Wayside Flowers (Gray/green back) 1928
CWS Flowers and the Garden Wayside Flowers (Gray/green back) 1928 Wayside Flowers (Gray/green back) 1928 48 - Modern farming practices, the ever-encroaching urban sprawl and pollution of one kind or another have all had a dramatic effect on wildlife in general and wild flowers in particular since the 1920s when this set was produced. Ironically motorway banks and verges have become a major haven for many species whose former habitats have been under pressure, but it was hedgerows along country lanes which the Co-op had in mind when they issued this set of Wayside Flowers. These contain lovely colour paintings of plants in bloom, some also with a close-up inset of the flower or seed, and descriptions on the back which include quaint medicinal uses and adverts for “Anglian Mixture” and “Tyneal Plug” tobacco. Some, like Orache and Sneezewort may be unfamiliar, but then there’s buttercup, daisy, primrose and violet, plus our old friend dandelion whose name comes from the French “dent-de-lion” or “Lion’s tooth”, although we believe many of our Gallic neighbours still call it by its alternative name “pis-en-lit” which translates as “wet-the-bed”, a reference to the plant’s diuretic properties. The cards are size 67 x 36mm.

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Wayside Wildlife (Flowers, Animals etc) 1988 Britains Wayside Wildlife (Flowers, Animals etc) 1988 L30 - These were issued with Player’s ‘Grandee’ cigars and were prepared by Bruce Burton a naturalist and author who had been responsible for some of Player’s other wildlife issues. These use colour photographs from a variety of sources to show with superb clarity some of the rich variety of animals, birds, reptiles, insects and plants to be found in Britain’s hedgerows and wayside verges, an environment which has become increasingly important as a wildlife reserve. The excellent pictures (6 vertical and 24 horizontal, with some having two pictures showing different aspects such as a caterpillar and butterfly) have a white border and the numbered and titled backs are full of fascinating facts. Among our favourite pictures are the Stoat which is standing on its hind legs, the beautifully marked Kestral and a stunning close-up of a Thick-legged Flower Beetle on a yellow flower. A 16-page album was also originally issued to house this set with additionally information. A very impressive set with cards 89 x 50mm.
