Hignett Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Actors Natural and Character Studies 1938 Actors Natural and Character Studies 1938 50 - Description: 1938 and Hollywood was booming. New cinemas were springing up everywhere, new colour photography was bringing greater realism to the silver screen and the public flocked to picture palaces in their droves. Film star cigarette card sets were the latest craze for collectors, and Hignetts joined the bonanza, but their set had a novel approach. Each card has two pictures, one of the star’s natural pose, the other showing him or her in character mode. Examples are W.C. Field (as Mr. Micawber), Boris Karloff (“The Mummy”), George Robey, Gracie Fields, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Mr Douglas Bying (cast as Queen Elizabeth!) and Florence Desmond on no. 9 playing Elizabeth Bergner who is pictured on no. 2. An absolutely brilliant set. This set was also issued by Ogdens. Size 68 x 36mm

Phillips Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Screen Stars Series A Frame not embossed 1936 Screen Stars Series A Frame not embossed 1936 48 - Although cinema attendances have picked up since the opening of new multiplexes admissions are still only a fraction of those in 1936 when this series was issued. This was a time when the silver screen dominated leisure activity and a new breed of glamorous Hollywood superstars such as Ida Lupino, Ginger Rogers and Spencer Tracy held audiences spell-bound. Little wonder then that film star series were the most common card issues of the period – so numerous, in fact, that the new issues editor in our magazine Cigarette Card News in August 1936, C.L. Porter, said “sick as I am of the subject…” when opening his review of this set. He went on to admit that the production of this series was “most attractive” – a little grudging perhaps considering the obvious amount of care that has gone into producing this set, particularly the portraits, to give such a pleasing variety of poses, true-to-life pictures, superb colouring, embossed edged oval portrait within a white background style and informative text. All are excellent and combine to make what in our view is possibly the best of all the film series. Series A was also issued with frame embossed. Series B was also produced in the same format, but although some of the same stars appear in both the majority are different. These cards are size 68 x 35mm.

Jackson Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Shots from the Films 1937 Shots from the Films 1937 M24 - This excellent black and white set includes the big-budget epic Elephant Boy which had come out earlier that year and made a star of the true-life elephant boy Sabu. Another newcomer that year was Humphrey Bogart who had a tough-man role in “Black Legion”. The 1930s were the heyday of the film musical and Britain’s top female singing and dancing star, Jessie Matthews, is pictured in a still from “Head over Heels”. 1937 was a vintage year for the cinema as is demonstrated by this set which also shows scenes from “King Solomon’s Mines”, “Romeo & Juliet”, “Charge of the Light Brigade” with Errol Flynn and “A Woman Rebels” starring a youthful Katherine Hepburn. A small size set of 28 was also produced which also included these last three cards plus “Black Legion”, “General Spanky”, “Cain & Mabel”, “The Plough & The Stars”, “Flying Hostess”, “Well Done Henry”, “Take a Chance” and “Sensation”, but all have different pictures. Aside from these all the other subjects are different as is the informative text on the numbered backs. Wonderful Stuff! Cards size 76 x 51mm

Gallaher Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Stars of Screen and Stage back in Brown 1935 Stars of Screen and Stage back in Brown 1935 48 - In recent years cinema has undergone a resurgence with bigger audiences and a succession of box office blockbusters, but admissions are never going to regain the dizzy heights of the 1930s when the silver screen reigned supreme. This set turns the clock back to 1935 when some of the greatest stars of all time were pulling in crowds of fifty million or more a week at palatial cinemas around the country. Issued with Gallaher’s Cigarettes’ these colour pictures and informative text backs allow us to get up-close and personal with favourite stars of the era. For instance we see Gary Cooper (educated in England and a newspaper cartoonist before taking up acting), George Robey (music hall’s ‘Prime Minister of Mirth’), Ronald Colman (born in Richmond and a seaside pierrot before films), Beatrice Lilley with her unique gift of humour and mimicry, Florence Desmond (no stranger to collectors because of the Carreras Film Stars series bearing her name), the Houston Sisters (Renee was in radio’s “The Petticoat Line” until the 1980s), Jack Hulbert (whose name is inseparably linked with his equally popular wife Cicely Courtneidge), Bebe Daniels who like Ginger Rogers (also in this set) made her name in ‘42nd Street’ and is remembered for her role in radio’s ‘Life With the Lyons’ with her husband Ben Lyon and comedy favourites Laurel and Hardy. Pure nostalgia with cards size 63 x 37mm. This set was also issued with a green back.

Ardath Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Who Is This? (Film Stars) 1936 Who Is This? (Film Stars) 1936 50 - Ardath’s Who Is This? dating from 1936. The set’s unique feature is in showing only part of the face, with a hint below as to the personality’s identity – for Ginger Rogers for example it is “who is fascinating from head to dancing feet?” It really is a who’s who of the Hollywood elite of the time and includes Astaire, Dietrich, Garbo, Harlow, Hepburn, Clark Gable, Gracie Fields, Norma Shearer, Leslie Howard and many more – all with biographies through to their latest film appearances on the backs. A real treat from the golden age of cinema. Size 68 x 36mm
