British American Tobacco (Domino) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Les Produits du Monde 1961 Les Produits du Monde 1961 25 - This series was issued for the lucrative overseas market which is why the green text and title are in French. The company name does not appear anywhere on these cards, but an advert for their ‘Domino Filter’ appears at the bottom on the reverse. The colourful pictures portray the flag and arms of a country with products for which they are best known illustrated alongside so, for instance, rice was the biggest export for China at the time so workers are seen in the paddy fields alongside the Chinese flag. Other examples include grapes alongside the Portuguese flag, coffee beans on the Brazilian flag, the standard for Holland is bordered by tulips, Ghana is shown with cocoa beans, Sri Lanka (or Ceylon as it was then known) is accompanied by workers on a tea plantation and England is represented by coal and agriculture. This series was also produced with English text by Sweetule in 1960 and Musgrave in 1961. The cards measure 68 x 36mm

Ching Ships & Shipping Ships and Their Workings 1961 Ships and Their Workings 1961 25 - This unusual set contains colour pictures of ships with cut away sections so you can see into the hold or numbered sections which are explained on the card backs. For instance we see a fast pilot launch built for Trinity House with a cut away portion showing its Rolls-Royce diesel engines and a hydrofoil which has numbered sections showing the power unit, vertical propeller shafts and one of the hydrofoils. Among the vessels is a whale factory ship, fire-float, a U.S.A atomic submarine, car ferry, trawler, lifeboat, aircraft carrier, steamboat, weather ship, tug etc. This set was also produced by E.H. Booth in 1963, Clover Dairies in 1966 and Dunhills in 1962. An interesting look at ships and shipping with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Ching Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Do You Know 1962 Do You Know 1962 25 - This interesting and colourful set covers the sort of questions that these days we can easily find the answer to online, but in the 1960s, when this was issued, would require a trip to the library such as how a Brazil nut grows, how a grasshopper sings, how a nettle stings, how fast an ostrich can travel or why a billiard cue is bevelled. Comprehensive explanations are given on the card backs. Our favourite has to be ‘Why a horse-shoe is used for luck’ as this has a local connection. Apparently these are considered lucky because legend says that St Dunstan, who was born just down the road, was noted for his skill in shoeing horses and he shoed the devil’s hoof, but this caused the devil so much pain he vowed never to enter a place where a horse-shoe was displayed – so now you know! This set was also produced by B.T. Ltd, Cromwell Stores, Ovaltine, S. Prior and Sweetule Products and was also part of a set of 50 produced by Liam Devlin & Sons – see website for availability. This set is size 68 x 36mm.

These excellent colour photos capture the birds in their natural habitants and there is informative text on the back written by Dennis Avon. Among the birds featured are woodpeckers, the brightly coloured kingfisher, common garden birds such as the blue tit, blackbird, chaffinch and sparrow, the reed warbler, house martin, swallow, waxwing, spotted flycatcher, oyster catcher, kestrel, golden eagle, barn owl, pied wagtail etc. An album was also produced to house these. Cards size 70 x 35mm.

Carreras A Special Offer of £2, £3 and £5 Sets Military Uniforms 1976 Military Uniforms 1976 50 - This set takes a look at British uniforms from 1860 to 1960 and provides a historical record of the changing times in the armed services. We see how breeches give way to trousers and the ornate braiding, gold edging and lace are gradually pared down. The set starts with a Musketeer of the King’s Royal Regiment of Guards in 1660 with his blue breeches and red gaiters and continues with an officer of the First Regiment of Foot Guards 1685, a Garde Te Voet in stunning blue and gold uniform who accompanied William of Orange when he succeeded to the British throne, a Private of the Grenadier Company 1791, a Sergeant of the Coldstream Regiment of Foot from the time of the American Revolutionary Wars, an 1812 Foot Guards Ensign carrying the regimental colour, a Light Company Officer of the Scots Fusilier Guards 1846, Coldstream Guards Drummer, a Grenadier Guards Pioneer of 1853 portrayed with apron and axe, 1853 Bandsman etc. Also included is a 1925 Subaltern wearing “plus fours” and puttees which had been adopted in the First World War, battle dress from 1950, kilts of the Irish and Scots Guards and No. 1 Dress of the Coldstream Guards of 1960. Good pictures with informative text on the reverse. An album was also issued to accompany this set. Size 69 x 36mm

Players Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds and Their Young 2nd Series (unissued) 1955 Birds and Their Young 2nd Series (unissued) 1955 25 - In 1955 Players prepared two sets of 25 cards for issue. The pictures and text for both these sets was taken from the 1937 set of the same name, but split into two sets of 25 and unlike the original issue these did not have adhesive backs or the album advert. We love the pictures in this second set showing a Mute Swan and cygnets, the Starling feeding its chick from a bowl, the adorably fluffy chicks of the Redshank, a Greenfinch who looks like he has had enough of his greedy chicks and the Bullfinches using teamwork to keep their chicks fed. A delightful set with cards size 66 x 36mm.
