CEDE Stamps, Coins & Banknotes Coins of the World 1956 Coins of the World 1956 25 - Looking at this set makes you realise how many currencies have changed over the years especially as many in this set date from the 1920s and ‘30s rather than the 1960s when this was issue. The Euro has now seen the end of the likes of the Franc, Mark and Escudos and our own currency also changed with the advent of decimalization so these are a nice historical record. What we like about this set is that as well as the depiction of a relevant coin the card also pictures a typical scene, such as the Great Wall of China alongside their 1927 1 dollar piece or the Statue of Liberty alongside a 1 dime coin. Interestingly as well as major countries the set also includes a Jersey coin which is pictured alongside Corbière lighthouse. This series was also produced by Amaran Tea in 1965 and Amalgamated Tobacco in 1960. An interesting set with cards size 67 x 36mm.

Moffat Stamps, Coins & Banknotes Money That Made History 1971 Money That Made History 1971 EL102 - This unusual set on paper reproduces bank notes from history and the informative backs tell you about the note and its importance as well as telling you what it was worth in 1971. Included is a Polish 100 Zloty note which was overprinted by the Germans following their invasion “For the Occupied Polish Territories”, a German 1000 mark note from 1910 which by 1920 wouldn’t even pay for a box of matches, a 1000 note of the Ming dynasty in China where paper money was invented, from Great Britain there is a £50 note issued by the Gloucestershire Banking Company and a 1 hour note issued by Richard Owen who thought people should be paid in hours not pounds, then there is a $10 Confederate note from America, a 10 rouble note from Imperial Russia, a Tibetan 100 strang, a 60 livres note from the French Revolution, a South African banknote designed by Baden-Powell during the siege of Mafeking, colourful South American banknotes, a Chinese 10 Yuan communist note and the rare £10 Biafran note used during Biarfra’s brief independence before being retaken by Nigeria. This fascinating set is in a mixture of sizes with the largest being 146 x 107mm and the smallest 147 x 67mm.

Bon Air (USA) Birds, Butterflies & Moths Federal Duck Stamps (Ducks featured on Stamps) 1982 Federal Duck Stamps (Ducks featured on Stamps) 1982 LT62 - On the face of it an unusual subject, but every year since 1934 the United States Postal Service has issued a stamp featuring a different breed of waterfowl, and each of these is pictured in this series through to 1995. The reproduction is excellent and the illustrations have become more colourful as the years passed and so has the face value, from $1 to $15. A checklist card shows the print-quantity of each stamp. Descriptive backs. Size 89 x 64mm.

Bon Air (USA) Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds and Flowers of the States 1991 Birds and Flowers of the States 1991 LT50 - There used to be 48, then came Hawaii and Alaska in 1959 to complete the fifty United States of America. In 1982 the U.S. Postal Service produced a 20 cent stamp for each state depicting the state bird and flower. These have now been reproduced as a boxed set of cards which have interesting facts about the state on the numbered backs. Apparently the stamps were praised as the most attractive ever produced in that country. Enlargement to this size further enhances their appearance and you will learn more about America from the card backs than you would from a modern ‘A’ level course. Highly recommended. Size 89 x 64mm

Woods Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Romance of the Royal Mail 1935 Romance of the Royal Mail 1935 25 - This set covers the history of the postal service from the mounted relays of the 15th century, via letter-carriers and mail coaches of the 18th century (the first of which ran from Bristol to London in 17 hours on August 2nd 1784), early mail trains of the 1830s, postcards which were first used in the 1870s, early mail vans which began service in 1898, the first airmail in 1911, a Great War field post office and 1930s sorting machinery through to the Post Office which never closes in London’s Leicester Square. In this history of the postal service in this country there are a couple of unusual inclusions such as Thomas Waghorn and the Indian Mail and mail delivery in the Tonga Islands where apparently mail is sealed in petrol tins and thrown in the Pacific for natives to swim out and collect! The charming and distinctive colour artwork is backed by plenty of text and the cards are size 64 x 38mm.
