Among the big names in this selection are Arsenal’s E. Drake and Alex James, L. Stoker of Birmingham, Liverpool’s G. Hodgson, Stoke City’s legendary Stanley Matthews and Sunderland’s J. Connor. A fine football set with cards size 68 x 50mm

Ardath Cricket Cricket, Tennis and Golf Celebrities 1935 Cricket, Tennis and Golf Celebrities 1935 50 - The sporting elite in this set includes Alfred Padgham, the 1936 British Open Golf Champion (one of 8 golfers), World No. 1 and 1934 Wimbledon Champion Fred Perry among twelve tennis players which also include Helen Wills-Moody, but thirty of the fifty cards are cricketers – and what a line-up! Harold ‘Bodyline’ Larwood whose bowling infuriated the Aussies, Frank Woolley the world’s greatest left-handed batsman, Gloucester’s Wally Hammond ‘one of the greatest all-rounders in the world’, Patsy Hendren who beat W.G. Grace’s record of 126 centuries, Hedley Verity who captured fifteen Australian wickets in a Test Match at Lords, and veteran Jack Hobbs having completed thirty year’s service with Surrey and is credited with scoring 199 centuries, a record which still stands today, who had just retired from first-class cricket at the age of 52. Brilliant stuff! Size 68 x 36mm

A & B C Football Footballers Scottish 1st Series (purple back) 1971 Footballers Scottish 1st Series (purple back) 1971 L73 - As the title suggests these cards picture Scottish players, many from teams north of the border, but some playing for English sides. Among them are Willie Johnston of Rangers, Newcastle’s Bobby Moncur, Denis McQuade of Partick Thistle, Manchester United’s Francis Burns, Joe Baker of Hibs, Alex Ferguson who was then playing for Falkirk but went on to manage Manchester Utd, Aberdeen’s Martin Buchan, Billy Dickson of Kilmarnock, Asa Hartford of West Bromwich Albion, Celtic’s Tommy Gemmell, Frank McLintock of Arsenal, Billy Bremner Leeds United’s wing half, Bobby Graham of Liverpool etc. The colour pictures are backed by interesting text, a “Did you know?” fact about the player complete with tiny cartoon and are bordered in purple. An excellent set which also includes a checklist card and a 2nd Series of these was also produced. Card size 81 x 56mm.

Phillips Sports Miscellaneous Sportsmen Spot the Winner normal back issue 1937 Sportsmen Spot the Winner normal back issue 1937 50 - Godfrey Phillips 50 Sportsmen Spot the Winner issued in 1937, is an unusual take on a familiar subject. The fronts contain head and shoulder pictures of famous sportsmen of the period, but the inverted text backs rather than having information about the sportsman have five horses who have all been assigned a different colour. The finish line is depicted as a target and we are informed that after you have chosen your horse you can moisten the winning post and the winning horse will be revealed. Obviously this is not something we would recommend doing! Included in this set are champion jockeys G. Richardson and Steve Donoghue, footballers Alex James and W. R (Dixie) Dean, boxers Len Harvey and Tommy Farr, Australian speedway rider Vic Huxley, well-known cricketers W. Hammond and H. Verity and legendary tennis champion Fred Perry. This set was produced in two printings this is the normal back issue. Size 68 x 36mm.

Ogdens Sports Miscellaneous Trick Billiards 1934 Trick Billiards 1934 50 - These contain trick shots performed by A. Newman-Mond who was an expert and knew every trick shot in the book. Indeed there is a British Pathe clip online from 1940 showing him in action. This set was also reprinted in 2001. The cards feature the green baize of the table with diagrams showing how to hit the balls to make the shot required and the numbered adhesive backs give full details of how to achieve this. We particularly like the ‘Potting a ball with a penny’ trick which uses a penny resting against a cushion as a cue-ball and we are told that you just had to tap the coin with the cue and the penny would roll in an arc and knock in the ball at the other end of the table. Mr Newman-Mond assures us that “with a little practice this trick can be done almost every time”. Somehow we doubt that, but it does make you want to have a go. Size 68 x 36mm.

Topps (UK) Football Footballers pink back 1980 Footballers pink back 1980 LT66 - This is an excellent football set which you could argue gives you more for your money as three players are shown per card (4 in the case of one of the cards which pictures two Crystal Palace players on one section plus Nottingham’s Stan Bowles and Newcastle’s Terry Hibbitt. The players are shown in colour and the card contains perforations, so the three cards could be separated. The pink backs contain a brief fact or two about the player and an individual number plus a football quiz question, the answer to which could be revealed by rubbing a coin in the blank box. Some of the players are grouped according to national team such as Colin Todd, Jimmy Nicholl and Alan Shoulder of Northern Ireland or England’s Kevin Keegan, Joe Corrigan and Kenny Burns with the rest just giving their name and club they played for. Amongst this batch are Tottenham’s Ossie Ardiles plus Everton’s Brian Kidd and Asa Hartford, Liverpool’s Jimmy Case, Stoke’s Garth Crooks and Tottenham’s Terry Yorath. Ideal for any football fan. Cards size 89 x 64mm

Wills Sports Miscellaneous Hurlers 1927 Hurlers 1927 50 - These cards contain black and white pictures of Hurlers with their name and club on the front (all Irish) and plenty of information concerning their career on the backs. The sport of hurling has ancient Gaelic/Irish origins and although very popular, particularly in Ireland, it is unusual to find it featured in a card set. In the game players use a wooden stick known as a hurl to hit a small ball called a sliotar between their opponent’s goalposts, either over the crossbar for 1 point or into the net for a goal and 3 points. The rules also allow for the ball to be carried in the hand for four steps or struck in the air or on the ground and it can also be kicked or slapped with an open hand for short range passes. Sadly the pictures are all head and shoulders pictures rather than action shots, but this is an interesting set and is sure to appeal to supporters of Ireland’s second most popular sport. Cards size 67 x 36mm.

Faulkner Sports Miscellaneous Old Sporting Prints 1930 Old Sporting Prints 1930 25 - Faulkner's 25 Old Sporting Prints takes us back to the 18th and 19th centuries with a series of contemporary paintings and lithographs illustrating sports of the period – and some fascinating facts like when the third stump was added in cricket. We see bloody spots such as cockfighting and bare-knuckle boxing, horse-racing including the Grand National and the Derby, hunting, shooting and fishing. Surprising inclusions are two cards of mail coaches – the Edinburgh Express and the Brighton Day Mail which are hardly sporting topics. Packed with interest, this is a set to savour. This set was also issued by Edwards, Ringer and Bigg and Mitchell. Size 68 x 36mm

Phillips Football Soccer Stars 1936 Soccer Stars 1936 50 - Founded in 1844, Godfrey Phillips were destined to become one of the “big boys” of the tobacco industry, but more importantly for collectors, they were prolific issuers of cards, producing well over one hundred different series between the 1890s and 1939. Towards the end of 1936 they launched three series of fifty footballers, Famous Footballers, International Caps and this series. The format of these was the same and they had many of the same players in common all depicted in colour head and shoulders pictures with interesting text on the adhesive backs giving not just career information, but interesting asides such as Worrall being considered the comedian of the Portsmouth team, that Arsenal were prepared to pay a world record fee of £12,000 for Hearts player T. Walker or that W.G. Richards bred Alsatians in his spare time. Among other well-known players are Arsenal’s E. Hapgood and E.J. Drake, Scottish born H. Gallacher of Derby County, Everton star ‘Dixie’ Dean and legendary Stoke player Stanley Matthews. This set is undoubtedly in the Premier League of football issues. Cards size 67 x 36mm
