Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife African Wild Life blue back 1961 African Wild Life blue back 1961 50 - These cards are the work of internationally renowned wildlife painter C.F. Tunnicliffe who both illustrated the stunning pictures of animals from the African continent and wrote the descriptions on the reverse. He certainly knew his stuff as there are loads of interesting facts to learn like the fact that Nile Crocodiles cover their eggs with sand leaving them to be incubated by the sun, but dig them up when they are ready to hatch or did you know that Wart Hogs live in holes which they enter backwards so their formidable tusks face outwards. The animals pictured include a Lion, Gorilla, a delightful array of big cats including some like the Caracal and Genet which we had not heard of, s Banded Mongoose, Porcupine etc., but favourite drawings include the Jumping Hare in mid-flight with shadow underneath, Zebras and Sable Antelope at the watering hole, the tiny Klipspringer antelope leaping between rocks and a majestic male Elephant. This set was also re-issued with a black back in 1973. An album was also available to house this set. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Brooke Bond Animals & Wildlife Wild Life In Danger blue back 1963 Wild Life In Danger blue back 1963 50 - This set was issued with this company’s tea blends and also with their Crown Cup coffee and is a very fine series indeed. When this was reviewed in our magazine in 1963 it was described as “A provocative title and a provocative set which should do immense good in the battle for the preservation of wild life” and it is sad to think that many of these species continue to feature on the endangered list. For some, like the Sumatran Rhino, Aye-aye, Kakapo and Ivory-billed Woodpecker the situation has unfortunately got worse and all of these are now on the critical list in danger of completely dying out in the wild. The situation is not without hope however as some, such as the Arabian Oryx and Hawaiian Goose have been pulled back from the brink and both are now listed as vulnerable rather than endangered. The numbers of Blue Whale have also improved. As for the Californian Condo this went completely extinct in the wild in 1987 which is no surprise as the card tells us there were only 60-65 left in 1963. Happily this magnificent bird was reintroduced in some US states and whilst still endangered the population is now increasing. Let us hope for a brighter future for all these wonderful species. The comprehensive and interesting text on the reverse is in blue, but a black back re-issue set was also produced in 1973 and albums were originally available to house these. With excellent colour pictures of creatures, which frankly you are unlikely to see in the wild this is a set not to be missed. Cards size 68 x 36mm
