Victoria Gallery Fish, Fishing & the Ocean Deep Sea Diving 1997 Deep Sea Diving 1997 50 - These cards tell the story of man’s attempts to explore the underwater world from the Victorian era through to World War II. Amazingly the twelve-bolt helmet invented by Augustus Siebe in 1837 remained in production until 1975! The set covers all manner of diving things including life-saving breathing apparatus and a recompression chamber, communication underwater, diving pumps, airlocks and salvage operations including that on HMS Gladiator which was sunk in the Solent in 1908. There is plenty of fascinating information on the card backs including the harrowing fact that divers working on the reclamation of the Gladiator in the pitch black and confined spaces had to shoulder aside the corpses of the sailors in order to close the watertight doors so she could be pumped out. Riveting stuff. Cards size 68 x 36mm

M P Cards Fish, Fishing & the Ocean Nishikigoi Koi Carp 1997 Nishikigoi Koi Carp 1997 L14 - These beautiful colour pictures are the work of artist K. Siddle and show the wonderful markings so prized by owners of these fish. Perhaps the most striking is the Shusui on the last card which has dark blue scales along the ridge of the back. The backs tell you what to look for if you want a prize wining fish. Just as pedigree dogs have to have certain shaped heads or markings etc. so to be a champion koi carp the patterns must be in the right colours and in the right places and we are advised on the back of the Taisho Sanke card that black stripes sometimes appear in the pectoral fins, but should not exceed two or three stripes or that a Tancho should only have a round red mark on its head which must not extend over the eye or lips. This set takes an interesting look at an unusual subject and are size 80 x 62mm

Morris Fish, Fishing & the Ocean At the London Zoo Aquarium 1928 At the London Zoo Aquarium 1928 35 - As you would expect this contains pictures of the weird and wonderful creatures to be found at the Aquarium, but what makes this set stand out is the use of superb colour artwork. The artists responsible have managed to give the marine life a bit of a make-over and even the oddest looking specimens appear to their best advantage. Included in this set are a Perch, Star-fish, Smooth Spur-Toed Frog, Thornback Skate, Octopus and Sea-Horse. The backs contain facts about the creature including their favorite food. The Star-fish, we are told, can stay for days in the same position, but can move rapidly if disturbed. Apparently they particularly enjoy eating oysters. The Thornback Skate used to be found all around the British Isles and can vary in size between two to four feet. Unfortunately their thorny bodies are easily trapped in the nets of trawlers and there are concerns about their long-term survival in UK waters. Sea-Horses too are under threat worldwide and even back in 1928 the card says they were rarely found off the coast of England. Only two species of Sea-Horse live in these waters, but they are difficult to see as they are very good at disguising themselves spending most of their time clinging by their tail to stems of seaweed. These tiny creatures swim with their body erect but one of the most interesting things about them is that it is the male that carries the young in an abdominal pouch.

Design At London Colour Ltd Fish, Fishing & the Ocean Underwater Predators 2018 Underwater Predators 2018 EL20 - This set is both fascinating and scary at the same time. It pictures some of the creatures that lurk underwater around the world and the text on the back was written by keen angler Kevin Midmore who is pictured on some of the cards with his catch. The set includes two species often seen in water parks, the Dolphin and Orca, but there are some fearsome predators featured which only an angler would want to meet such as the Wells Catfish, Bull and Great White Sharks, Barracuda, Payara nicknamed Vampire Fish, Moray Eels whose bite is so severe that it isn’t \\r\\nRight: new Predators set\\r\\nreleased even in death and the incredibly ugly Atlantic Goosefish with it’s huge mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. You may never go into the water again after seeing these cards, but they offer an interesting look at some of the most effective killers of the deep and the pictures are excellent. Size 102 x 74mm
