Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Worlds Masterpieces inscribed 2nd Series 1915 Worlds Masterpieces inscribed 2nd Series 1915 25 - There are not many pre-Great War sets as modestly priced as this little series of twenty-five photogravures. Although titled ‘Second Series’ there was no first series issued and it is thought to have been a continuation of their Famous Pictures series issued in 1913. The pictures begin with portraits of the King and Queen and then continues with classic paintings from galleries around the world with the emphasis on 19th century artists. These include ‘Sea Scouts of the Empire by marine artist Bernard Gribble, ‘The Judgement of Paris’ by Rubens, Raphael’s ‘The Sistine Manonna’, ‘The Knight Errant’ by Sir John Everett Millias, Edward Burne-Jones’ ‘King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid, Lord Frederick Leighton’s ‘Bath of Psyche’, ‘Charles I’ by Peter Lely, Constable’s ‘The Valley Farm’, Gainsborough’s ‘The Market Cart’, Turner’s ‘Crossing the Brook’, ‘A Cavalier’ by J.L.E. Meissonier, ‘The Horse Feeder’ by George Morland and ‘The Music Lesson’ by E. Muenier. The backs bear intelligent texts with alternate cards advertising ‘Badminton’ or ‘Spinet’ tobaccos. An interesting set with cards size 69 x 41mm
