Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Chinese Pottery and Porcelain Series 1 (4 different numbers fron the set of 5 minus number 5) c1915 (Canvas Issue) Chinese Pottery and Porcelain Series 1 (4 different numbers fron the set of 5 minus number 5) c1915 (Canvas Issue) EL4 out of 5 - Issued with the company’s ‘Spinet’ cigarettes these contain colour pictures (set against a dark brown background) of Chinese pottery and porcelain held institutions such as the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum etc. The images are printed on canvas with details of the object printed on the back. This is an extra-large part-set of 4 out of 5 (Minus No 5) and we have to say the larger format really show-cases the subjects admirably. The four in this part set are a jar from the late Yung Cheng (1723-35) period, a dragon vase from the Chia Ching (1522-66) dynasty, a Wan Li period vase (1573-1619) and a Tang Dynasty (618-906) statue of a Buddhist Apostle. The canvases are 133 x 110mm.

Ching Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Do You Know 1962 Do You Know 1962 25 - This interesting and colourful set covers the sort of questions that these days we can easily find the answer to online, but in the 1960s, when this was issued, would require a trip to the library such as how a Brazil nut grows, how a grasshopper sings, how a nettle stings, how fast an ostrich can travel or why a billiard cue is bevelled. Comprehensive explanations are given on the card backs. Our favourite has to be ‘Why a horse-shoe is used for luck’ as this has a local connection. Apparently these are considered lucky because legend says that St Dunstan, who was born just down the road, was noted for his skill in shoeing horses and he shoed the devil’s hoof, but this caused the devil so much pain he vowed never to enter a place where a horse-shoe was displayed – so now you know! This set was also produced by B.T. Ltd, Cromwell Stores, Ovaltine, S. Prior and Sweetule Products and was also part of a set of 50 produced by Liam Devlin & Sons – see website for availability. This set is size 68 x 36mm.

Amalgamated Tobacco Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Nature Series 1958 Nature Series 1958 25 - This series was originally issued in Mauritius for export only with ‘Mills’ cigarettes and contains colour pictures of creatures or plants. In a break from the normal rather than look at animals this shines the light on insects, amphibians, arachnids etc. For instance we see different varieties of Sea Slugs, the birth of frogs and newts, the world’s largest flower, jelly fish, a giant crab, a special birds nest, the use of colours as warnings in reptiles, corals, minute life in ponds and streams, the remarkable sight of driver ants attacking a snake, a sperm whale catching a squid, how water spiders use their diving bell, magnified water mites, star fish and the stages in the birth of a dragon fly. The blue text on the back gives plenty of explanation concerning each of these wonders making these educational as well as attractive cards. This was also issued by Sketchley Cleaners in 1960 and Sweetule Products in 1958 both of which are titled Nature Series. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Amalgamated Tobacco Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Holiday Resorts 1957 Holiday Resorts 1957 25 - Originally issued with the company’s ‘Mills Filtertips’ in Mauritus these cards contain charming colour pictures of various holiday destinations with ten cards devoted to places in Europe such as Portofino, Lugano, Salzburg, Monaco etc. and the remainder are views of England and Scotland, but surprisingly there no cards for Wales or Ireland. The backs contain plenty of information about the resort. For instance for Bavaria in Germany we are told that Bavarians have decorated their houses with religious murals for centuries and that Munich, the capital of the region, suffered heavy damage during the Second World War. This set was also produced by B.T Ltd and Risca Travel Agency in 1966. A lovely set with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Marston's Brewery Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Marston's Victorian Moments 1994 (selection from Wills Famous Inventions 1915) Marston's Victorian Moments 1994 (selection from Wills Famous Inventions 1915) 8 - The company of Marston’s was established in 1834 by J. Marston in Burton Upon Trent and today is a large business comprising six different breweries and numerous pubs. In 1994 they issued a set of 8 cards titled Marston’s Victorian Moments which reproduce pictures and text from the Wills set of Famous Inventions produced in 1915 and reprinted by Imperial Publishing in 1994. The cards featured are the Auto-Piano, Steam Hammer, Electric Light, Pratt’s Typewriter, Howe’s Sewing Machine, Five-Needle Telegraph Instrument, Wilde’s Dynamo and the Microscope. Why only these eight cards were chosen we don’t know, but with good pictures and informative text these are well worth adding to any collection. Size 68 x 36mm

Ching Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Jersey Past and Present 3rd Series 1961 Jersey Past and Present 3rd Series 1961 L24 - Issued with Ching & Co cigarettes this 3rd Series, like the 1st and 2nd Series, contains a mixture of reproductions of artwork of the island from around 100 years ago and photos taken in the early 1960s. The pictures are all in colour and places include St. Brelade’s Bay, Corbiere Lighthouse, Portelet Bay, Rozel Harbour, Bouley Bay etc. What is different about this set is that it contains a number of ships which either plied their trade between the island and England or came to grief on the treacherous rocks off the coast. The backs are full of interesting information, for instance we learn that the S.S. Stella sank of Casquets Reef with the loss of 100 lives including stewardess Mary Roberts who gave away her own life-belt in the last minutes or that Janvrin’s Tomb on a small island off of Portelet is named after the captain of a plague ship who died there and as buried there in sight of his home. An album was also issued to accompany this series. This is a lovely pictorial record of a beautiful island with cards size 76 x 64mm.

This set faithfully reproduces the colour pictures but the backs are printed in black instead of blue. Some things haven’t changed much, the text for the Palestine constable says of the Arabs and Jews “both denominations resort to violence in an effort to settle their age old quarrel”, whilst for Iraq we learn “the population is prone to violence”. Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Howlers 1936 Howlers 1936 L16 - It’s not hard to understand the popularity of Howlers. The schoolboy type of unconscious humour is a real classic. The colour illustrations are funny enough in themselves and the misunderstood definitions on the backs are highly entertaining. The artist Rene Bull had worked previously for Churchmans producing the successful Eastern Proverbs series issued between 1931 and 1934. The detail and characterisation in the Howlers pictures make this set a true classic. Size 82 x 63mm

Faulkner Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Optical Illusions 1935 (CCS reprint 2000) Optical Illusions 1935 (CCS reprint 2000) 25 - This is a fascinating series originally produced in 1935 and reprinted in 2000 pictures all sorts of illusions which indicate how easily our eyes are fooled. Take the simple picture on card no. 2 which show two different lines with inverted arrows and normal arrow tips on the ends. Looking at these pictures the line with the arrows looks shorter than the inverted arrows and yet, as the card explains, if measured you will see that they are in fact exactly the same length. A similar trick is played with a series of posts in a corridor which are the same height but appear to differ due to the perspective of the hall. The backs give information on why these illusions work. Cards size 68 x 36mm.
