Reddings Tea Ships & Shipping Ships of the World 1963 Ships of the World 1963 48 - This set contains colour pictures of vessels from the 1950s and ‘60s, but by far the best thing about these is the detailed text on the reverse from which you can learn not just the owners, specifications and type of cargo, but also the name of the captain. For instance the card for the “Canberra”, which was later used as a troop ship in the Falklands War, was captained by Commodore G.A. Wild, carried 2,1888 passengers in luxury and had a crew of 960. Other liners include R.M.S. “Windsor Castle”, S.S. “Rotterdam”, R.M.S. “Queen Elizabeth”, S.S. “Bremen”, R.M.S. “Rangitane”, S.S. “United States”, S.S. “Oriana” and S.S. “Southern Cross. It is not just passenger liners that are covered as there are fishing trawlers including the “Mary Craig”, cable ship C.S. “Retriever”, M.V. “Vasilios R” a tramp ship designed to navigate the St. Lawrence Seaway, tankers including Shell’s S.S. “Serenia”, a Trinity House pilot ship, a British Railways train ferry which operated between Harwich and Zeebrugge, coal ship M.V. “Corsea”, cargo vessels including a refrigerated fruit carrier owed by Fyffes and a River Thames clay transporter. There is no card number 13 in this set instead there is a card numbered 12A. In her review in our magazine in 1963 Dorothy Bagnall wondered if it could be that the compiler was superstitious, but who knows! This is a very fine set with cards size 68 x 38mm.

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Endangered Wildlife Grandee Issue 1984 Britains Endangered Wildlife Grandee Issue 1984 L32 - Originally issued with Player’s Grandee Cigars this is a first-class series of clear colour photographs featuring species either rarely seen or benefitting from conservation efforts. The cards are a mixture of horizontal and vertical format and the backs, printed in green and black on white, are numbered with comprehensive and informative text concerning distribution, breeding and the reason why they are vulnerable. The backs tell us about a free album that could be obtained from the manufacturers. The album was 210 x 150mm and contained an introduction by naturalist John F. Burton. Amongst the creatures featured are the Greater Horseshoe Bat which we are told can only be found in the south-west and Wales, the Natterjack Toad which used to be found on sandy heaths all over Britain and the Bittern which we are told was in worrying decline with less than 50 pairs left. This set was also issued with Player’s Doncella brand with the same pictures and text but with Doncella instead of Grandee. These beautiful and informative cards, size 90 x 50mm, add greatly to the appreciation of our wildlife.

The cards all have rounded corners and the name of the venue or player in a white box at the bottom. An excellent look at tennis in the late 1980s with card size 102 x 64mm.

British American Tobacco (without firms name) Reprinted Series Lighthouses 1926 (reprint 2000) Lighthouses 1926 (reprint 2000) 50 - These cards take a look at lighthouses around the British Isles. Some are well-known like those at Dungeness, Spurn Head, Bishop Rock on the Isles of Scilly, Flamborough Head near Scarborough, Smeaton Tower or Eddystone Lighthouse in Plymouth or Corbiere Lighthouse on Jersey, but no matter where they are they have all at some time or another been built to prevent shipping from disaster. When this set was produced many of these structures were still manned and in use and you have to admire the courage of the lighthouse keepers in their lonely structures buffeted by wind and sea. The lighthouses are pictured in colour on the front and the backs give the history, details of the range of its light and fog warning system. This set was also produced by British American Tobacco and by Wills with their ‘Three Castles’ overseas brand. A fascinating set with cards size 67 x 35mm.

For instance, the Tsintaosaurus has a defensive score of 22 and a special feature score of 35 due to a tall bony spike between its eyes, whilst the Iguanodon has a defensive score of 64 and a special feature score of 75 due to is grasping tongue. Other information on the back tells you how to pronounce the name, what they ate, where they lived and their weight, height and length. With 90 in the set all your favourites are bound to be included like the Diplodocus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus, but there are plenty of others worth a mention including the Compsognathus which was one of the smallest dinosaurs and the Anatosaurus which has an almost human posture, but a bill like a duck. The cards have different coloured borders and backs according to which category they belong to so the Triceratops has a blue border as this is a armoured plant-eater, whilst the Velociraptor has a yellow border as it is a two-legged meat eater. Gallaher Flowers and the Garden Garden Flowers 1938 Garden Flowers 1938 48 - Most of the subjects in this series are instantly recognisable even to those of us who are not regular viewers of “Gardener’s World”, but some are less familiar – Lychris, Layia and Hemerocallis being cases in point – see them for yourself on 43,31 and 18 respectively. A surprising inclusion is Apple Blossom (no. 5) which I’m sure most of us wouldn’t count as a ‘garden’ flower, but when all’s said and done it doesn’t really matter because they’re lovely to look at and the backs tell you how to grow them successfully . The set covers all manner of diving things including life-saving breathing apparatus and a recompression chamber, communication underwater, diving pumps, airlocks and salvage operations including that on HMS Gladiator which was sunk in the Solent in 1908. There is plenty of fascinating information on the card backs including the harrowing fact that divers working on the reclamation of the Gladiator in the pitch black and confined spaces had to shoulder aside the corpses of the sailors in order to close the watertight doors so she could be pumped out. Topps (UK) American Football, Baseball, Basketball & Ice Hockey American N F L Football 1987 American N F L Football 1987 M88 - American Football has grown in popularity in the UK fed perhaps by the willingness of TV channels to cover the matches and the fact that some of the big names now play the occasional game over here. This set, which comes in its own little box with checklist on the back, looks at some of the top players from clubs such as the Giants, Redskins, Patriots, 49ers, Oilers etc. They are pictured in colour on the front and the numbered backs give facts such as height and passing record as well as a football term explanation such as “Audible A change of plays shouted in code at the line of scrimmage”. Card numbers 1 to 75 are all players then numbers 76 to 87 contain a sectional picture of players in action on one side with a different sectional puzzle of Bears’ defender William “Refrigerator” Perry on the other and card 88 is a checklist. A must for any fan of the sport with cards 76 x 55mm.
