Sectional Series Clifton Suspension Bridge 1938
Anstie Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Sectional Series Clifton Suspension Bridge 1938 Sectional Series Clifton Suspension Bridge 1938 10 - This is a lovely sectional series of colour drawings that form one large picture of the beautiful Clifton Suspension Bridge which spans the River Avon in Bristol. This bridge was based on original designs by master engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (as amended by William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw) and was opened in 1864. The iconic structure links Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in Somerset and contains a toll bridge which raises money for its maintenance. The bridge is 245 feet above high-water level and is used by 4 million vehicles a year. The backs give details about the bridge and we are told that “when the picture has been completely formed the sections being gummed at back may be easily mounted or fixed on a piece of stiff paper or cardboard” – not something we would recommend now! The card backs also have the trade mark of E & W Anstie Litd who’s tobacco factory in Devizes we are told has been ‘established over 200 years’. A nice set with cards size 67 x 36mm.

Anstie Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Sectional Series Stonehenge 1936 Sectional Series Stonehenge 1936 10 - This contains 10 sectional pieces which when put together make up a larger colour picture of the iconic monument Stonehenge. The backs tell us that this monument is one of the most ancient and famous in the British Isles, is situated on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire and is of great interest to Archaeologists and sightseers. They go on to say that “When the picture has been completely formed, the sections being gummed at back, may be easily mounted or fixed on a piece of stiff paper or cardboard” – don’t try this at home as it ruins their value! The unnumbered backs also give the trademark for the company’s factory in Devizes and stated that this was “Established over 200 Years”. A charming set with cards size 67 x 36mm.
