Carreras Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Glamour Girls of Stage and Films 1939 Glamour Girls of Stage and Films 1939 EL36 - A bevy of beauties in swimsuits or revealing costumes, quite racy for that period. Most are show-girls rather than film actresses, and in many cases the venue at which they are appearing is mentioned – seven of them at Rose’s Casa Manana, others at Rose’s Diamond Horseshoe, Paradise Restaurant, Midnight Sun Cabaret, Fischer’s International Casino and Hollywood Restaurant, and many of the photos are attributed to “Murray Korman, N.Y” implying American origin. Size 99 x 69mm. Also issued in 3 other sizes

That aside this is an ideal set for film buffs featuring fine black and white pictures of famous stars with their name and studio at the bottom. Included are Loretta Young, British star Jack Hulbert, the legendary Clark Gable who actually married Carol Lombard in 1939, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Norma Shearer, Robert Montgomery, blond bombshell Jean Harlow, Swedish born actress Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, James Cagney and Paramount star Tallulah Bankhead. The backs all contain an advert for ‘Tatley’s Cigarettes’ which we are told are made in England and are a product of a firm that has specialized in tobacco for over two hundred years. Size 66 x 35mm

Ogdens Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Actors Natural and Character Studies 1938 Actors Natural and Character Studies 1938 50 - 1938 and Hollywood was booming. New cinemas were springing up everywhere, new colour photography was bringing greater realism to the silver screen and the public flocked to picture palaces in their droves. Film star cigarette card sets were the latest craze for collectors, and Ogdens joined the bonanza, but their set had a novel approach. Each card has two pictures, one of the star’s natural pose, the other showing him or her in character mode. Examples are W.C. Field (as Mr. Micawber), Boris Karloff (“The Mummy”), George Robey, Gracie Fields, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Mr Douglas Bying (cast as Queen Elizabeth!) and Florence Desmond on no. 9 playing Elizabeth Bergner who is pictured on no. 2. An absolutely brilliant set. This set was also issued by Hignetts. Size 68 x 36mm

Gallaher Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Portraits of Famous Stars 1935 Portraits of Famous Stars 1935 48 - Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn, Douglas Fairbanks, Marlene Dietrich and Gertrude Lawrence, famous stars indeed whose names are as familiar today as they were in 1935 when Gallahers pictured them in their series of 48 Portraits of Famous Stars. The cinema in the mid-1930s was at the peak of its popularity, with U.K. admissions exceeding fifty million a week. And one of the biggest box office successes was the film version of John Buchan's "The Thirty-Nine Steps" The two stars, Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll, both feature in this card series, reviving memories of their gripping adventure as fugitives, a classic portrayal that has never been equalled in the several remakes. Not all the stars in the set are instantly recognisable, and we must admit that we've never heard of Lorna Storm, Tomari Desni or Grete Natzler. Excellent colour portraits are backed by informative texts.

Phillips Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Screen Stars Series B 1936 Screen Stars Series B 1936 48 - Although cinema attendances have picked up since the opening of new multiplexes admissions are still only a fraction of those in 1936 when this series was issued. This was a time when the silver screen dominated leisure activity and a new breed of glamorous Hollywood superstars such as Myrna Loy, Bette Davis and Leslie Howard held audiences spell-bound. Little wonder then that film star series were the most common card issues of the period – so numerous, in fact, that the new issues editor in our magazine Cigarette Card News in August 1936, C.L. Porter, said “sick as I am of the subject…” when opening his review of this set. He went on to admit that the production of this series was “most attractive” – a little grudging perhaps considering the obvious amount of care that has gone into producing this set, particularly the portraits, to give such a pleasing variety of poses, true-to-life pictures, superb colouring, embossed edged oval portrait within a white background style and informative text. All are excellent and combine to make what in our view is possibly the best of all the film series. Series A with frame embossed or not embossed was also produced in the same format, but although some of the same stars appear in both the majority are different. These cards are size 68 x 35mm.

There is a wealth of information on the numbered card backs, for instance we are told that 5ft 5inch tall Katherine Hepburn began on the New York stage but was spotted by executives of RKO-Radio and immediately given a contract or that Clark Gable worked as a lumberjack before making it big in Hollywood. This set was also produced by Abdulla & Co. Limited around the same time. A lovely set for any movie lover with cards size 67 x 37mm.

Lloyd Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Cinema Stars Glossy Nd 28-54 (1934) Cinema Stars Glossy Nd 28-54 (1934) 27 - The 1930s have been called the golden age of cinema with good reason because this was the era when the talkies took to the silver screen and going to the pictures was the most popular form of mass entertainment. Naturally enough card issuers reflected this interest by producing many sets of film stars. Among them was Richard Lloyd & Sons who issued three series of glossy cards each comprising, rather strangely, twenty-seven subjects. This set is the second of these numbered 28 to 54 and issued around 1934. These are really well done with clear attractive photos backed by plenty of information about the star’s career and latest films and among those featured in this set are Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer (who appears on two cards with different pictures and text), Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Maurice Chevalier and Clark Gable. Nostalgia at its best for all film buffs. Cards size 68 x 36mm
