Wills Flowers and the Garden Garden Flowers New Varieties 2nd Series 1939 Garden Flowers New Varieties 2nd Series 1939 L40 - Popular 1930s garden writer Richard Sudell was a Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society and was commission by Wills to select and describe new varieties of garden flowers for a series of cards. This is the second in the series and was issued in June 1939. We have to say he picked some good’uns, which are beautifully illustrated on the front, and include Begonia (Fire Sea), Cosmea, Dahlia (Killarney), Gazania (Treasure Flower), Iris (Golden Hind), Lupin (Attraction), Nsturtium (Scarlet Empress), Nolana Lanceolata (Blue Ensign), Rose (Permanent Wave) and Violet (Princess of Wales). The descriptions on the back contain helpful information concerning height and type of plant, what soil it likes and where they are best planted etc. A fantastic set particularly for anyone interested in horticulture. Foh Chong (China) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Chinese Series c1930 Chinese Series c1930 M10 - Not being able to read the Chinese characters on the front we can’t tell you much about this set other than the fact that it has pink borders, is numbered in English on the front and appears to show ancient characters from Chinese history or myth with the artwork nicely done in a traditional style. Churchman Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Eastern Proverbs 1st Series 1931 Eastern Proverbs 1st Series 1931 25 - This charming little set originally issued in 1931, features colourful illustrations of ancient proverbs from the East. The informative backs give us an idea of the meaning and also compares similar sayings from other countries including Britain. For instance the Indian proverb ‘Call on God, but row away from the rocks’ is compared to the Persian ‘Trust in Allah but spread not your prayer-carpet in a wet place and Cromwell’s ‘Trust in God but keep your powder dry’. The meaning of some is obvious just from the pictures and text on the front such as ‘Look at the mother before becoming engaged to the daughter’ however some are more obscure such as ‘Picking up a large stone is a sign it won’t be thrown’ or ‘Look the other way when the girl at the tea house smiles’. A lovely set size 68 x 36mm. The set was also reprinted in 2001,

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Gran Pop by Lawson Wood 1934 Gran Pop by Lawson Wood 1934 L50 - Produced by Carreras in 1934 it is a series of 50 cards featuring ‘Gran-Pop’, a cartoon ape, in humorous colour drawings by the English painter and illustrator Lawson Wood. As well as appearing on cards the ‘Gran-Pop’ character also appeared in a series of annuals that were sold round the world. Lawson Wood was very much concerned with animal welfare and as well as being a member of the Royal Zoological Society he also founded a sanctuary for old animals, but the apes and other animals in his drawings find themselves in very human situations with suitably humorous captions. The card backs contain sepia photos and text showing the manufacture of cigarettes including an illustration of the Arcadia Works of Carreras Ltd in Hampstead Road, London where we are told “happy, healthy workpeople make good cigarettes with care, pride and conscience under the most hygienic manufacturing conditions”. Size 80 x 63mm. This was also produced in a smaller format size 70 x 41mm.

Abdulla Flowers and the Garden Old Favourites (Flowers) 1936 Old Favourites (Flowers) 1936 25 - Titled Old Favourites the 25 cards contain lovely colour pictures of more traditional garden flowers and the numbered backs give information about the plants including uses and flowering times. Some of the beauties included are the Tulip, which flowers at this time of year, the Tritoma which is better known as the Red Hot Poker, the Sunflower whose oily seeds we are told are enjoyed by chickens, the Snapdragon, the scented Stock, Sweet William, Polyanthus which was formerly known as “bunch-primrose” we are told, the stunning Peony, spring-flowering Pansy and Daffodil, easy to grow Nasturtium, cottage garden favourites the Lupin and Hollyhock, purple Iris, the Foxglove which the card tells us is the source of the drug digitalis, the quickly spreading Forget-Me-Not, plus the stunning Dahlia and Chrysanthemum, the fragrant Cabbage Rose and the later flowering Aster which puts on a show in September and October. Incidentally the back of the Lupin card tells us it will grow in poor soil as it has the power of utilizing nitrogen from the air to enrich the ground in which it grows making it suitable for any garden. Notaras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Views of China 1925 Views of China 1925 24 - Today’s visitors will have no difficulty recognising some of the country’s famous historic sights such as the Great Wall or Peking’s (Beijing) Forbidden City as these are still very much on the tourist trail, but the street and river scenes belong to another age without a skyscraper anywhere and the policeman on point duty in Shanghai looks as if he’s having a quiet time. The backs advertise ‘Silver Car Cigarettes’, but contain no information on the scenes pictured so we only have the caption for explanation. A fascinating glimpse into old China with cards size 69 x 45mm

Ardath Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Film Stars Series GP2 1939 Film Stars Series GP2 1939 M44 - The cards show black and white pictures of glamorous ladies including big names such as Betty Grable, Ann Sheridan, Joan Blondell and Olivia De Havilland. ‘Film Stars’ is a misnomer as some, like Helena Garvin, are models, whilst others are showgirls from the Windmill Theatre. The rest are not well-known although some appeared in films such as singer Shirley Ross who was in ‘Some Like It Hot’. It says something about how obscure many are that Monica Bishop is listed as ‘able to stand-in for well-known star Victoria Hopper’? and Muriel Baron is a pantomime boy. Size 80 x 56mm.

Gallaher Animals & Wildlife Wild Animals 1937 Wild Animals 1937 48 - This set was issued in 1937 and when it was reviewed in our magazine that year we described it as being nicely produced and said that “the compilers have shown commendable originality in the choice of subjects, many out of the way types such as the platypus, rare foxes, jerboa, tenrec, panda, pangolin and others being illustrated as well as many of the more familiar wild animals”. We would have to agree with this statement, but would add that these have first class colour artwork and the text includes some delightful touches such as the puma “purrs when pleased and like a kitten will jump to catch butterflies or play for hours by itself at hide-and-seek.” It also added that it is “friendly to man”, but alas man has not proved a good friend to the puma or many other species. We can’t praise this series highly enough. Cards size 63 x 37mm.

Churchman Ships & Shipping The Story of Navigation 1936 The Story of Navigation 1936 50 - When Queen Mary launched the new Cunard liner which bore her name in September 1934 it was like a tonic for a nation emerging from the long years of the depression. The superb vessel marked the latest chapter in a struggle to conquer the sea, a story which had begun thousands of years earlier when primitive man first crossed a river by floating on a log. It was these two extremes which Churchmans chose for the first and last cards in this series. The set continues with a Welsh coracle, a Viking ship and an Elizabethan galleon as well as Nelson’s flagship “Victory” which is now preserved at Portsmouth for all to admire. Also included are the magnificent clipper “Cutty Sark” which is still a major tourist attraction at Greenwich, “S.S. Great Britain” which is permanently on display in Bristol as a lasting tribute to Isambard Kingdom Brunel her talented designer plus great liners of the 20th century such as “Mauretania” which for more than 20 years was the speed queen of the North Atlantic and of course, the “Queen Mary” which is now a tourist attraction at Long Beach, California. You can re-live these great moments in maritime history with this finely produced colour series with plenty of facts on the reverse. These cards are size 67 x 36mm. This set was also reprinted in 1999.
