Wilson Horse Racing and the Turf Hunting with The South Wold 2000 Hunting with The South Wold 2000 L10 - These colourful Hunting scenes were photographed in Lincolnshire with the South Wold pack, mostly along the former Great Northern Railway line which ran up the east side of the county to Grimsby, during the 1999-2000 season. For how much longer this activity will be around for is anyone’s guess, but meanwhile you can follow the red-coated horsemen and their hounds on these cards. Variable amounts of information on the backs may include sire and dam, owner, driver and record feat/s. Incidentally, Sundew’s card back refers (rightly) to Fred Winter as the winning rider in the 1957 National, but also states Sundew won with Tim Maloney in 1952 (that race was won by Teal with A.P. G D S Cards Horse Racing and the Turf 1960s Racehorse Winners 2007 1960s Racehorse Winners 2007 L20 - It was back in 1994 that G.D.S began issuing cards, and their early series were on racehorses, not surprising since Gerald D. Segasby (G D S) is an ex-jockey. This latest series in monochrome within an orange border features some pretty aristocratic horse-flesh including Derby winners (St. Paddy, Sea Bird, Royal Palace, Relko and Blakeney) and Grand National champions such as Team Spirit, Kilmore and Foinavon, with career histories on the backs. Size 80 x 63mm.

G D S Cards Horse Racing and the Turf One Thousand Guineas Winners 1981-2000 (2005) One Thousand Guineas Winners 1981-2000 (2005) L20 - GDS has built a reputation for its knowledge of the horse-racing world and for the quality of its cards, whether they be original artwork, as in the early series, or photographs, this set features colour winners of the classic One Thousand Guineas races from 1981 to 2000 inclusive. The backs name the winner (and the others ‘in the frame’), the owner, jockey, etc, and provide a brief commentary on how the race was run. Following a single race over a twenty-year period, we see how jockeys such as Piggott and Carson have given way to the likes of Dettori and Fallon, whilst the prize money has increased from £52,000 to £145,000. But Gerald Segasby, the ex-jockey who is GDS Cards, has chosen for this set a period long before my visit to the track. Each card covers two years between 1776 and 1815, showing the owners’ colours, with race details on the back. Size 80 x 64mm.

G D S Cards Horse Racing and the Turf Two Thousand Guineas Winners 1981-2000 (2005) Two Thousand Guineas Winners 1981-2000 (2005) L20 - This showpiece race at Newmarket each spring is the first of the flat seasons classics, and here we see colour action shots of recent (1981 to 2000 inclusive) races in progress, presented in the same way front and back as the 1,000 Guineas set reviewed above. Close finishes often add excitement, as in 1985 when Lester Piggott’s mount won by a hand, and 1987 when Willie Carson’s ‘Don’t Forget Me’ was the victor by a neck. Size 80 x 64mm.

Boguslavsky Horse Racing and the Turf Big Events on the Turf (133x70mm) 1924 (reprint 1995) Big Events on the Turf (133x70mm) 1924 (reprint 1995) EL12 - The size of the cards really does justice to the colourful racing scenes and show actual racing scenes such as the Grand National of 23rd March 1923. The leading horses in the picture are all named with the first, second and third mentioned in the white border at the bottom which also tells us, amongst other facts, that Sergeant Murphy won by 3 lengths and that only 7 horses completed the course. Other horse racing action in the set shows the Lincolnshire Handicap, The One and Two Thousand Guineas, The Great Jubilee Handicap, The Derby and Oaks, The Gold Cup and Stewards’ Cup, St Leger plus the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire Stakes. The backs are full of facts and the cards are size 134 x 70mm.

G D S Cards Horse Racing and the Turf Earl of Derby Collection of Racehorse Paintings 2004 Earl of Derby Collection of Racehorse Paintings 2004 L20 - Ex-jockey Gerald Segasby tells us Lord Derby permitted his paintings to be used for this series on the understanding the horses were researched to provide a descriptive plaque for each work of art in the collection hung in his home, Knowsley Hall in Lancashire. The resulting set is unique because it is the first time the majority of these paintings have been seen by the public. The quality of colour reproduction and detailed texts is excellent and we see many fine horses from the 1787 Derby winner through to the victor of the 1936 One Thousand Guineas and including the legendary Hyperion who won the 1933 Derby and St. Leger.
