Victoria Gallery Animals & Wildlife Endangered Wild Animals Promotional Card (Tiger) 1992 Endangered Wild Animals Promotional Card (Tiger) 1992 L1 - This card was issued to promote Victoria Gallery’s excellent Endangered Wild Animals set and features superb pictures of tigers. The card back gives information on the many sub-species of tiger and shocking details of just how few there are left of some of these. For instance the Siberian tiger has an estimated population of just 200-300 and the Javan and Balinese tigers are already extinct. The Bengal tiger is the most successful, but so only 4000 are estimated to live in the wild. Size 79 x 63mm

Cardlynx Animals & Wildlife Horses 2007 Horses 2007 L6 - With so many different breeds it must have been difficult to choose just six for this set. Of these, probably the Shire, the quintessential English draught horse will be the most familiar, together with the Arab, one of the purest and oldest breeds. Less well-known to the layman will be the Irish Draught, Friesian, Quarter and Missouri Fox Trotter. Subjects skilfully portrayed. Descriptive backs. Size 79 x 63mm.

Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife African Wild Life black back re-issue 1973 African Wild Life black back re-issue 1973 50 - These cards are the work of internationally renowned wildlife painter C.F. Tunnicliffe who both illustrated the stunning pictures of animals from the African continent and wrote the descriptions on the reverse. He certainly knew his stuff as there are loads of interesting facts to learn like the fact that Nile Crocodiles cover their eggs with sand leaving them to be incubated by the sun, but dig them up when they are ready to hatch or did you know that Wart Hogs live in holes which they enter backwards so their formidable tusks face outwards. The animals pictured include a Lion, Gorilla, a delightful array of big cats including some like the Caracal and Genet which we had not heard of, s Banded Mongoose, Porcupine etc., but favourite drawings include the Jumping Hare in mid-flight with shadow underneath, Zebras and Sable Antelope at the watering hole, the tiny Klipspringer antelope leaping between rocks and a majestic male Elephant. This set was originally issued with a blue back in 1961, but was re-issued by Brooke Bond in 1973 with a black back. An album was also available to house this set. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Marcantonio Animals & Wildlife Interesting Animals 1953 Interesting Animals 1953 50 - In the 1950s, when this set was issued, ‘Teddy Bear Lollies’ were a treat for children living in South London – not only for their delicious taste, but also because they included one of fifty Interesting Animal cards. These are unusual in that they are black ink drawings of animals rather than photos. We don’t know who was responsible for the pictures, but they are really good and show the creatures in their natural habitat. Included are exotic animals such as a moose, leopard, seal, polar bear, kangaroo, hippopotamus, lynx, lion, giraffe, tiger and camel, as well as the more familiar like cows, dogs, cats, rabbits, goat, pig and horse. The numbered backs give information about the creatures featured and details of a special album which could be obtained in exchange for 12 wrappers and ninepence in stamps. A lovely set for anyone interested in the natural world with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Kane Animals & Wildlife Wild Animals 1954 Wild Animals 1954 K50 - These cards may be tiny, but they still pack a punch with excellent black and white photos of creatures accompanied by informative text on the reverse. The featured wild animals include a Tiger, Brown Bear, Cheetah, Polar Bear, Zebra, Nile Crocodile, Lion, European Badger, African Python, American Bison Ring-tailed Lemur, Elephant and Giraffe as well as the more unusual Chital, Drill, Kongoni, Sambar and Tree Hyrax. This last creature is most unusual as although it is only slightly larger than a Rabbit it is actually related to the Elephant. An interesting set for any wildlife enthusiast with cards size 35 x 33mm.

Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife Wild Life In Danger black back re-issue 1973 Wild Life In Danger black back re-issue 1973 50 - This is a re-issue of the 1963 blue back set that was issued with Brooke Bond tea and coffee and is a very fine series indeed. When this was reviewed in our magazine it was described as “A provocative title and a provocative set which should do immense good in the battle for the preservation of wild life” and it is sad to think that many of these species continue to feature on the endangered list. For some, like the Sumatran Rhino, Aye-aye, Kakapo and Ivory-billed Woodpecker the situation has unfortunately got worse and all of these are now on the critical list in danger of completely dying out in the wild. The situation is not without hope however as some, such as the Arabian Oryx and Hawaiian Goose have been pulled back from the brink and both are now listed as vulnerable rather than endangered. The numbers of Blue Whale have also improved. As for the Californian Condo this went completely extinct in the wild in 1987 which is no surprise as the card tells us there were only 60-65 left in 1963. Happily this magnificent bird was reintroduced in some US states and whilst still endangered the population is now increasing. Let us hope for a brighter future for all these wonderful species. There is comprehensive and interesting text in black on the reverse and an album was originally available to house these cards. With excellent colour pictures of creatures, which frankly you are unlikely to see in the wild this is a set not to be missed. Cards size 68 x 36mm

G D S Cards Animals & Wildlife Cattle Breeds 2007 Cattle Breeds 2007 EL4 - To the best of my knowledge this is the first series devoted to livestock since before the war. Pictured in colour are champion cows of four breeds, British Blonde, British Limousin, Hereford and Welsh Black, with their history and distinguishing characteristics described on the backs. I was surprised to discover that the British Linousin is now the largest numerical cattle breed, beef or dairy, in the UK with 35% of all calves born in the year 2006. Size 150 x 105mm
