Rockwell Ships & Shipping Cunard in the 1950s 2003 Cunard in the 1950s 2003 10 - The 1950s were golden years for Cunard. With wartime austerity fading there was a boom in travel on transatlantic services dominated by the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, plus a big expansion in cruise holidays. The two queens are shown in excellent colour artwork along with Carinthia III, Mouretania II, Sylvania II and so on, plus the Media, built by John Brown on Clydebank, which was Cunard’s first new post-war ship and was unusual for being first-class only on the Atlantic run. Descriptive backs. Size 67 x 37mm (this series was also issued in a larger size).

Whitbread Ships & Shipping Inn Signs, Maritime 1974 Inn Signs, Maritime 1974 M25 - The brewers Whitbread & Co. began issuing their reproductions of Inn Signs in 1951, the last being the 1974 Maritime Series, our Set of the Month for October. Unlike their other series where the card could be collected only at the public house where the sign was depicted – taking a degree of dedication for even hardened drinkers – the Maritime Series cards could be collected in any one of the 700 Whitbread pubs. As Whitbread said at the time “The sea had always been an important part of our heritage and we honour this tradition with a fine set of maritime inn signs befitting an island race”. Among the subjects are “Nelson”, “Shiny Sheff” (HMS Sheffield, now moored on the Thames),“Sir Francis Chichester” (on Plymouth’s Barbican where the round-the-world sailor landed in 1967 and “Gypsy Moth” the name of Chichester’s boat, “the Britannia” (now decommissioned and open to the public at Leaith) with the name spelt incorrectly as Brittania in the text

Reddings Tea Ships & Shipping Ships of the World 1963 Ships of the World 1963 48 - This set contains colour pictures of vessels from the 1950s and ‘60s, but by far the best thing about these is the detailed text on the reverse from which you can learn not just the owners, specifications and type of cargo, but also the name of the captain. For instance the card for the “Canberra”, which was later used as a troop ship in the Falklands War, was captained by Commodore G.A. Wild, carried 2,1888 passengers in luxury and had a crew of 960. Other liners include R.M.S. “Windsor Castle”, S.S. “Rotterdam”, R.M.S. “Queen Elizabeth”, S.S. “Bremen”, R.M.S. “Rangitane”, S.S. “United States”, S.S. “Oriana” and S.S. “Southern Cross. It is not just passenger liners that are covered as there are fishing trawlers including the “Mary Craig”, cable ship C.S. “Retriever”, M.V. “Vasilios R” a tramp ship designed to navigate the St. Lawrence Seaway, tankers including Shell’s S.S. “Serenia”, a Trinity House pilot ship, a British Railways train ferry which operated between Harwich and Zeebrugge, coal ship M.V. “Corsea”, cargo vessels including a refrigerated fruit carrier owed by Fyffes and a River Thames clay transporter. There is no card number 13 in this set instead there is a card numbered 12A. In her review in our magazine in 1963 Dorothy Bagnall wondered if it could be that the compiler was superstitious, but who knows! This is a very fine set with cards size 68 x 38mm.

Cleary's Australia Flags, Arms & Maps Flags and Funnels of Australian Registered Shipping Companies 1st Series 2014 Flags and Funnels of Australian Registered Shipping Companies 1st Series 2014 50 - These coloured cards are reminiscent of Ogdens’ Flags and Funnels of Leading Steamship Lines 1906, but these feature the flags and funnels of Australian registered shipping companies. The numbered backs contain a wealth of information about the companies such as the fact that the O’May Brothers began with rowing passengers from Kangaroo Point to Derwent before getting their first steamer in 1870 or that the shallow draft ships of the North Coast Steamship Company, formed in 1891, proved invaluable in World War II, but three were lost in the conflict.
