Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Gran Pop by Lawson Wood 1934 Gran Pop by Lawson Wood 1934 L50 - Produced by Carreras in 1934 it is a series of 50 cards featuring ‘Gran-Pop’, a cartoon ape, in humorous colour drawings by the English painter and illustrator Lawson Wood. As well as appearing on cards the ‘Gran-Pop’ character also appeared in a series of annuals that were sold round the world. Lawson Wood was very much concerned with animal welfare and as well as being a member of the Royal Zoological Society he also founded a sanctuary for old animals, but the apes and other animals in his drawings find themselves in very human situations with suitably humorous captions. The card backs contain sepia photos and text showing the manufacture of cigarettes including an illustration of the Arcadia Works of Carreras Ltd in Hampstead Road, London where we are told “happy, healthy workpeople make good cigarettes with care, pride and conscience under the most hygienic manufacturing conditions”. Size 80 x 63mm. This was also produced in a smaller format size 70 x 41mm.

Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards In Town Tonight 1938 In Town Tonight 1938 50 - In the 1930,s the Saturday evening radio show was ‘In Town Tonight’ which began with the cry of a Piccadilly flower seller in the background as “we stop the roar of London’s traffic.” The recording was the voice of Mrs Emma Baker whose picture appears on card no. 2 in Churchman’s 1938 series of fifty, which takes its title from the programme. The basis of the show, and the cards, was to meet people from all walks of life who happened to be in London that night. So on these cards we meet the likes of Cyclone Danny Carter, the international stunt rider; John Tussaud, Madame Tussaud’s great grandson; Christina Foyle of booksellers fame; Dante, the master magician; Prince Monolulu, the racing tipster; Captain Slocum, British Airways pilot; and engine-driver William Hagland who apparently used the cigarette card of himself to prove his identity when appearing as a witness in court. Size 68 x 36mm

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Malayan Industries 1929 Malayan Industries 1929 27 - Carreras had already produced a set in 1928 titled Malayan Scenes (see website for availability), but clearly their fascination with the Malaya was not at an end as in 1929 they issued another set, but this time looking at industries in the region. These interesting black and white photos, backed by plenty of facts, show such things as tapping a rubber tree, sterilising the fruit of oil palms, a banana plant, a coconut estate, pineapple cultivation, transporting pipes using elephants, creping machinery on a rubber estate, betel nut palms, kapok trees which were ideal as they were quick growing and provided fibre for stuffing mattresses etc. and oil for soap, drying rattans to make canes, the transportation of coconut by oxen and boat, milling sugar cane and irrigation for rice planting. In those days most of the processes were hands-on and it is fascinating to see the use of animals and natives at work. Card no. 10 pictures the unusual hats worn by Chinese women labourers in the oil palm industry and we are told that these fringed hats denote their married state. Even by 1929 many of these processes were being mechanised and nowhere is the contrast between the old and the new more obvious than on card no. 9 which shows a bucket dredge at a tin mine, a major advance in mining, but in the foreground a man is crossing a rickety walkway carrying a load on his head. A real snapshot in time and size 69 x 36mm.

Sarony Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Saronicks 1929 Saronicks 1929 M50 - ‘Saronicks’ illustrating limericks quoted on the backs together with a statement that they are from the “Complete Limerick Book”. The same series of cards was also produced by Major Drapkin under the title ‘Limericks’. Sarony’s ‘Saronicks’ came in two sizes, standard and medium (This one being the medium size) enjoy the comic situations portrayed by the artist in black and red on a white background, not always politically correct for today’s climate, the Jews at the bus stop in Kew, the colonial bellowing at his Indian servant, etc, but they all raise a smile, and the style is definitely 1920s. Notaras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Views of China 1925 Views of China 1925 24 - Today’s visitors will have no difficulty recognising some of the country’s famous historic sights such as the Great Wall or Peking’s (Beijing) Forbidden City as these are still very much on the tourist trail, but the street and river scenes belong to another age without a skyscraper anywhere and the policeman on point duty in Shanghai looks as if he’s having a quiet time. The backs advertise ‘Silver Car Cigarettes’, but contain no information on the scenes pictured so we only have the caption for explanation. A fascinating glimpse into old China with cards size 69 x 45mm

Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Wings Over the Empire 1939 Wings Over the Empire 1939 M48 - It was rather unfortunate timing for Churchman’s to issue a series called Wings Over the Empire in July 1939, when Britain was on the brink of war and the only wings which the empire would see over them for several years were those belonging to German and Japanese aircraft. That having been said this is an excellent series of colour pictures including many breathtakingly beautiful views. The first twenty cover the British Isles working out from London to the west of Ireland before flying past Gibraltar and Malta to India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Burma, followed by Southern and Central Africa, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The fascinating text include some nice little touches like New Zealand is “the pocket edition of the world” or the text for the picture of Sydney cricket ground which reads “cricket is essentially an English sport”! The set also refers to Bombay (now Mumbai) as the “Manchester of India” and says that Blackpool “possesses all the essentials of a health resort”? The inclusion of Mount Everest stretches things a little because the peak was not actually within the Empire, nor indeed was Eire (of which Dublin and Killarney are pictured). These aerial views take us on a tour of a world that was soon to change forever at a time when faraway places were still exotic and the sun never set on the Empire. These cards are size 68 x 53mm.

Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards World Wonders Old and New Unissued c1955 World Wonders Old and New Unissued c1955 50 - This set features some remarkable subjects, some of which are not covered elsewhere on cards. These were never actually issued, but the text was prepared around 1953 as the latest date quoted in the texts was November 1952 for the explosion of the first hydrogen bomb. The colourful cards include natural marvels such as the Victoria and Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon and Mount Everest, phenomena such as tidal waves, water spouts, geysers, Krakatoa and the Aurora Australis, man-made wonders like the Pyramids, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Colosseum, Stonehenge and Great Wall of China as well as twentieth century engineering feats such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Empire State Building, Panama Canal and liner the Queen Elizabeth. Most interesting of all are ten modern developments which had particular significance in the decade leading up to 1952, especially the war years. Fascinating stuff. Card size 66 x 36mm.

Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Well Known Ties 2nd Series 1934 Well Known Ties 2nd Series 1934 L12 - These cards are very much of their time when class was everything and old school ties and the fact that you could recognize them were a sign you belonged. That said, in addition to the Old Alleynians, Cliftonians, Etonians, Harrovians, Millhillians and Rugbeians, the set also includes a Blackheath Rugby Football Club tie & I Zingari cricket tie plus regimental ties of the Royal Marines, Household Brigade, Greenjackets and London Scottish. The fronts picture the tie, in colour, across one corner and a relevant black and white picture on the rest, so for instance the Royal Marines’ card pictures Gibraltar which was one of their great battle honours, whilst the London Scottish card shows them on ceremonial parade. As you would expect the cards featuring schools picture ties and relevant buildings associated with them and the sports cards show players in action. There is comprehensive text on the reverse and the cards are size 79 x 62mm. A 1st series in the same format was also produced.

Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Our Empire 1929 Our Empire 1929 L30 - You might imagine from the title this is a set of lovely views from places within the British empire, but you would be wrong. In fact these are photos of leaders, members of parliament etc. Beginning with King George V and his two sons the set then pictures Westminster, the Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald and other members of the Labour government including Margaret Bondfield the first woman to become a member of the Cabinet (that’s a good quiz question for you!) and the Rt. Hon. Wedgwood Benn as well as statesmen and leaders from New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Australia. There is plenty of informative text on the backs which gives a background to an interesting time when for the first time Britain had a Labour government. This set was issued in a standard size format (66 x 38mm) but this set is size 78 x 67mm.
