World Cup Soccer All Stars 1978
Golden Wonder Football World Cup Soccer All Stars 1978 World Cup Soccer All Stars 1978 36 - World Cup fever gripped Scotland in 1978 when the national side qualified for the FIFA World Cup to be held in Argentina and Scottish manufacturers Golden Wonder cashed in on this by issuing cards in their packets of crisps featuring international stars due to appear in the tournament. An album was also available in which to house these cards. No doubt the success was even sweeter as England had failed to qualify and hopes were high for the Scottish side which had beaten Czechoslovakia and Wales to earn their place. Sadly the Scotland side did not make out of the group stage and the competition was later won by the host nation Argentina. Among the star players pictured in colour on these borderless cards are Brazil’s Zico, Roberto Bettega of Italy, French midfielder Michel Platini, Scotland captain Bruce Rioch, Peru striker Oswaldo Ramirez, Sweden’s Bjorn Nordqvist, Rudi Krol of Holland, Klaus Fischer of West Germany and Rene Houseman of Argentina. The card backs are full of information about the player and both his team and national team. The cards are size 68 x 36mm.

It pictures in colour some of the legends of the past such as Rodney Marsh of Manchester City, Notts. Forest’s Tony Woodcock who later played in Germany, Liverpool’s Tommy Smith, Bryan Robson who signed for Newcastle in 1962, Hull’s Stuart Pearson who played 15 times for England, Stoke and Ireland star Terry Conroy, Charlie George of Arsenal, footballing legend George Best pictured in Hibrnian kit, Norman Hunter of Leeds United and Sammy McIlroy of Manchester United who was Matt Busby’s last signing for the club.
