Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Chinese Pottery and Porcelain Series 1 (4 different numbers fron the set of 5 minus number 5) c1915 (Canvas Issue) Chinese Pottery and Porcelain Series 1 (4 different numbers fron the set of 5 minus number 5) c1915 (Canvas Issue) EL4 out of 5 - Issued with the company’s ‘Spinet’ cigarettes these contain colour pictures (set against a dark brown background) of Chinese pottery and porcelain held institutions such as the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum etc. The images are printed on canvas with details of the object printed on the back. This is an extra-large part-set of 4 out of 5 (Minus No 5) and we have to say the larger format really show-cases the subjects admirably. The four in this part set are a jar from the late Yung Cheng (1723-35) period, a dragon vase from the Chia Ching (1522-66) dynasty, a Wan Li period vase (1573-1619) and a Tang Dynasty (618-906) statue of a Buddhist Apostle. The canvases are 133 x 110mm.

Faulkner Military - General Series Police Terms (with Faulkners on front) 1899 (reprint 1999) Police Terms (with Faulkners on front) 1899 (reprint 1999) 12 - This set was originally produced by W & F Faulkner in 1899 and was reprinted in 1989 with the firm’s name on the cards. The set was also reproduced in 1998 without the firm’s name on the front. These are not laugh-out-loud funny, but will raise a wry smile as the colour pictures humorously show another meaning for the words used. For instance the card titled ‘Police Court’ shows a policeman courting a lady, whilst ‘The thin blue line’ depicts a very skinny policeman. The backs are completely blank, but despite this it would make an interesting addition to any collection and is sure to be a hit with any Copper. Cards size 64 x 38mm.

Amalgamated Tobacco Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Nature Series 1958 Nature Series 1958 25 - This series was originally issued in Mauritius for export only with ‘Mills’ cigarettes and contains colour pictures of creatures or plants. In a break from the normal rather than look at animals this shines the light on insects, amphibians, arachnids etc. For instance we see different varieties of Sea Slugs, the birth of frogs and newts, the world’s largest flower, jelly fish, a giant crab, a special birds nest, the use of colours as warnings in reptiles, corals, minute life in ponds and streams, the remarkable sight of driver ants attacking a snake, a sperm whale catching a squid, how water spiders use their diving bell, magnified water mites, star fish and the stages in the birth of a dragon fly. The blue text on the back gives plenty of explanation concerning each of these wonders making these educational as well as attractive cards. This was also issued by Sketchley Cleaners in 1960 and Sweetule Products in 1958 both of which are titled Nature Series. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Ching Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Do You Know 1962 Do You Know 1962 25 - This interesting and colourful set covers the sort of questions that these days we can easily find the answer to online, but in the 1960s, when this was issued, would require a trip to the library such as how a Brazil nut grows, how a grasshopper sings, how a nettle stings, how fast an ostrich can travel or why a billiard cue is bevelled. Comprehensive explanations are given on the card backs. Our favourite has to be ‘Why a horse-shoe is used for luck’ as this has a local connection. Apparently these are considered lucky because legend says that St Dunstan, who was born just down the road, was noted for his skill in shoeing horses and he shoed the devil’s hoof, but this caused the devil so much pain he vowed never to enter a place where a horse-shoe was displayed – so now you know! This set was also produced by B.T. Ltd, Cromwell Stores, Ovaltine, S. Prior and Sweetule Products and was also part of a set of 50 produced by Liam Devlin & Sons – see website for availability. This set is size 68 x 36mm.

Ching Ships & Shipping Ships and Their Workings 1961 Ships and Their Workings 1961 25 - This unusual set contains colour pictures of ships with cut away sections so you can see into the hold or numbered sections which are explained on the card backs. For instance we see a fast pilot launch built for Trinity House with a cut away portion showing its Rolls-Royce diesel engines and a hydrofoil which has numbered sections showing the power unit, vertical propeller shafts and one of the hydrofoils. Among the vessels is a whale factory ship, fire-float, a U.S.A atomic submarine, car ferry, trawler, lifeboat, aircraft carrier, steamboat, weather ship, tug etc. This set was also produced by E.H. Booth in 1963, Clover Dairies in 1966 and Dunhills in 1962. An interesting look at ships and shipping with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Carreras Fish, Fishing & the Ocean Sport Fish 1978 Sport Fish 1978 50 - This is set an angler’s dream as it not only contains rather good colour pictures of fish that can be caught in an around the British Isles, but the text on the back gives you helpful hints on when and where to find them, what sort of bait to use, the average weight, markings and habits. For instance we are told that the Porbeagle Shark averages 100lb and is an ideal quarry for big fish hunters. It can be found between June and October off the Isle of Wight, West Country and coast of Ireland, but you will need a heavy shark rod and 120lb line to go after this beauty. There are plenty of more common examples from our rivers and seas including Dace, Roach, Chub, Common Carp, Tench, Catfish, Perch, Eel, Pike, Trout (both Rainbow, Sea and Brown), Salmon, Dab, Flounder, Turbot, Mackerel, Common Skate, Pollack, Ling, Bass etc. Catching all of these would be quite a challenge and respect to any who have achieved this, but this set is not just for anglers as the detailed pictures are also worth adding to any collection, especially if you are a nature lover. Size 70 x 35mm. A special album to contain this set was also issued – see website for availability

Players Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds and Their Young 2nd Series (unissued) 1955 Birds and Their Young 2nd Series (unissued) 1955 25 - In 1955 Players prepared two sets of 25 cards for issue. The pictures and text for both these sets was taken from the 1937 set of the same name, but split into two sets of 25 and unlike the original issue these did not have adhesive backs or the album advert. We love the pictures in this second set showing a Mute Swan and cygnets, the Starling feeding its chick from a bowl, the adorably fluffy chicks of the Redshank, a Greenfinch who looks like he has had enough of his greedy chicks and the Bullfinches using teamwork to keep their chicks fed. A delightful set with cards size 66 x 36mm.

Amalgamated Tobacco Ships & Shipping Ports of The World 1957 Ports of The World 1957 25 - This series was issued with “Mills” Cigarettes in Mauritius. The colour pictures depict ports from around the world including four from the British Isles, namely Liverpool, London, Plymouth and Southampton. Among the overseas examples are Sydney, Cape Town, New York, Hong Kong, Rio De Janeiro, Oslo, San Francisco, Rotterdam, Naples, Bombay, Singapore, Vancouver and Port of Tewfik in Egypt which is unfamiliar now and better known as Suez Port. Oddly two of the cards both depict Lisbon in Portugal, albeit one pictures Estoril Beach and the other a port scene, but we are not clear why Lisbon was so favoured. There is a good description of the ports in the blue text on the numbered backs. This is an excellent set with cards size 67 x 36mm.
