All Inc Pop Stars & Singers Musicians (Caricatures by Bob Hoare) 2003 Musicians (Caricatures by Bob Hoare) 2003 L20 - Bob Hoare again demonstrates his artistic talents in this set of colourful caricatures. Although the set is titled musicians and includes the likes of Ray Charles on piano, Louis Armstrong on trumpet and Bruce Springsteen on guitar it also includes singers such as Will Young, Madonna and Michael Jackson. Perhaps Bob Hoare is showing a personal preference as there are two different Elvis cards in this set and the Rolling Stones are shown in a band picture as well as individual appearances by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. There is a minor error on the backs of cards 15 and 16 which are listed as part of a set of 23 (15-23 etc.) rather than a set of 20. Size 78 x 63mm.

Other sections are devoted to make up, merchandise, collectibles etc. Size 89 x 64mm.

Panini (USA) Pop Stars & Singers NSYNC 1999 (Nos. 34 and 100 blurred as issued) NSYNC 1999 (Nos. 34 and 100 blurred as issued) EL108 - In postcard size (150 x 100mm) these are colour photos of American pop group NSYNC, a teen-idol band formed by Justine Timberlake in 1995, allegedly getting their name after Timberlake’s mother commented how “in sync” their voices were – whilst others say it’s made up of the last letter of each of their names. The Panini set is devoid of text except for the customary copyright, etc., lineage from 1999, but I understand their breakthrough success came a year later when the album “No Strings Attached” sold almost ten million copies. (Note numbers 34 and 100 are out of focus as issued).

Brindley Pop Stars & Singers Opera Stars 1988 Opera Stars 1988 30 - This is a rather nice set on a subject that doesn’t appear much on cards. The opera stars are depicted in black and white ovals set within a salmon/pink background and include Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) who was the first tenor to have his voice on a record, Greek soprano singer Maria Callas, more modern favourites Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, Ezio Pinza famous for his role in Don Giovanni, but he also sang in the musical South Pacific, Edna Thornton an English contralto famous for her roles in Wagnerian operas, Amelita Galli-Curci who became a major recording star, Australian soprano Dame Nellie Melba and Paul Robeson who played Otello but is best known for his rendition of “Ol’ Man River” in the musical Show Boat. The green backs contain white text advertising Brindley and Orpheus Records and give details of the star and their musical ability and best roles. Cards size 70 x 38mm.

Comic Images (USA) Pop Stars & Singers The Beatles Yellow Submarine 1999 The Beatles Yellow Submarine 1999 LT72 - The 1966 hit “Yellow Submarine” was the basis for an animated movie by King Features, makers of a weekly Saturday morning U.S. TV cartoon series called “The Beatles”, who used the same formula showing the band in various adventures backed by their musical soundtrack, although the voices were all provided by actors. The result was a classic, released in 1968 to considerable acclaim, its vivid psychedelic imagery and music attracting a wide range of audiences. This set shows stills from the film, but the main interest is in the hugely informative text backs. Size 89 x 64mm.

J.F.Sporting Collectibles Pop Stars & Singers Top Pop Groups of the 60s 1st Series 2016 Top Pop Groups of the 60s 1st Series 2016 LT24 - This set is sure to bring back memories for many, as it features colour pictures of many of the big names in the music world of the 1960s including The Beatles, The Small Faces, The Kinks, Herman’s Hermits, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Shadows, Manfred Mann, The Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Beach Boys, The Seekers and Gerry and the Pacemakers. I was also surprised to find the Bee Gees included, but apparently they were formed in 1958 and enjoying success in the late 1960s. Interestingly they are pictured with their two bandmates, but only the three Gibb brothers are credited on the back. There is a useful text on the numbered card backs and these are size 91 x 65mm.

Goodies Pop Stars & Singers The Monkees 1st Series 1967 The Monkees 1st Series 1967 25 - The Monkees were an American boyband formed in the 1960s for a TV series of the same name which aired between 1966 and 1968. The band were made up of Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork and British actor and singer Davy Jones and the show followed their comic adventures as they tried to get famous. They produced a number of records in real life including “Last Train to Clarksville”, Daydream Believer” and “I’m a Believer” and were one of the most successful bands of the late 1960s. This set contains black and white pictures of them in action as well as close ups, many of which have copies of their signatures. The numbered backs suggest you could “find out more about Mickey, Peter, Mike and David by sending a stamped addressed envelope to Official Monkees Club (GB & Eire)” in Birmingham. A 2nd Series of these was later issued in1968. A lovely set sure to bring back memories with cards size 66 x 35mm.

A & B C Pop Stars & Singers The Monkees Black and White (54 different cards from the set of 55 minus No. 16) 1967 The Monkees Black and White (54 different cards from the set of 55 minus No. 16) 1967 L54 out of 55 - This part set (missing No. 16) contains black and white photos of the popular 1960s band. Their success with such hits as “Daydream Believer”, “Last Trains to Clarksville” and “I’m a Believer” is ironic as they began as actors in a TV series about an imaginary band who wanted to be as popular as the Beatles but never succeeded. The show aired between 1966 and 1968 and although initially they were kept too busy to visit the recording studio they did begin putting out records particularly after the show was cancelled. They cards picture American trio Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork together with British actor/singer Davy Jones in a variety of poses, often clowning around, and some have facsimile autographs on the front. The backs make up into a colour picture of the band. Cards size 81 x 56
