Players Reprinted Series Gilbert and Sullivan 2nd Series 1927 (reprint 1990) Gilbert and Sullivan 2nd Series 1927 (reprint 1990) 50 - The partnership of dramatist W. S Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan led to 14 comic operas, most of which are still performed to this day and this set pictures colourful drawings of some of the characters from these productions. Included are The Duchess of Plaza-Toro and Marco & Giuseppe Palmieri from The Gondoliers, Florian, Melissa and King Hildebrand from Princess Ida, The Fairy Celia and Earl Tolloller from Iolanthe, Nanki-Poo and Yum Yum from the Mikado, Jack Deadeye and Hebe from HMS Pinafore, Mabel and Major General Stanley from The Pirates of Penzance, Mad Margaret and Robin Oakapple from Ruddigore, Alexis and Dr. Daly from the Scorcerer, the Plaintiff and Judge from Trial by Jury, Jack Point and Leonard Meryll from The Yeoman of the Guard etc. The numbered backs contain plenty of information concerning the character and their role in the opera. This is a reprint of the original set which was issued in 1927. A must have set for any Gilbert & Sullivan fans with cards size 68 x 36mm.

British American Tobacco (without firms name) Reprinted Series Indian Regiments 1912 (reprint 2001) Indian Regiments 1912 (reprint 2001) 50 - These are reprints of a set originally produced in 1912 in the days before Indian independence when the country was still under British rule. That said these are nice cards picturing in colour native soldiers from different Indian regiments including a Sowar or trooper of the ‘18th King George’s Own Lancers, a Subadar of the 5th Gurkha Riffles, a Sepoy of the 26th Punjabis, a Naick or Corporal of the 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, a Gunner of the 21st Mountain Battery, a Jemadar of the Governor’s Body Guard in Madras, a Gun Elephant & Mahout of the Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery, Major-General His Highness Maharaja Sir Pratap Singh and a Sowar of the Bikanir Camel Corps. The numbered backs just give the title of the subject and it would have been nice to have more information, but the pictures more than make up for this and it is amazing how many different styles and colours of uniforms there were. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

British American Tobacco (without firms name) Reprinted Series Lighthouses 1926 (reprint 2000) Lighthouses 1926 (reprint 2000) 50 - These cards take a look at lighthouses around the British Isles. Some are well-known like those at Dungeness, Spurn Head, Bishop Rock on the Isles of Scilly, Flamborough Head near Scarborough, Smeaton Tower or Eddystone Lighthouse in Plymouth or Corbiere Lighthouse on Jersey, but no matter where they are they have all at some time or another been built to prevent shipping from disaster. When this set was produced many of these structures were still manned and in use and you have to admire the courage of the lighthouse keepers in their lonely structures buffeted by wind and sea. The lighthouses are pictured in colour on the front and the backs give the history, details of the range of its light and fog warning system. This set was also produced by British American Tobacco and by Wills with their ‘Three Castles’ overseas brand. A fascinating set with cards size 67 x 35mm.

Players Reprinted Series Regimental Standards and Cap Badges 1930 (reprint 1993 and 1997) Regimental Standards and Cap Badges 1930 (reprint 1993 and 1997) 50 - This set originally produced in 1930, was initially reprinted in 1993, and as stated on the card backs these were reprinted in 1997 for the Card Collectors Society. These attractive cards feature the regimental colours and cap badges of British regiments and are backed with comprehensive text on the reverse. Included are the Durham Light Infantry who had 37 battalions during the Great War and who’s cap badge is a bugle, the Gordon Highlanders nicknamed the “Gay Gordons” who march to the air of ‘Highland Laddie’ and the Leicestershire regiment who have a tiger on their badge honouring their service in India. Sadly many of these units are no more as they have merged in subsequent cost-cutting measures. Card size 68 x 36mm.
