Silver Screen Actors 1930s (2012)
J.F.Sporting Collectibles Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Silver Screen Actors 1930s (2012) Silver Screen Actors 1930s (2012) LT24 - Recalling Hollywood’s ‘golden age’, these fine hand-coloured head and shoulders photos feature some of the all-time cinema greats including Errol Flynn, Spencer Tracy, James Cagney, Gary Cooper, Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. The backs give biographical details and film successes. The Clark Gable card incorrectly states “Gone With The Wind” (1933)”. One of J.F’s earlier series (Famous Film Stars 1940/50s 2nd Series) rightly says the Civil War epic came out in 1939 – and indeed it played in London throughout the war. Size 90 x 64mm.

Ogdens Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Actors Natural and Character Studies 1938 Actors Natural and Character Studies 1938 50 - 1938 and Hollywood was booming. New cinemas were springing up everywhere, new colour photography was bringing greater realism to the silver screen and the public flocked to picture palaces in their droves. Film star cigarette card sets were the latest craze for collectors, and Ogdens joined the bonanza, but their set had a novel approach. Each card has two pictures, one of the star’s natural pose, the other showing him or her in character mode. Examples are W.C. Field (as Mr. Micawber), Boris Karloff (“The Mummy”), George Robey, Gracie Fields, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Mr Douglas Bying (cast as Queen Elizabeth!) and Florence Desmond on no. 9 playing Elizabeth Bergner who is pictured on no. 2. An absolutely brilliant set. This set was also issued by Hignetts. Size 68 x 36mm
