G D S Cards Flowers and the Garden Orchids by Robert Warner and Thomas Moore (1882) 2010 Orchids by Robert Warner and Thomas Moore (1882) 2010 L20 - It’s a fallacy to assume that orchids are restricted to the tropics. In the field next to my house hundreds of pyramid orchids and bee orchids flourish, and in this set of cards we see the Lady’s-slipper which flourishes in limestone areas across England. But the more exotic varieties which hale from South America and Asia are pictured on the other nineteen cards showing how extraordinarily diverse these plants are, and the lovely artwork does justice to the blooms whilst the text provide much factual information. Size 80 x 61mm

Players Flowers and the Garden Britains Wild Flowers Grandee Issue 1986 Britains Wild Flowers Grandee Issue 1986 L30 - There are some lovely colour pictures of wild flowers in this set which are every bit as beautiful as their cultivated cousins and there is plenty of information about them on the numbered card backs. Included are the Wood Anemone which carpets the ground in Spring, the Greater Stitchwort which takes its name from the belief is could cure the pain you get on over exercising, the Cowslip which is now recovering after being on the endangered list, the Germander Speedwell with its blue/purple flowers, the scentless Red Campion, the Bird’s-Foot Trefoil which takes its name from the shape of its seedpods, Yellow Flag a member of the Iris family, Field Scabious which blooms from June to October, the Field or Corn Poppy with its bright red flowers, the Common Mallow which also have medicinal uses and the Harebell with its delicate purple flowers. An album to house this set was originally available from Players and they also issued this set with Player’s Doncella. A lovely set with cards size 90 x 50mm

Players Flowers and the Garden Hidden Beauties (Plant Life Highly Magnified) 1929 Hidden Beauties (Plant Life Highly Magnified) 1929 25 - Back in 1929 Players produced a series of 25 Hidden Beauties and the back of card 1 in the set explains that “objects which to our eyes may appear commonplace, uninteresting, insignificant or dull often reveal unexpected loveliness when seen under the microscope" and ”Hidden Beauties are often present where least expected.” As promised there are some fascinating close up colour images from the natural world like the leg-combs of a spider, periwinkle tongue, live mould, a maise leaf slice and flower dust (pollen). The fantastic pictures on the front are backed by a full explanation on the reverse so we learn that the air contains spores which produce plants when they find a good home so if cheese is left exposed to the ai.r it will eventually become mouldy or that as well as climbing and capturing prey spiders use their leg-combs for cleaning of both themselves and their web. This interesting set would look good in any collection. Size 68 x 36mm

Bon Air (USA) Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds and Flowers of the States 1991 Birds and Flowers of the States 1991 LT50 - There used to be 48, then came Hawaii and Alaska in 1959 to complete the fifty United States of America. In 1982 the U.S. Postal Service produced a 20 cent stamp for each state depicting the state bird and flower. These have now been reproduced as a boxed set of cards which have interesting facts about the state on the numbered backs. Apparently the stamps were praised as the most attractive ever produced in that country. Enlargement to this size further enhances their appearance and you will learn more about America from the card backs than you would from a modern ‘A’ level course. Highly recommended. Size 89 x 64mm
