Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife Going Wild Wildlife Survival 1994 Going Wild Wildlife Survival 1994 M40 - This set pictures creatures from around the world and the backs give information about their habitat, diet etc., as well as a survival score and details of how their existence is threatened and why they are in trouble. For instance the Mediterranean Monk Seal only has a survival score of 11 out of 40 because although hunting is illegal some are still killed by fishermen and tourism is affecting their breeding beaches. By contrast the card for the Lion gives a survival score of 25 as although once hunted they are now thriving in Africa’s national parks. An educational set worthy of any collection. Card size 78 x 47mm. This was also produced as an extra-large set of 20 with two pictures per card. and a special album was also issued. (see website for availability)

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Endangered Wildlife Grandee Issue 1984 Britains Endangered Wildlife Grandee Issue 1984 L32 - Originally issued with Player’s Grandee Cigars this is a first-class series of clear colour photographs featuring species either rarely seen or benefitting from conservation efforts. The cards are a mixture of horizontal and vertical format and the backs, printed in green and black on white, are numbered with comprehensive and informative text concerning distribution, breeding and the reason why they are vulnerable. The backs tell us about a free album that could be obtained from the manufacturers. The album was 210 x 150mm and contained an introduction by naturalist John F. Burton. Amongst the creatures featured are the Greater Horseshoe Bat which we are told can only be found in the south-west and Wales, the Natterjack Toad which used to be found on sandy heaths all over Britain and the Bittern which we are told was in worrying decline with less than 50 pairs left. This set was also issued with Player’s Doncella brand with the same pictures and text but with Doncella instead of Grandee. These beautiful and informative cards, size 90 x 50mm, add greatly to the appreciation of our wildlife.

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Nocturnal Wildlife Grandee Issue 1987 Britains Nocturnal Wildlife Grandee Issue 1987 L30 - In the history of cigarette cards tens of thousands of different series have been issued including many hundreds on a wildlife theme, but this is one of the first and only sets devoted entirely to ‘creatures of the night’. These were originally packed with ‘Doncella’ cigars and an alike set was also issued with their ‘Grandee’ brand. The thirty cards (6 vertical, 24 horizontal) bear incredibly clear colour photographs of various types of animal which come to life at night with numbers 1 to 8 being mammals such as a hedgehog, bat or fox, numbers 9 to 14 being birds, 15 to 18 covers reptiles, fish and molluscs, 19 to 26 are insects with spiders and crustaceans finishing the set. All have white borders and the numbered backs are full of interesting information as well as an acknowledgement to the photographer concerned and details of an album which was available from the issuers. A spectacular set with cards size 89 x 50mm.

Phillips Animals & Wildlife Animal Studies 1936 Animal Studies 1936 M30 - We just love the pictures in this set which have so much character they include the Indian Rhino, Lion, Tiger, Northern Fur Seal, Elk, Reindeer, Polar Bear, Indian Wild Boar, Elephant, Hippopotamus, Chamois, Walrus, Zebra, Tasmanian Devil, Puma, Red Kangaroo, Cheeta, and Black-backed Jackal many of which are today is in danger due to habitat loss or poaching. There are a couple of more familiar UK creatures too such as the Fox and Badger. The lovely colour pictures are backed by a small write-up about the creature concerned. For instance we learn that the Black-backed Jackal is the enemy of the sheep farmers who pay a reward of seven or sixpence per tail for its destruction. We are also told that the Puma is fond of horse-flesh, but is noted for its friendly disposition towards man – we don’t think it would be a good idea to put that to the test! The cards are size 60 x 53mm.

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Wayside Wildlife (Flowers, Animals etc) 1988 Britains Wayside Wildlife (Flowers, Animals etc) 1988 L30 - These were issued with Player’s ‘Grandee’ cigars and were prepared by Bruce Burton a naturalist and author who had been responsible for some of Player’s other wildlife issues. These use colour photographs from a variety of sources to show with superb clarity some of the rich variety of animals, birds, reptiles, insects and plants to be found in Britain’s hedgerows and wayside verges, an environment which has become increasingly important as a wildlife reserve. The excellent pictures (6 vertical and 24 horizontal, with some having two pictures showing different aspects such as a caterpillar and butterfly) have a white border and the numbered and titled backs are full of fascinating facts. Among our favourite pictures are the Stoat which is standing on its hind legs, the beautifully marked Kestral and a stunning close-up of a Thick-legged Flower Beetle on a yellow flower. A 16-page album was also originally issued to house this set with additionally information. A very impressive set with cards 89 x 50mm.

Sketchley Animals & Wildlife Nature Series 1960 Nature Series 1960 25 - This set contains colour pictures of creatures or plants. In a break from the normal rather than look at animals this shines the light on insects, amphibians, arachnids, plants etc. For instance we see different varieties of Sea Slugs, the birth of frogs and newts, the world’s largest flower, jelly fish, a giant crab, a special birds nest, the use of colours as warnings in reptiles, corals, minute life in ponds and streams, the remarkable sight of driver ants attacking a snake, a sperm whale catching a squid, how water spiders use their diving bell, magnified water mites, star fish and the stages in the birth of a dragon fly. The text on the back gives plenty of explanation concerning each of these wonders making these educational as well as attractive cards. This was also issued by Amalgamated Tobacco as a set titled Nature and Sweetule Products both in 1958. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Keulemans is the artist responsible for these pictures of monkeys from African, South America and South East Asia, plus the Orang-utan which is an ape rather than a monkey. The illustrations demonstrate the amazing diversity of this group of primates, and the texts, as well as describing their habitat, appearance and lifestyle, also brings us up-to-date on their risk status, such as the bald-headed Uakan being “considered ‘near threatened’ by the 2004 World Conservation Union Red List”.
