Poster Pointers 1925
Macfisheries Miscellaneous Trade Cards Poster Pointers 1925 Poster Pointers 1925 L12 - This is a very unusual set featuring what they call ‘Poster Pointers’ featuring pictures by various artists all with a vague fish or sea connection. Six of these are by C. Lovat Fraser who is described on one of the backs as “one of the most gifted young artists of this century”. He was also responsible for designing scenery and dresses for ‘The Beggar’s Opera’ at the Lyric Theatre. His drawings are bold and colourful and include a fisherman, lobster and a quay. Other artists include Miss M. McLeish, Miss D.M. Batty and Miss Irene Fawkes who we believe both later designed posters for London Transport. There is a lot of text on the card backs which tells you a lot about the fishing industry and the Mac Fisheries company. For instance the card of a Fisherman tells us that fishermen are very superstitious and in Buckie crew on their way out of harbour must not speak or that the Mac Fisheries oyster beds are at Helford in Cornwall. The last card concerns the cooking of fish and says “from time to time the company offer cooking recipes”. Cards size 81 x 62mm.
