Harden Animals & Wildlife Animals of the World 1959 Animals of the World 1959 50 - This set, issued with the company’s Doctor Ceylon Tea, contains colourful animal drawings set within a white border and there is plenty of accompanying text on the reverse. Some of our favourite animal illustrations include the wolf at night, the mouse, the charging warthog, the lion, jaguar, tiger, elephant, the polar bear, the kudu in flight, walrus, tortoise and buffalo. An album was originally available to house this and the set was also produced by an anonymous issuer in 1954 and with Dryfood’s confectionery products in 1956. A charming set with cards size 69 x 37mm.

Gallaher Animals & Wildlife Wild Animals 1937 Wild Animals 1937 48 - This set was issued in 1937 and when it was reviewed in our magazine that year we described it as being nicely produced and said that “the compilers have shown commendable originality in the choice of subjects, many out of the way types such as the platypus, rare foxes, jerboa, tenrec, panda, pangolin and others being illustrated as well as many of the more familiar wild animals”. We would have to agree with this statement, but would add that these have first class colour artwork and the text includes some delightful touches such as the puma “purrs when pleased and like a kitten will jump to catch butterflies or play for hours by itself at hide-and-seek.” It also added that it is “friendly to man”, but alas man has not proved a good friend to the puma or many other species. We can’t praise this series highly enough. Cards size 63 x 37mm.

Cadbury Animals & Wildlife Dangerous Animals 1970 Dangerous Animals 1970 48 - This is an interesting set which pictures dangerous creatures, although the text on the backs acknowledges that some actually have a bad press and are not that dangerous to man, like the Tarantula which can bite, but although this is painful it is not life threatening and indeed many people keep these spiders as pets. Man himself is pictured on the last card which tells us that mankind is without doubt the most dangerous of all accounting for more destruction than any other living being. Some interesting facts do emerge such as Africans would rather face a lion than a leopard as for sheer savagery it has no equal, or that a python is able to swallow a whole deer and one was found with a fully-grown leopard inside. Other dangerous creatures include the tiny mosquito whose deadly bite carries malaria which kills thousands each year, the black widow spider with a poison 15 times worse than a rattlesnake, polar bears, vampire bats who lap blood, grizzly bears, wild boar, hippos, rhinos etc. Ideal for anyone interested in wildlife. Size 73 x 32mm.

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Nocturnal Wildlife Doncella Issue 1987 Britains Nocturnal Wildlife Doncella Issue 1987 L30 - In the history of cigarette cards tens of thousands of different series have been issued including many hundreds on a wildlife theme, but this is one of the first and only sets devoted entirely to ‘creatures of the night’. These were originally packed with ‘Doncella’ cigars and an alike set was also issued with their ‘Grandee’ brand. The thirty cards (6 vertical, 24 horizontal) bear incredibly clear colour photographs of various types of animal which come to life at night with numbers 1 to 8 being mammals such as a hedgehog, bat or fox, numbers 9 to 14 being birds, 15 to 18 covers reptiles, fish and molluscs, 19 to 26 are insects with spiders and crustaceans finishing the set. All have white borders and the numbered backs are full of interesting information as well as an acknowledgement to the photographer concerned and details of an album which was available from the issuers. A spectacular set with cards size 89 x 50mm.
