Millhoff Animals & Wildlife Real Photographs 1st Series glossy front (Comic Animal Pictures) 1931 Real Photographs 1st Series glossy front (Comic Animal Pictures) 1931 27 - What’s not to love about these charming sepia animal pictures which are humorously captioned underneath. For instance the picture of a dog with a bone is titled “A bone to pick with you” whilst another depicts three concerned looking cats on stools with the caption “was that a mouse?” It is not just cats and dogs either as there are cattle, horses and chimps and one card even features a small boy feeding a dog. It is said today that many hours are ‘wasted’ looking online at the antics of animals and perhaps this set is a 1930s version of this. The backs are numbered and contain an advert for “De Reszke – The aristocrat of Cigarettes” and the Millhoff name. This set was also produced with matt photos (see website for availability) and both are size 66 x 35mm

Players Animals & Wildlife British Mammals Grandee PLC Issue 1982 British Mammals Grandee PLC Issue 1982 L30 - This is a stunningly beautiful set which reproduces the artwork of Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935). His depictions are so life-like you feel you can almost touch the creatures which include a superb picture of a mole capturing a worm, the Dormouse which is on the endangered list, a Long-Eared Bat, the nocturnal Hedgehog, Water Shrew, rare Wild Cat, Fox, Grey Seals, Common Seals, Otter, Badgers, the hard to spot Pine Marten, Polecat, a Stoat in both summer and winter coat, Britain’s smallest carnivore the Weasel, Red Squirrel, Red Deer, Roe Deer, Woodmice, House Mouse, Yellow-Necked Mouse, the unpopular Brown Rat, Brown and Mountain Hares, Rabbit, White Cattle which we are told are kept as wild herds in some parks, the Orca or Killer Whale and Walrus which are occasional visitors to these shores and the Common Porpoise. There is plenty of information on the card backs and a special album was originally available to house this set which was also issued with “Doncella” in 1983 and with ‘Grandee Ltd in 1982’. Cards size 90 x 50mm.

Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife African Wild Life blue back 1961 African Wild Life blue back 1961 50 - These cards are the work of internationally renowned wildlife painter C.F. Tunnicliffe who both illustrated the stunning pictures of animals from the African continent and wrote the descriptions on the reverse. He certainly knew his stuff as there are loads of interesting facts to learn like the fact that Nile Crocodiles cover their eggs with sand leaving them to be incubated by the sun, but dig them up when they are ready to hatch or did you know that Wart Hogs live in holes which they enter backwards so their formidable tusks face outwards. The animals pictured include a Lion, Gorilla, a delightful array of big cats including some like the Caracal and Genet which we had not heard of, s Banded Mongoose, Porcupine etc., but favourite drawings include the Jumping Hare in mid-flight with shadow underneath, Zebras and Sable Antelope at the watering hole, the tiny Klipspringer antelope leaping between rocks and a majestic male Elephant. This set was also re-issued with a black back in 1973. An album was also available to house this set. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Players Animals & Wildlife Dogs Scenic backgrounds 1924 (C.C.S. reprint 1997) Dogs Scenic backgrounds 1924 (C.C.S. reprint 1997) 50 - Originally issued in 1924 this delightful set featuring lovely dog pictures was reprinted in 1997. The dogs are set within appropriate backgrounds and many of the cards contain more than one example of the breed. We love the pictures of the Bulldog guarding his bowl, Otterhounds paddling in the stream, the Labrador Retriever with a duck in its mouth or the Yorkshire Terrier next to his cushion. There is informative text on the reverse full of facts about the breed. A lovely set with cards size 68 x 36mm

Cavanders Animals & Wildlife Animal Studies 1936 Animal Studies 1936 36 - The animals are pictured in sepia coloured photographs with a humorous caption underneath and there are plenty of cute shots to make you go ahh! Cats and dogs dominate, but the set also includes, chimps, a gorilla, a donkey, a lion, budgies and even a highland cow and calf. There are also a couple of inappropriate cards. One of these shows a small child riding an Alsatian, which is definitely not to be encouraged and the other is a lovely picture of nine black Labradors at a table, but sadly I can’t illustrate this either as the caption is unacceptable. Aside from this the set is charming and the captions really add to the pictures. The numbered backs contain the series title and explain that these were “Issued by Cavanders Ltd of London, England. The firm of Three Centuries. Established – 1775”, but sadly there is no information on the pictures or photographers. Lovely pictures for any animal lover. Size 68 x 36mm

Players Animals & Wildlife Famous Irish Bred Horses 1936 (CCS Reprint 2001) Famous Irish Bred Horses 1936 (CCS Reprint 2001) 50 - There are some fine equine examples in this set of colour pictures including “Windsor Lad” which was bred in Dunboyne, County Meath and earned the title “Horse of the Century” due to victories in the Derby, St. Leger, Coronation Cup etc., “Ard Patrick” which in 1903 was sold to an agent from the German government, “Bahram” who’s winnings totalled £43,086½ after two seasons, “Brown Jack” who won the Alexandra Stakes at Ascot six years in succession etc. The backs are full of interesting facts about the horses and their life. For instance we are told that “Mr Jinks” is a descendant of “The Tetrarch” and inherited his grey coat colour. This set is a celebration of champion horses in their prime with cards. Size 68 x 36mm

Morris Animals & Wildlife Whipsnade Zoo 1932 Whipsnade Zoo 1932 25 - In the 1920s when Whipsnade was conceived attitudes towards wildlife in general and animal welfare in particular were somewhat different from those of today with exploitation rather than conservation the principal aim. The vision of Whipsnade therefore is all the more remarkable ad the backs of these cards emphasize the point explaining it consists of five hundred acres of formerly rough farmland, fifteen times the size of London Zoo from where many of the animals were brought by the Royal Zoological Society and “it is the intention to retain the natural wilderness of Whipsnade.” Also “nothing has been left to chance with regard to the health and comfort of the animals and birds, to the extent that electricity has been conducted from Luton not just for lighting but as a means of providing warmth for the more sensitive members”. The colour pictures are excellent and whether or not you support the idea of Zoos, even “open” ones like Whipsnade, this set is quality and worth a place in any collection. Cards size 68 x 36mm.
