dog related subjects. These colourful pictures show various types of working dogs such as a Belgian Sheep Dog which was used to pull sledges and carts, the Pyranean Mountain Dog used as a guard dog and guide in the mountains, the Whippet which was originally used for coursing, but now for running, the Cocker Spaniel which is used by hunters to flush and retrieve game, Poodles which apparently can be used for truffle hunting, Bloodhounds who can be used for tracking criminals by the police, the Rhodesian Ridgeback used by farmers which is able to work all day without water, the sheep herding Border Collie, the Schipperke which is bred to guard canal barges and who’s name means ‘Little Captain’, the Labrador which is today much used as a guide dog for the blind and the St. Bernard which was well-known as a rescue dog in the Alps. The backs are full of fascinating facts about the breeds including the fact the African hunting dog the Basenji has no bark so huntsmen tie a gourd filled with rattling pebbles around his neck in order to keep track of it in the long grass. A captivating canine set with cards size 67 x 35mm.

Marcantonio Animals & Wildlife Interesting Animals 1953 Interesting Animals 1953 50 - In the 1950s, when this set was issued, ‘Teddy Bear Lollies’ were a treat for children living in South London – not only for their delicious taste, but also because they included one of fifty Interesting Animal cards. These are unusual in that they are black ink drawings of animals rather than photos. We don’t know who was responsible for the pictures, but they are really good and show the creatures in their natural habitat. Included are exotic animals such as a moose, leopard, seal, polar bear, kangaroo, hippopotamus, lynx, lion, giraffe, tiger and camel, as well as the more familiar like cows, dogs, cats, rabbits, goat, pig and horse. The numbered backs give information about the creatures featured and details of a special album which could be obtained in exchange for 12 wrappers and ninepence in stamps. A lovely set for anyone interested in the natural world with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Carreras Fish, Fishing & the Ocean Sport Fish 1978 Sport Fish 1978 50 - This is set an angler’s dream as it not only contains rather good colour pictures of fish that can be caught in an around the British Isles, but the text on the back gives you helpful hints on when and where to find them, what sort of bait to use, the average weight, markings and habits. For instance we are told that the Porbeagle Shark averages 100lb and is an ideal quarry for big fish hunters. It can be found between June and October off the Isle of Wight, West Country and coast of Ireland, but you will need a heavy shark rod and 120lb line to go after this beauty. There are plenty of more common examples from our rivers and seas including Dace, Roach, Chub, Common Carp, Tench, Catfish, Perch, Eel, Pike, Trout (both Rainbow, Sea and Brown), Salmon, Dab, Flounder, Turbot, Mackerel, Common Skate, Pollack, Ling, Bass etc. Catching all of these would be quite a challenge and respect to any who have achieved this, but this set is not just for anglers as the detailed pictures are also worth adding to any collection, especially if you are a nature lover. Size 70 x 35mm. A special album to contain this set was also issued – see website for availability

Brooke Bond Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues The Sea Our Other World 1974 The Sea Our Other World 1974 50 - These colour pictures with interesting facts on the reverse deal with far more than just the creatures of the deep. We learn, for instance, about submarines, spearguns, divers, oil rigs, fishing, wrecks and even the sinking of Henry VIII’s flag ship Mary Rose. This is a fascinating set full of things you didn’t known about the oceans like the fact that the small sea snail, the murex, was used for years to make a purple dye. Apparently large quantities of these snails were needed to produce the colour leaving walls of solid murex shells outside Tyre and Siddon. An album was originally available to house this set. A fascinating look at all things relating to the sea. Cards size 68 x 36mm

Brooke Bond Brooke Bond Tea Card Issues Trees in Britain black back re-issue 1973 Trees in Britain black back re-issue 1973 50 - What we love about Brooke Bond sets, particularly those issued in the 1960s, is the amount of thought and research put into them – they were designed to be both attractive and educational and they don’t disappoint. This set looks at British trees, but as well as picturing the full-grown tree in all its glory you also get another card showing the leaves, seeds, fruit or nuts of that tree and the backs give loads of fascinating information about the species. For instance we learn that the Larch was introduced to Britain from Europe and the houses of Venice in Italy are supported on piles of Larch. Also included are the Scots Pine, the Stone Pine which is rare in Britain, the Juniper which produces berries often used to flavour gin, the long living Yew, Common Lime, the Sycamore with its winged seedpods, Horse Chestnut, the native Holly, the rare Spindle Tree, Gean or Wild Cherry which produces glorious white blossoms, Hawthorn who’s haws are popular with birds in winter, Rowan, Crab Apple, London Plane, the Elm which was once common, but was depleted due to disease, Silver Birch, Hornbeam, the familiar Hazel, Beech, Sweet Chestnut which produces chestnuts that can be roasted and eaten, Holm, Common Oak our most well-known tree, the Strawberry Tree and Ash one of the most common trees. An album was original available to house these cards which could be obtained from grocers at 6d. These black back cards are size 68 x 36mm and the original set was issued in 1973 with a blue back.
