Lea Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Famous Views 1936 Famous Views 1936 M48 - Between 1906 and 1938 the Manchester firm of R & J Lea issued several popular card series with their well-known cigarette brands Chairman, Recorder and Tournament. This particular series was issued in 1936 and titled “Famous Views” and was issued with Tournament Cigarettes. These contain splendid real black and white photos with interesting facts on the back, but the title is perhaps misleading as the first six cards are devoted to the funeral of H.M. King George V, including the last journey from King’s Cross, the lying in-state in Westminster Hall, the procession and service in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor where King Edward VIII sprinkled earth from Frogmore on his father’s coffin. The next seventeen cards are sights of London such as Piccadilly Circus and the Mansion House, followed by views, mostly of famous buildings, around Britain finishing with three of Manchester Lea’s home city including the Royal Exchange. So the title is somewhat misleading as to the contents and we suspect the company may have substituted some of the original subjects at the last minute in order to cover the royal event swiftly within a series virtually ready for release when the King died in January. Whether this is indeed the case we shall never know, but this is an unusual and highly informative set which was also issued in a standard size in both glossy and matt finishes. These cards are size 76 x 51mm. This was also issued in a standard size (68 x 36mm).

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Views of London 1929 Views of London 1929 27 - Pretty well every major landmark is included, from Marble Arch in the west to Tower Bridge in the east. More than eighty years after these cards came out you could still use them to organise your own tour of the capital and the texts will tell you all you need to know about the sights. Particularly fascinating, though, is the amount of detail revealed in the stunningly clear pictures – you might even be able to make out, with the aid of a magnifier, the numbers on open-top buses or read the advertisements on buildings – and then there are the horse-drawn cabs, a delivery boy cycling past the Horse Guards and a throng of citizens going about their business. Fascinating stuff! Size 68 x 36mm
