Epol (South Africa) Dogs and Pets Dogs 1974 Dogs 1974 M30 - At the time these were issued Epol were the largest manufacturers of animal food in South Africa and were associated with Associated British Foods in the UK. These cards were packed in one of their smaller retail and supermarket packs and for ten cents the collector could order an album to hold them. The cards are very fine and when the set was reviewed in our magazine 1974 we reported that Epol had said that “the photographing was a major exercise. They are all champion dogs and between them have won many prizes throughout South Africa. They were all photographed on the same day in a studio in Cape Town and had to be taken in and out of the studio with military precision to avoid what could have been some ugly scenes! You will notice that there is no shadow or demarcation of the floor on which the dog is standing, or a wall. This is because a technique was used where the dogs stood on a different coloured curtain..” The black bordered cards contain the breed at the top in English and Afrikaans and the bilingual numbered backs give information on the breed. The pictures are the real star though and their photograph technique really helps the dogs stand out. Among the breeds featured are the Irish Wolfhound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Labrador Retriever, Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Welsh Corgi, Dalmatian, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Pug and a Basset Hound with very expressive eyes. Lovely cards size 79 x 54mm.
