Wills Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Safety First 1934 (CCS reprint 2000) Safety First 1934 (CCS reprint 2000) 50 - Road safety was a real problem in 1934 when these were originally issued and the colourful cards illustrate some of the dangers. Actually aside from issues with tramlines and using hand signals as there were no indicators most these safety instructions are still relevant today, but it is the charming vintage pictures which are the real attraction. The warnings include not overtaking on bends, not squeezing through traffic if you are a motor-cyclist, how to pass animals, how to correct a skid and not to throw anything from a moving car as well as how to cross safely. There is plenty of further information on the card backs. Cards size 68 x 36mm.

Among those featured are Imperial Airways ‘Scylla’ which carried a crew of 5 and 39 passengers and there is a separate illustration of one of the crew preparing lunch. We also see a twin-engined Potez 62 from Air France, a German Luft Hansa Heinkel HE.111 which ominously has the swastika symbol on its tail fin, a K.L.M (Dutch) Fokker F.XXII, a stylish seaplane of the Ala Littoria (Italian) airline, a Swissair Douglas D.C2, a Aeroput (Yugoslavia) Dragon-Rapide, a Delta and Northwest Airlines Lockheed ‘Electra’ and a Pan American Airways’ clipper class flying boat. The interior of this flying boat is also pictured and we can see travellers in comfy armchairs having a smoke. We are also shown inside the cockpit of a Quantas ‘Commonwealth’ class liner which looks worryingly basic and cramped. The numbered backs give plenty of information on the company and the aircraft. Gallaher Flowers and the Garden Garden Flowers 1938 Garden Flowers 1938 48 - Most of the subjects in this series are instantly recognisable even to those of us who are not regular viewers of “Gardener’s World”, but some are less familiar – Lychris, Layia and Hemerocallis being cases in point – see them for yourself on 43,31 and 18 respectively. A surprising inclusion is Apple Blossom (no. 5) which I’m sure most of us wouldn’t count as a ‘garden’ flower, but when all’s said and done it doesn’t really matter because they’re lovely to look at and the backs tell you how to grow them successfully . Wills Reprinted Series Overseas Dominions Australia 1915 (CCS reprint 2003) Overseas Dominions Australia 1915 (CCS reprint 2003) 50 - I am sure that many of these subjects would be unrecognisable to modern day Australians and nor would they take kindly to being listed as a dominion, but that said this is a charming little set which tries to give a flavour of the vast and varied country. The views of Sydney look very different without the usual Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, neither of which were built in 1915 when the set was originally issued. Some of the other views such as the Blue Mountains, The Devil’s Coach House and Cape Pillar are unchanged, but I am guessing that horse (or oxen) and carts are no longer used for harvesting wheat and collecting pineapples, logs, wool or sugar cane. Also whilst kangaroo are still sometimes hunted I doubt this is done on horseback with dogs and I do hope that the catching of turtles for their shells and food has long since ceased. The last card deals which something which sadly has not stopped – the threat of a bush fire – which is still a problem today. A lovely set size 68 x 36mm
