This time we go right back to 1962 when Ali was still known as Cassius Clay and in his 15th professional fight he met Argentinian Alejandro Lavorante at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. At that stage Ali was still the underdog although he had an unbeaten record and many were surprised at the short work he made of defeating Laorante. Ali had predicted he would down Lavorante in round five and that is just what he did. Of course as we all know this was just the start of a long and impressive career for the young Clay/Ali. Sporting Profiles Boxing The Greatest Muhammad Ali Wild Card Ali v Marciano Computer Bout 1997 The Greatest Muhammad Ali Wild Card Ali v Marciano Computer Bout 1997 L1 - This card is a supplement to the Muhammad Ali A Career History set issued in 1993. The card is based on a fictious bout between Ali and the retired Rocky Marciano. Basically data on their styles, previous fights etc. was fed into a computer then the men were filmed in various situations and with different endings. The film was then edited and the ending chosen based on the computer’s prediction before being shown on TV in the 1970s. According to the computer Marciano would have taken a beating, but would knock Ali out in the 13th round. When the film was show in this country on the BBC many viewers complained of racisim and the next week they showed a different version with Ali triumphing. This card shows a mock-up of a fight poster for the two and the informative text on the back tells you all about the greatest fight to never happen. Size 80 x 61mm.

Sporting Profiles Boxing The Greatest Muhammad Ali 1993 The Greatest Muhammad Ali 1993 L50 - This set celebrates the achievements of the legendary boxer who was born Cassius Marcellus Clay in January 1942, but changed his name in 1964 after converting to Islam. The colour pictures are taken from fight posters and programmes whilst the backs are full of information about his career and life. Included is the programme for the 1960 Olympics in Rome where he became Olympic light-heavyweight champion. Immediately after this success Ali turned professional and the rest, as they say, is history. Supremely talented and famed for his outrageous self-promotion he won 56 of his fights, but is most famous for the so called “Thriller in Manilla” against Joe Frazier which he won but only after 14 rounds. This is a comprehensive set which takes us on a journey from Rome all the way to his last fight in 1981. What a boxer, what a set! Cards size 78 x 60mm.
