Dickson Orde Sports Miscellaneous Sports of the Countries 1962 Sports of the Countries 1962 25 - This is an interesting set of colour pictures of a sport with national flag in the corner and plenty of text on the back. Despite our failure to win most competitions football is given as England’s national sport and we are told that “the average Englishman takes an interest in at least one of the numerous sports practised, but it would be fair to said that soccer is the most popular”. Other sporting associations include bull-fighting and Spain, ice hockey and Canada, cricket and Australia, polo with India, baseball and America, Pakistan with hockey, China and table tennis etc., but there are some you might not instantly recognise as representing the country such as water polo with Hungary, basketball with Brazil, cycle racing with Italy, golf with South Africa, motor racing with France or fighting fish with Thailand (referred to as Siam on the card) and as Hawaii is part of the USA is it not cheating to include the island and surfing as America is already included? The cards are size 65 x 36mm.

Churchman Football Association Footballers 1st Series 1938 Association Footballers 1st Series 1938 50 - Some of the clubs which were in the Premiership in 2014 were also represented in this set, for instance Manchester United (W. Roughton and W. McKay), Arsenal (E. Drake & E Hapgood), Chelsea (V. Woodley & P. Buchanan), Manchester City (P. Doherty) and Liverpool (B. Nieuwenhuys). Seeing two Preston North End players (Andrew Beattie and George Mutch) included in the set, it occurs to us that they may well have encountered a star-to-be, Tom Finney, then a 16-year old ground staff boy at Preston. It’s also interesting to note that Stoke City’s Stanley Matthews “has been with the club since starting work in the office on leaving school. Capped when a schoolboy he is now England’s first choice.” Size 68 x 36mm

Daily Herald Horse Racing and the Turf Turf Personalities 1955 Turf Personalities 1955 32 - Few remember the Daily Herald newspaper now, but this was published between 1912 and 1964 when it ceased and was relaunched as the Sun. This set was issued with the paper and consists of numbered black and white pictures of jockeys and trainers, but sadly these are blank on the reverse. Among the jockeys is flat racing champion Gordon Richards, Charlie Smirke winner of eleven classic races, Doug Smith, T. Lowrey, Joseph Caldwell, William Nevett who was the leading jockey in the north, Ken Gethin and William Johnstone whilst the trainers include, N. Cannon of Druids Lodge, F. Templeman of Lambourn, V. Smythe of Epsom, Capt. C.F. Elsey of Malton, M. Marsh of Newmarket and H.G. Blagrave of Marlborough. Some of the cards are cut larger than others, but the average size is 62 x 37mm

Players Motoring History of Motor Racing (Plc printing) 1986 History of Motor Racing (Plc printing) 1986 M30 - Combining Graham Turner’s superb artwork with wonderfully informative and evocative texts, the cards begin the story with a 20mph Panhard in the 1890s and end with the 1985 John Player Special Lotus with carbon fibre chassis from the Lotus factory on a former wartime aerodrome at Hethel near Norwich. The early years culminate with the 1937 Mercedes-Benz W125 which established a Monaco lap record which would stand for eighteen years. After the war we find foreign makers such as Maserati, Ferrari, Matra, Alfa and Renault joined by British Vanwall, Cooper, Tyrrell, Williams and BRM, the last named featuring on no. 19 Graham Hill at the wheel winning in the rain at the Nurburgring in the 1962 World Championship. Mitchell Horse Racing and the Turf Old Sporting Prints 1930 Old Sporting Prints 1930 25 - This set takes us back to the 18th and 19th centuries with a series of contemporary paintings and lithographs illustrating sports of the period – and some fascinating facts like when the third stump was added in cricket. We see bloody spots such as cockfighting and bare-knuckle boxing, horse-racing including the Grand National and the Derby, hunting, shooting and fishing. Surprising inclusions are two cards of mail coaches – the Edinburgh Express and the Brighton Day Mail which are hardly sporting topics. Packed with interest, this is a set to savour.

Morris Dogs and Pets Racing Greyhounds 1939 Racing Greyhounds 1939 25 - We think this set was issued just before the Second World War broke out because the last reference in the text is to the withdrawal of one of the runners from the 1939 Greyhound Derby which had taken place in June that year. Greyhound racing in the 1920s and ‘30s had a huge following and that is reflected in the number of sets issued by manufacturers at the time, but this set was produced by the London firm of B. Morris under the brand title “Forecasta”. The cards picture top-class greyhounds born from 1935 to 1937, whilst the informative texts give their pedigree, owner, trainer, track and prize record etc. Greyhound racing was clearly a serious business if the amount of money involved is any example. For example, Ballyhennessy Sandhills on card 2 won more than £4,800 in just three races, which was a fortune in those days. Alas there is no longer dog-racing at White City and most of the other tracks around the country have also gone, but these fine animals will bring back memories for many. Cards size 64 x 38mm.

Players Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Cycling 1939 Cycling 1939 50 - Issued in 1939 with the assistance of the editor of “Cycling” magazine, the sequence begins with the Hobby-Horse, the bicycle’s pedal-free forerunner propelled by feet on the ground, through to modern in-door races on light-weight machines. Each technical advance is chronicled along the way, matched by superb illustrations which not only show how bicycles (and tricycles and tandems) have progressed over the years but also how fashions have changed. I cannot recommend this series more highly it is a credit to those who compiled it and it should be in your collection. Size 68 x 36mm
