Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Beautiful Scotland 1939 Beautiful Scotland 1939 M48 - The cards were produced in 1939 and among the gems included are Stirling Castle, The Peaks of Glencoe, Oban, a snow-covered Ben Nevis, the quaint fishing village of Portree, Glen Moriston, a herd of Highland cattle, Farr Point in Sutherland and the world famous Staffa Island to the north of Iona. The stunning black and white views show a world without people or cars, but times were already changing as evidenced by the card for Loch Long, the back of which tells us of a new bridge being built to replace the ferry. Other companies who issued this set were Gallaher and Jackson. Size 77 x 52mm.

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Do You Know 1939 Do You Know 1939 50 - No fewer than seven out of the fifty cards in Do You Know? by Carreras were concerned with Army or Navy matters. Perhaps the compiler had a military background, or was it because the series was produced in 1939 just before war broke out? We will never know the answer to that one. Having said that, this is an extremely well-produced series with excellent illustrations and factual texts covering topics as diverse as the origin of bowler hats, sandwiches, ‘bobbies’, hallmarks, beefeaters, saluting, the sailor’s collar and horse-shoes for luck – plus some teasers like how much the value of the contents of the British Museum are insured for (answer : nothing), the history behind women wearing wedding rings (originally round the neck so she could be tethered as ‘property’) and how the length of a yard was determined (by Henry I, the distance from the point of his nose to the end of his thumb). Not a lot of people know that! Size 68 x 36mm

Mitchell Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Famous Crosses 1923 Famous Crosses 1923 25 - Ancient crosses in towns and villages around the British Isles bear witness to many historic events. In 1923, Stephen Mitchell & Son commissioned a series of twenty-five illustrations of Famous Crosses. As befits a Scottish firm, several of the subjects are from north of the border, including Edinburgh Cross, around which was summoned the Scottish Army before Flodden Field. Moving south to the English capital, e find a lovely evocative picture of Charing Cross in the dusk with lights shining from the windows of Charing Cross Station. High Cross, near Hinckley in Leicestershire, as the junction of the old Roman roads Watling Street and Fosse Way, is supposed to mark the exact centre of England while Banbury Cross of “ride a cock horse” nursery rhyme fame in the Horse Market is a replacement for the original destroyed by Puritans as a symbol of Popish faith. You might say Hereford is the double-cross City – it is blessed with two cards in this series, Blackfriars Cross and the White Cross, round which during the great plague reservoirs of vinegar were placed for the cleansing of money and other articles suspected of infection. Size 67 x 36mm

Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Sights of Britain 2nd Series (Smaller Caption) 1936 Sights of Britain 2nd Series (Smaller Caption) 1936 M48 - J.A. Pattreiouex Ltd of Manchester, the makers of Senior Service Cigarettes, were noted for specialising in photographic cards during the 1930s, including Sights of Britain 2nd Series. The 'sights' are both natural and man-made - the likes of Glencoe, Snowdon, Lake Windermere, Mullion Cove and the Wye Valley on the one hand, and Chester Cathedral, Eton College, Caernarvon Castle and Edinburgh's Princes Street on the other. We also see Cutty Sark and HMS Victory. All fine photos backed by highly informative texts, and, as I'm sure you will agree, all worthy choices, the kind of subjects you would expect. But there are also one or two surprises - the Manchester Ship Canal with factory chimneys smoking in the background, Southampton's King George graving dock and Croydon aerodrome's main passenger terminal designed to cope with 'ever-growing air traffic'. Wells, Glastonbury & Wookey are also pictured. Size 76 x 51mm

Marcovitch Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Beauties 1932 Beauties 1932 18 - We love these black and white pictures of beautiful women, but as they have no information on the reverse, not even the company’s name, we can’t tell you anything about them. All the cards are numbered on the left bottom corner and some of them may be different pictures of the same women. The majority are head and shoulders images and rather demure, but there are a few racier images (by 1930s standards). A nice set with cards size 66 x 35mm.

The beauties in swimsuits or skimpy dresses, include well-known film stars such as Carole Lombard, Joan Blondell and Dorothy Lamour who would soon achieve greater fame co-starring with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in the “Road” films. Quite racy in their day, I’m sure these pin-ups attracted more than a passing glance! Size 96 x 68mm

Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Eastern Proverbs 4th Series 1934 Eastern Proverbs 4th Series 1934 L12 - Churchman produced a number of sets of Eastern Proverbs and is their 4th Series of 12 large cards produced in 1934. The humorous colour artwork ilustrates proverbs from India, Arabia, China etc. such as “The house with two mistresses is unswept”, “The washerwoman knows the defects of the village” or “The woman who sells fans often shades her eyes with her hand”. The backs give further information on the saying and relate it to similar maxims from other parts of the world including Britain. For instance “It’s no use calling the tiger to chase away the dog” equates to our “out of the frying pan into the fire”. Many of the themes are universal although “The rain of tears is necessary for the harvest of learning” might be frowned upon these days referring as it does to the beating of children to encourage them to learn. The well known western equivalent of this proverb is “Spare the rod and spoil the child”. These detailed and entertaining cards are a worthy addition to any collection and are sure to raise a chuckle.Size 82 x 63mm

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Malayan Scenes 1928 Malayan Scenes 1928 M24 - When this set was issued Malaya was still under British control and the European influence can be seen in many of the pictures in this set. No where is this influence more obvious than Singapore, which although now a separate republic was then part of Malaya. There are pictures of the Victoria Memorial and Theatre, the Raffles Library and Museum, Government House, The King’s Dock and a lovely shot of the Cenotaph with rickshaws contrasting with the very British memorial and car. The back of this last card pays tribute to Malaya’s help in the First World War with both money and men. There are plenty of other black and white scenes including a Chinese circular gateway Penang, the imposing Malay College, the beautiful water tower at Teluck Anson, a surprisingly empty market place in Johore, the delightful Old Market Square in Kuala Lumpur, views of Malacca and the Government Buildings in Kuala Lumpar which are a lovely mix of Malay and European architecture. The pictures are backed by interesting information and the cards are size 70 x 61mm

Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Treasure Trove 1935 Treasure Trove 1935 L12 - The discovery of treasure always creates excitement, none more so than when it is the subject of mystery and legend, as when Howard Carter opened Tut-Ankh-Amen'stomb in 1922 - you may recall Lord Carnarvon, Carter's associate, died in mysterious circumstances in Egypt a few month's later, a victim of the Pharoah's curse, they say. Howard Carter is pictured opening the boy king's solid gold coffin on the first card in Churchman's series of 12 large size Treasure Trove cards, a fascinating series which illustrates and describes several historic finds including silver-ware buried at Pompeii ever since Vesuvius erupted in A.D.79, the Stoke Prior hoard discovered in a Herefordshire rabbit burrow by a man ferreting in 1891, the Iron Agebronzes recovered from the bed of the River Thames when Batterseaand Waterloo Bridges were being built, and Sir Mortimer Wheeler's discovery of Wonderful mosaics at Verulamium, the Roman city near St Albans. We also learn that in 1928 Mussolini ordered the draining of Lake Nemi near Naples so that two imperial Roman galleys belonging to the Emperor Tiberius - floating palaces complete with marble baths and swimming pools - could be reclaimed, whilst two of the cards are given over to the then greatest ever feat of maritime salvage, the recovery of tons of gold bullion from the wreck of the P & O liner 'Egypt' lying on the floor of the Atlantic after a collision in 1922. All are thrilling stories, with superb colour illustrations. Size 82 x 63mm

Anonymous Tobacco Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Careless Moments (Pin Up Girls) 1922 Careless Moments (Pin Up Girls) 1922 25 - This set of black and white pictures is titled “Careless Moments” on the reverse, but contains no further information. The idea of the set is that women are captured in an unguarded moment either getting dressed or taking a break from work with the result that most are in their underwear and lots of legs and stocking tops are on view. Unlike the explicit images available today these are tastefully done, but still titillating and if you are into stockings this is definitely the set for you! Cards size 70 x 38mm

The red printed backs show a building, presumably their headquarters, along with the company name in English and a trade mark. Players Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Dandies 1932 Dandies 1932 50 - Player's 1932 set of Dandies holds a special interest for collectors beyond the admirable pictures and texts, because it contains one of the most famous gaffs in cigarette card history. Christopher Clark R.I. was responsible for the artwork, and no doubt was careful to be historically accurate when portraying the characters. Unfortunately when it came to Disraeli (subject no.43) he painted Big Ben in the background. However, the text tells us 'Dizzy' was 22 at the time, so the date was 1826? and Big Ben wasn't built till thirty years later! The error was discovered after the first printing was released and an attempt to remove Big Ben in the second run left a ghostly blur. The third run has a plain background and this is what you will see in our set of the month. Elsewhere in the series we meet Narcissus, Julius Caesar, Richard II, Walter Raleigh, Samuel Pepys, George IV, Beau Brummell and Charles Dickens through to London's Pearly Kings and Queens and World Heavyweight boxing champion James. J. Corbett. Size 68 x 36mm

Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Eastern Proverbs 1st Series 1931 Eastern Proverbs 1st Series 1931 25 - This charming little set originally issued in 1931, features colourful illustrations of ancient proverbs from the East. The informative backs give us an idea of the meaning and also compares similar sayings from other countries including Britain. For instance the Indian proverb ‘Call on God, but row away from the rocks’ is compared to the Persian ‘Trust in Allah but spread not your prayer-carpet in a wet place and Cromwell’s ‘Trust in God but keep your powder dry’. The meaning of some is obvious just from the pictures and text on the front such as ‘Look at the mother before becoming engaged to the daughter’ however some are more obscure such as ‘Picking up a large stone is a sign it won’t be thrown’ or ‘Look the other way when the girl at the tea house smiles’. A lovely set size 68 x 36mm. The set was also reprinted in 2001,

International Tobacco Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Gentlemen! The King! (black back) 1937 Gentlemen! The King! (black back) 1937 100 - Although issued during coronation year 1937, this set was prepared in 1935 because “The King” referred to is George V and not his successor and indeed on the card backs we are told that “it can be inserted into a pictorial biography of H.M. King George V, particulars of which are enclosed in each packet”. It is unusual in being of two different sizes, with sixty standard size and forty large and it is on art paper rather than cardboard. The colour pictures take us from the King’s early childhood in 1866, through his public appearances and ends with his radio broadcast to the Empire broadcast in May 1935 as part of his Jubilee celebrations. Sadly he was to die just seven months later in January 1936. Rather prophetically the card featuring his second son the Duke of York, who at that time was not expected to be King, describes him as “the father of the young lady who may one day sit upon the throne of England” and of course she did. These cards were also issued with the text on the back in blue and provide a fascinating glimpse into the life of this hardworking monarch. The standard size cards are 67 x 39mm and the large cards are 76 x 58mm.
