Hill Ships & Shipping Famous Ships Front matt 1939 Famous Ships Front matt 1939 50 - When these cards appeared in 1940 we described them as “a fine series produced in colour and full of interest at the present time. Fighting ships are well represented by such vessels as the Hood and the new aircraft carrier Illustrious. Commercial craft include crack liners such as the Queen Elizabeth and the now notorious Bremen. There are historic ships such as the Mayflower and the Victory, and vessels, which took part in the 1914-18 conflict. Altogether a valuable contribution to maritime history”. Also here is the ill-fated Lusitania and the Titanic. The Hood would join them in the ocean depths when she was sunk in 1942. The Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary were to end their days in Hong Kong and California. The Cutty Sark at Greenwich and the Victory at Portsmouth are reminders of Britain’s maritime heritage, as indeed is this fine set of cards. This set was also issued with a varnished front. Size 63 x 38mm

Sarony Ships & Shipping Ships of all Ages 1929 Ships of all Ages 1929 M50 - Issued in 1929 this lovely and colourful set begins in prehistoric times with a dug-out canoe, bringing us forward in time via the Romans and Vikings, Christopher Colubus, the “Mayflower”, the clipper “Thermopylae”, the Nore Lightship, an oil tanker, lifeboat, “Mauretania” etc., right through to the new German liner “Bremen”, the descriptive back of which includes the warning that she “is the most striking maritime sign of industrious Germany’s recovery…and is a challenge to the world at large and English designers and builders in particular”. With well-executed pictures and informative text on the back this is an ideal addition to any collection. Cards size 64 x 37mm. This was also issued in a standard size (64 x 37mm).

Players Ships & Shipping Shipping (Unissued) c1960 Shipping (Unissued) c1960 50 - The illustrations in this set were reproduced from paintings by Richard Ward a well-known marine artist and include liners, cargo ships and ferries from shipping lines around the world like the ‘Arcadia’, ‘Bergensfjord’, ‘Brazil’, ‘City of Colombo’, ‘Empress of England’, ‘Federico C’, ‘Gripsholm’, the ‘Manxman’ which ferries passengers from the Isle of Man to Liverpool etc., tanker ‘Methane Pioneer’, Russian liner ‘Mikhail Kalinin’, ‘Olympia’, ‘Orsova’, ‘Pendennis Castle’, ‘Prinsesse Margrethe’, Cunard liner the ‘Queen Elizabeth’, ‘Queensland Star’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Savannah’ the world’s first nuclear-powered merchant ship, ‘Statendam’ etc. The numbered backs contain plenty of information about the vessels such as the fact that the ’Fort York’ was designed to carry cargo on the St. Lawrence Seaway, but can be converted to an ocean going vessel if needed or that ‘Southern Cross’ made four round-the-world trips a year. Although prepared around 1960 for one reason or another these were never issued with cigarettes. The fine pictures and interesting text on the numbered backs make this an excellent set for any collection with cards size 66 x 36mm.

Wills (Overseas) Ships & Shipping Lighthouses 1926 Lighthouses 1926 50 - These were originally issued overseas with Wills’ ‘Three Castles’ brand and take a look at lighthouses around the British Isles. Some are well-known like those at Dungeness, Spurn Head, Bishop Rock on the Isles of Scilly, Flamborough Head near Scarborough, Smeaton Tower or Eddystone Lighthouse in Plymouth or Corbiere Lighthouse on Jersey, but no matter where they are they have all at some time or another been built to prevent shipping from disaster. When this set was produced many of these structures were still manned and in use and you have to admire the courage of the lighthouse keepers in their lonely structures buffeted by wind and sea. The lighthouses are pictured in colour on the front and the backs give the history, details of the range of its light and fog warning system. This set was also produced by British American Tobacco and was reprinted in 2000. A fascinating set with cards size 67 x 35mm.
