Phillips Sports Miscellaneous Sportsmen Spot the Winner inverted back issue 1937 Sportsmen Spot the Winner inverted back issue 1937 50 - Godfrey Phillips 50 Sportsmen Spot the Winner issued in 1937, is an unusual take on a familiar subject. The fronts contain head and shoulder pictures of famous sportsmen of the period, but the inverted text backs rather than having information about the sportsman have five horses who have all been assigned a different colour. The finish line is depicted as a target and we are informed that after you have chosen your horse you can moisten the winning post and the winning horse will be revealed. Obviously this is not something we would recommend doing! Included in this set are champion jockeys G. Richardson and Steve Donoghue, footballers Alex James and W. R (Dixie) Dean, boxers Len Harvey and Tommy Farr, Australian speedway rider Vic Huxley, well-known cricketers W. Hammond and H. Verity and legendary tennis champion Fred Perry. This set was produced in two printings this is the inverted back issue. Size 68 x 36mm.

Sinclair Football Well Known Footballers North East Counties 1938 Well Known Footballers North East Counties 1938 50 - John Sinclair was a Newcastle-based family business which was taken over by Carreras in the early 1930s, but retained a large degree of independence and continued issuing their own card series until 1939. In 1938 they issued two sets of Well-Known Footballers one Scottish and the other, this set, which features North Eastern Counties. The cards are distinctive in that photographs of the players’ heads have been added to body caricatures drawn by “Bos” – a style later adopted by Carreras for several of their own Turf slide series. The players include Sunderland’s Patrick Gallacher, Middlesbrough’s George Camsell and Norman Tapken of Newcastle. The photographs were supplied by Topical Times magazine and the backs are full of information about the footballers. Cards size 68 x 35mm

Sinclair Football Well Known Footballers Scottish 1938 Well Known Footballers Scottish 1938 50 - John and Robert Sinclair set up their tobacco business in Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1856, but the partnership was dissolved in 1885. Each continued to trade independently until John’s company was taken over by Carreras in 1930 and Robert’s became an associate of I.T.C. Several photo-based series were issued by John Sinclair in the 1930s including this one, which unsurprisingly in view of the firm’s dominance in the North East and Scotland, looks at Scottish footballers. All were playing for Scottish clubs in 1938 and most of the major clubs are represented such as Celtic, Aberdeen, Dundee, Hearts, Hibs and Falkirk, with the surprising exception of Glasgow Rangers. Players include Willie Buchan, Tommy Walker and Bob Shankley. The presentation is unusual as photographs of player’s heads have been superimposed on caricature bodies drawn by the artist ‘Bos’. The backs give first-rate write-ups of each player’s history. An obvious “must” for anyone interested in football this set should have wider appeal. Cards Size 98 x 36mm.
