Westminster Tobacco Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Australia 2nd Series (Plain back) 1933 Australia 2nd Series (Plain back) 1933 36 - This set was prepared around 1933 but never actually issued and pictures scenes from around Australia. Unfortunately the backs are plain so aside from the title on the front there is no other information. What is nice about this set is that as well as the usual tourist spots such as the Captain Cook monument, Wilson Hall in Melbourne, Leura Falls in the Blue Mountains, Mount Buffalo, the Brisbane River, the Botanical Gardens Adelaide and Martin Place, Sydney there are unusual scenes of showing people and places of work such as pearl fishermen, carting timber in Victoria, Tasmanian hop fields, a pineapple plantation, , cotton growing, a drover’s camp, a South Australian Vineyard, harvesting wheat and the Golden Mile in Western Australia or involved in leisure pursuits such as climbing Mount Feathertop in Victoria, sailing in Sydney Harbour or enjoying the races at the Melbourne Cup. Also including is the royal visit for the state opening of Australia’s new capital Canberra. A fascinating set with card size 66 x 35mm

Wills Reprinted Series Gems of Belgian Architecture 1915 (CCS reprint 2001) Gems of Belgian Architecture 1915 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - These really are gems containing detailed drawings of lovely old buildings in Belgium, but sadly by the time these were issued Belgium was at war with Germany and over the course of the First World War many of these buildings were to be destroyed. This is particularly true of Ypres where the magnificent Cloth Hall and Belfry shown on card no. 4 was reduced to little more than rubble. The card backs tell us the history of the buildings and also comment on the war. We are told, for instance, that Dixmude was destroyed in fierce fighting between Belgian and Germany troops and the card picturing the Law Courts at Liege contains the poignant words “it is to be hoped that this beautiful and dignified monument has been spared by the Germans”. There are lovely views of Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp, Ostend etc. and this delightful reprint set is well worth adding to any collection. The numbered backs give interesting facts about the region. Size 68 x 36mm.

Perhaps best value of all is a Morgan for well under £200 with a road tax of just £7.10s. Wonderful nostalgia, Size 68 x 36mm.

Churchman Reprinted Series Story of Navigation 1936 (CCS reprint 1999) Story of Navigation 1936 (CCS reprint 1999) 50 - When Queen Mary launched the new Cunard liner which bore her name in September 1934 it was like a tonic for a nation emerging from the long years of the depression. The superb vessel marked the latest chapter in a struggle to conquer the sea, a story which had begun thousands of years earlier when primitive man first crossed a river by floating on a log. It was these two extremes which Churchmans chose for the first and last cards in this series. The set continues with a Welsh coracle, a Viking ship and an Elizabethan galleon as well as Nelson’s flagship “Victory” which is now preserved at Portsmouth for all to admire. Also included are the magnificent clipper “Cutty Sark” which is still a major tourist attraction at Greenwich, “S.S. Great Britain” which is permanently on display in Bristol as a lasting tribute to Isambard Kingdom Brunel her talented designer plus great liners of the 20th century such as “Mauretania” which for more than 20 years was the speed queen of the North Atlantic and of course, the “Queen Mary” which is now a tourist attraction at Long Beach, California. You can re-live these great moments in maritime history with this finely produced colour series with plenty of facts on the reverse. These cards are size 67 x 36mm. This set was originally printed in 1936.

Wills Reprinted Series Household Hints 1st Series 1927 (CCS reprint 1999) Household Hints 1st Series 1927 (CCS reprint 1999) 50 - Converting a gas bracket, repairing linoleum, renewing a broken sash-line. Not the kind of skills do-it-your-selvers need to acquire today, but obviously important eighty years ago. Bookbinding, re-webbing a chair and making a coal-box are projects unlikely to turn up often in this day and age. Others such as paper-hanging, erecting shelves, replacing a washer and cleaning a waste pipe, should prove useful. Originally issued in 1927, now available as a reprint. Size 68 x 36mm

Churchman Reprinted Series In Town To-Night 1938 (CCS reprint 1999) In Town To-Night 1938 (CCS reprint 1999) 50 - In the 1930,s the Saturday evening radio show was ‘In Town Tonight’ which began with the cry of a Piccadilly flower seller in the background as “we stop the roar of London’s traffic.” The recording was the voice of Mrs Emma Baker whose picture appears on card no. 2 in Churchman’s 1938 series of fifty, which takes its title from the programme. The basis of the show, and the cards, was to meet people from all walks of life who happened to be in London that night. So on these cards we meet the likes of Cyclone Danny Carter, the international stunt rider; John Tussaud, Madame Tussaud’s great grandson; Christina Foyle of booksellers fame; Dante, the master magician; Prince Monolulu, the racing tipster; Captain Slocum, British Airways pilot; and engine-driver William Hagland who apparently used the cigarette card of himself to prove his identity when appearing as a witness in court. Size 68 x 36mm. This is the reprinted issue originally issued in 1938

Mitchell Reprinted Series First Aid 1938 (CCS reprint 2001) First Aid 1938 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - These monochrome cards with informative backs, originally issued in 1928, were designed to be stored in a medicine chest where we are told they would prove invaluable in the case of an emergency. The cards take us through basics such as equipment for a first aid kid and how to tie various slings and bandages, but then get\\\\r\\\\nserious as we are shown an x-ray of a fracture and encouraged to use household items including golf clubs, umbrellas and broom handles as splints. We are advised not to move the patient until the splint is secured, but frankly I would have thought it ambitious to move a patient with a fractured thigh or kneecap no matter how well splinted. We then learn how to approach an electric shock victim, treat choking, scalds, remove foreign bodies from ears and eyes, remove fish hooks from hands and what to use as antidotes to common poisons, then he last card graphically shows a lady on fire. A useful but somewhat scary set! Size 68 x 36mm.

Cope Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Toy Models (The Country Fair) c1930 Toy Models (The Country Fair) c1930 L25 - These 25 cards are delightful, they were designed to be cut out so you could make your own old fashioned fair. The fronts contain lovely colour pictures with instructions on how to cut them out and put them together so they stand up. Amongst the charming stalls you could reproduce are the Cokernut Shy (which today we would spell coconut), Punch and Judy, Houpla, Ginger-Beer stall and a Toffee stand. Also included are the turnstile with entry priced at 3d each, a colourful Merry-Go-Round, Swings, Performing Donkeys, a Gipsy Fortune Teller, Hurdy-Gurdy machine complete with monkey, Ice-Cream Barrow, Water Chute, Photographer with tripod camera and the Fat Lady’s Tent (most inappropriate these days) where the sign says she weighs “under 2 ½ ton”! A curious inclusion is the Motor Dragon, which presumably was a dragon disguised motor which drove around the fairground?

Wills Reprinted Series Do You Know 2nd Series 1924 (CCS reprint 2003) Do You Know 2nd Series 1924 (CCS reprint 2003) 50 - This set originally issued in 1924 but reproduced in 2003 answers all sorts of questions such as which animals live the longest? (the giant land tortoise by the way!), why apples go brown when cut, where the world’s oldest buildings are, why a camel has a hump, why a cock is used on church weather-vanes, how flies walk upside-down etc. The colourful pictures on the front admirably illustrate the subject whilst the backs provide all the necessary explanation. Some questions make sense, such as which is the most beautiful building in the world? (the Taj Mahal in case you were wondering), but you have to wonder who would ask why the horse straightens its fore-legs first and the cow its hind-legs when rising? A fine set for any collection..
