Players Flags, Arms & Maps Countries Arms and Flags 1905 (CCS reprint 2001) Countries Arms and Flags 1905 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - This charming set is also a bit of a history lesson as it includes many changes. There are countries who no longer exist or who now have different names and flags. For instance we see the elephant flag of Siam (now Thailand), Prussia, Hesse, Bavaria, Saxony etc. are now part of Germany, also the German flag of white with a black cross and eagle is today black, red and gold, Persia is now Iran, China’s red flag with a dragon now has yellow stars, Argentina’s 1905 flag had dark blue and white lines (today light blue lines with yellow sun), the Irish flag was a Union Jack with a harp and Russia ad a blue saltire on a white background (which after the red flag of the Soviet Union era is now white, blue and red). We are also used to Corea being spelt with a K and would normally refer to Tunisia not Tunis, but some of the biggest changes are to former British colonies such as New South Wales which had its own flag in 1905, but is now part of Australia, India which is shown as a British flag with emblem (now orange, white & green flag with wheel) and Canada which in this set has a Union Jack with arms in the centre, but now of course features a red maple leaf. The numbered backs contain further information and the cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Wills Dogs and Pets Dogs 1937 (CCS reprint 2001) Dogs 1937 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - This is a reprint of the 1937 set which reproduced realistic dog portraits by famous British wildlife painter Arthur Wardle, all set against pale pastel backgrounds and backed by informative text. If you love dogs you won’t be able to resist these as the characters of the canines really shine through, especially the card for the Bassett Hound. Amongst the other breeds featured are the Alsatian, Bulldog, Dachshund, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Poodle, Pug and Golden Retriever. The adhesive backs tell the history of the breed and what characteristics to look out for instance the Old English Sheepdog should have a dense shaggy coat which is almost blue with white markings. The original series was issued with an adhesive back. It was also issued as an Channel Islands issue with an adhesive back and an Irish set with out an adhesive back. These are little works of art with cards size 68 x 36mm

Lambert & Butler Aviation & Space Empire Air Routes 1936 (CCS reprint 2000) Empire Air Routes 1936 (CCS reprint 2000) 50 - Described as “colour depictions of the distinctive markings of fifty countries illustrated on the plane in correct colours. Very well produced and the first of its kind, making it very desirable to the aviation enthusiast” in our card magazine in April 1937 this was not quite correct as only forty-four countries are represented as some such as the U.S.A and Britain having two or more illustrations. The importance of being able to identify an aircraft’s nationality was particularly important during times of war. For instance in WWI the R.A.F’s roundel had to be adopted in preference to the Union Jack following confusion with the German Iron Cross in poor visibility and even in today’s hi-tech world cases of mistaken identify can cost lives. It may be that the Ministry of Information had a hand in getting this set produced as swift recognition of friend or foe would be essential in the run up to World War II. Anyway, this set clearly displays the wing and rudder markings of aircraft of countries arranged alphabetically from Argentina to Yugoslavia. The texts give useful background information. For instance of the Spanish Air Force we learn that “after the fall of the monarchy in 1931 the central circle of the wing marking and the bottom band of the rudder marking were changed from purple to red., but since the outbreak of the 1936 revolution two opposing air forces have been brought into being, the markings of which undoubtedly vary.”. Card size 68 x 36mm. This is the reprint set issued in 2000 originally issued in 1936

Wills Reprinted Series First Aid 1915 (CCS reprint 1999) First Aid 1915 (CCS reprint 1999) 50 - Originally issued in 1913 this printing has the album clause at the side of the text published in 1915.and this is a reprint of 1999. The original set would have been an important set as many could not afford to visit a doctor and there were more opportunities for injuries due to the war. There are comprehensive instructions on how to bandage virtually every part of the body, how to deal with fractures, perform artificial respiration, carry an injured person, remove foreign bodies and even put out a woman on fire! This last one was particularly important at the time as the combination of long skirts and open fires must have meant this was always a risk. There is plenty of helpful information on the reverse, although it is very much of the keep calm and carry on variety. For instance the treatment for skin peppered by shot says the pain is acute for a minute, but so long as they go to bed, have wet towels place on the area and the joints don’t swell there is no need to call a doctor! An interesting look at vintage healthcare. Size 68 x 36mm.

Players Reprinted Series History of Navel Dress 1930 (CCS reprint 2001) History of Navel Dress 1930 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - This colourful set, as the title suggests, features sailors apparel from a 10th century Saxon Buscarle right up to a Chief Engineer of 1879. Included is a seaman’s arctic kit from 1602 recorded as being worn while searching for the North West Passage, the wide canvas breeches of the seaman of 1690, the full skirted coat of an Admiral of 1748, the costume of a gunner of 1750 taken from an inventory of effects, a ship’s caulker of 1790 who unusually wears trousers and a ship’s cook with a wooden leg. The informative text on the reverse tells us that the navy were encouraged to recruit cooks from those who had been maimed. The card for the Seaman of 1805 shows him wearing striped blue trousers and sporting a pigtail which we are told was popular between 1785 and 1823. By 1854 during the war in the Crimea we are told seamen of the Naval Brigade usually wore a Scottish style cap such as a Glengarry or Kilmarnock. A colourful set backed by interesting information. Size 68 x 36mm.

Ogdens Reprinted Series Trick Billiards 1934 (CCS reprint 2001) Trick Billiards 1934 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - These reprints, feature trick shots performed by A. Newman-Mond who was an expert at performing these. Indeed there is a British Pathe clip online from 1940 showing him in action. The cards feature the green baize of the table with diagrams showing how to hit the balls to achieve the shot required and the numbered backs give full details of how to achieve this. I particularly like the ‘Potting a ball with a penny’ trick which uses a penny resting against a cushion as a cue-ball and we are told that you just had to tap the coin with the cue and the penny would roll in an arc and knock in the ball at the other end of the table. Mr Newman-Mond assures us that “with a little practice this trick can be done almost every time”. Somehow I doubt that, but it does make you want to have a go. Size 68 x 36mm.
