Prehistoric Animals 1972
Prehistoric Animals 1972 50 - These may have been given away free in packets of tea, but make no mistake, these are a serious educational tool. The illustrations were done by wildlife artist Maurice Wilson who not only illustrated loads of books, but also did the artwork for displays and books for the Natural History Museum in London. The comprehensive text on the back was written by Dr. Alan Charig an English palaeontologist who also worked for the Natural History Museum. He was not only an expert in his field, but is also credited with encouraging interest in the subject through his work on TV. The creatures include the well-known such as Brachiousaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, Iguanodon, Triceratops etc. as well as the more unusual such as Gerrothorax which gets its name from the Greek for ‘wickerwork breastplate’ a reference to the armour around its middle section or Australopithecus an ape-man with massive jaws but tiny brain. A worth set for any collection with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Prehistoric Animals 1st Series 1966
Prehistoric Animals 1st Series 1966 25 - This is an excellent colourful and educational series which as the title suggests looks at prehistoric animals. Included in this 1st Series are the Hyracotherium which looks somewhat like a pig, the Cynognathus which is described as a mammal-like reptile “akin in some aspects to the dog” although not looking like any pet we would want in the house, the Rhino-like Brontotherium, the 40-foot sea-living Macroplata, the Mesosaurus which was amphibious and frankly hideous looking, Rhamphorhynchus which was a Jurassic flying reptile, Alticamelus a forerunner of the camel and Dimorphodon an early flying reptile which was the first specimen discovered by legendary fossil hunter Mary Anning in 1828. This set was also issued by Cooper & Co Stores Limited in 1962 and a 2nd Series was also issued by both companies. This is a fascinating set with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Dinosaurs 1992
Dinosaurs 1992 EL90 - This educational sets contains excellent colour drawings of dinosaurs in their presumed natural habitat. As well as being collected the cards could also be used as part of a ‘Swap It Challenge’ so each creature is given an attacking and defensive score as well as a special feature score. For instance, the Tsintaosaurus has a defensive score of 22 and a special feature score of 35 due to a tall bony spike between its eyes, whilst the Iguanodon has a defensive score of 64 and a special feature score of 75 due to is grasping tongue. Other information on the back tells you how to pronounce the name, what they ate, where they lived and their weight, height and length. With 90 in the set all your favourites are bound to be included like the Diplodocus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus, but there are plenty of others worth a mention including the Compsognathus which was one of the smallest dinosaurs and the Anatosaurus which has an almost human posture, but a bill like a duck. The cards have different coloured borders and backs according to which category they belong to so the Triceratops has a blue border as this is a armoured plant-eater, whilst the Velociraptor has a yellow border as it is a two-legged meat eater. An ideal set for anyone interested in dinosaurs and size 156 x 65mm.
