Cadet Sports Miscellaneous Record Holders of the World 1956 Record Holders of the World 1956 50 - You might imagine the record holders are all sportsmen and indeed there are quite a few included like skater Hjalmar Andersen, weight-lifter Paul Anderson, motorcyclist Geoffrey Duke, athlete John Landy, long distance runner Emil Zatopek, record-breaking Roger Bannister, cricketer Denis Compton and racing drive Juan Fangio, but the majority of the set is concerned with record breaking vehicles, planes and ships. For instance the U.S.S. Forrestal which was the largest warship in the world, the Railton Special which set the land speed record in 1947, a Fairey Delta 2 plane, a Sikorsky XH-39 helicopter, the L.N.E.R Mallard, the S.S. United States liner which won the Blue Riband in 1952, Bluebird the water speed record setting hydroplane piloted by Donald Campbell and the F-100 Super Sabre jet fighter. There are also some unusual inclusions such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was the largest steel arch bridge, Mount Rushmore Memorial in the U.S.A (the largest sculptures in the world), the Empire State Building (then the tallest in the world), ‘Mike’ the monkey who survived a trip into space, a model plane and American rocket Martian Viking. With plenty of information on the reverse this is an interesting little set. Size 64 x 34mm

Ogdens Reprinted Series Trick Billiards 1934 (CCS reprint 2001) Trick Billiards 1934 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - Originally issued in 1934, these reprints, feature trick shots performed by A. Newman-Mond who was an expert at performing these. Indeed there is a British Pathe clip online from 1940 showing him in action. The cards feature the green baize of the table with diagrams showing how to hit the balls to achieve the shot required and the numbered backs give full details of how to achieve this. I particularly like the ‘Potting a ball with a penny’ trick which uses a penny resting against a cushion as a cue-ball and we are told that you just had to tap the coin with the cue and the penny would roll in an arc and knock in the ball at the other end of the table. Mr Newman-Mond assures us that “with a little practice this trick can be done almost every time”. Somehow I doubt that, but it does make you want to have a go. Size 68 x 36mm.

Gallaher Sports Miscellaneous Sporting Personalities 1936 Sporting Personalities 1936 48 - Plenty of sporting fixtures take place in a year and this was no doubt true in 1936 when Gallahers issued, with their “De-Luxe” cigarettes, a series of 48 Sporting Personalities. Many of the names will still be remembered today, such was their brilliance – Alex James, Dixie Dean, Clifford Bastin, Len Harvey, Kid Berg, Gordon Richards, Steve Donoghue, Frank Wooley, Jack Hobbs and Patsy Hendren – just a few of the stars in this sporting hall of fame. Other colourful characters include Bertram Mills of circus fame who put up £10,000 for the capture of the Loch Ness monster, Malcolm Campbell, Tom Webster who was a famous cartoonist popular for his sports cartoons in the Daily Mail and Lord Clydesdale who was the first person to fly over Mount Everest. The excellent colour portraits are pictured against an appropriate background and there is plenty of information on the numbered backs. A must for any collection and size 63 x 37mm.

Dickson Orde Sports Miscellaneous Sports of the Countries 1962 Sports of the Countries 1962 25 - This is an interesting set of colour pictures of a sport with national flag in the corner and plenty of text on the back. Despite our failure to win most competitions football is given as England’s national sport and we are told that “the average Englishman takes an interest in at least one of the numerous sports practised, but it would be fair to said that soccer is the most popular”. Other sporting associations include bull-fighting and Spain, ice hockey and Canada, cricket and Australia, polo with India, baseball and America, Pakistan with hockey, China and table tennis etc., but there are some you might not instantly recognise as representing the country such as water polo with Hungary, basketball with Brazil, cycle racing with Italy, golf with South Africa, motor racing with France or fighting fish with Thailand (referred to as Siam on the card) and as Hawaii is part of the USA is it not cheating to include the island and surfing as America is already included? The cards are size 65 x 36mm.

Mitchell Horse Racing and the Turf Old Sporting Prints 1930 Old Sporting Prints 1930 25 - This set takes us back to the 18th and 19th centuries with a series of contemporary paintings and lithographs illustrating sports of the period – and some fascinating facts like when the third stump was added in cricket. We see bloody spots such as cockfighting and bare-knuckle boxing, horse-racing including the Grand National and the Derby, hunting, shooting and fishing. Surprising inclusions are two cards of mail coaches – the Edinburgh Express and the Brighton Day Mail which are hardly sporting topics. Packed with interest, this is a set to savour.

Morris Dogs and Pets Racing Greyhounds 1939 Racing Greyhounds 1939 25 - We think this set was issued just before the Second World War broke out because the last reference in the text is to the withdrawal of one of the runners from the 1939 Greyhound Derby which had taken place in June that year. Greyhound racing in the 1920s and ‘30s had a huge following and that is reflected in the number of sets issued by manufacturers at the time, but this set was produced by the London firm of B. Morris under the brand title “Forecasta”. The cards picture top-class greyhounds born from 1935 to 1937, whilst the informative texts give their pedigree, owner, trainer, track and prize record etc. Greyhound racing was clearly a serious business if the amount of money involved is any example. For example, Ballyhennessy Sandhills on card 2 won more than £4,800 in just three races, which was a fortune in those days. Alas there is no longer dog-racing at White City and most of the other tracks around the country have also gone, but these fine animals will bring back memories for many. Cards size 64 x 38mm.

Players Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Cycling 1939 Cycling 1939 50 - Issued in 1939 with the assistance of the editor of “Cycling” magazine, the sequence begins with the Hobby-Horse, the bicycle’s pedal-free forerunner propelled by feet on the ground, through to modern in-door races on light-weight machines. Each technical advance is chronicled along the way, matched by superb illustrations which not only show how bicycles (and tricycles and tandems) have progressed over the years but also how fashions have changed. I cannot recommend this series more highly it is a credit to those who compiled it and it should be in your collection. Size 68 x 36mm

Ardath Sports Miscellaneous Sports Champions 1935 Sports Champions 1935 50 - 43 men and 7 women, many are still legends today. The collection of Sports Champions distributed with Ardath’s State Express cigarettes in 1935 reads like a Who’s Who of top sporting personalities of the 1930s, among them Don Bradman, Alex James, Henry Cotton, Gordon Richards, Helen Jacobs, Len Harvey, Joe Davis and Fred Perry. Also featured is Tom Green, the record-breaking walker who won Olympic gold in 1932 at the age of 46 and Ted Phelps the rower who won the historic Doggett’s Coat and Badge race in 1930, bringing to eight the victories for the Phelps family and talking of eight, what about Glasgow Celtic’s centre-forward J. McGrory? He scored eight goals against Dunfermline in one match, just one of the fascinating facts to be found on the card backs. Size 68 x 36mm

Phillips Sports Miscellaneous Sportsmen Spot the Winner inverted back issue 1937 Sportsmen Spot the Winner inverted back issue 1937 50 - Godfrey Phillips 50 Sportsmen Spot the Winner issued in 1937, is an unusual take on a familiar subject. The fronts contain head and shoulder pictures of famous sportsmen of the period, but the inverted text backs rather than having information about the sportsman have five horses who have all been assigned a different colour. The finish line is depicted as a target and we are informed that after you have chosen your horse you can moisten the winning post and the winning horse will be revealed. Obviously this is not something we would recommend doing! Included in this set are champion jockeys G. Richardson and Steve Donoghue, footballers Alex James and W. R (Dixie) Dean, boxers Len Harvey and Tommy Farr, Australian speedway rider Vic Huxley, well-known cricketers W. Hammond and H. Verity and legendary tennis champion Fred Perry. This set was produced in two printings this is the inverted back issue. Size 68 x 36mm.
